Paintings Arrived in Hawaii Today

I've just been informed that my five paintings have arrived and are being hung at Sweeney Art and Design on the Big Island of Hawaii today. Patrick is hanging them as I am writing this so they will be up for the Hiroshi Yamano show this weekend. The gallery's Grande Opening is March 24th and I'll be posting more information as it comes in. It's my paintings first venture off the US interior mainland and we're all pretty excited about it.

texture: the characteristic visual and tactile quality of the surface
of artwork resulting from the way in which the materials are used

jodi: artist: a manual laborer, a creator of beautiful object.
jodi’s objective has always been to create unlimited lengths and heights of textured imagery. “I see and feel texture in everything I touch with eyes and hands.”

Donna McCullough: Crafted of steel and embellished with flourishes of wire mesh, screening, cutouts and bits of found objects, the dresses are at once both elegant and imposing. “I like the duplicitous nature of steel which can be manipulated to appear feminine and soft while actually maintaining its strength and rigidity – an expression in contrasts and complements.”

Grand Opening of the Honfleur Gallery

frm the DCist...

Celebrate the grand opening of the Honfleur Gallery this Saturday at 7 p.m. This very welcome addition to the city's art scene is located near the Anacostia metro and appropriately begins its life with East of the River, a mixed media exhibition that includes both professionals and first-timers who celebrate their history with the area. Especially notable is the work by John Muller from DreamCity, an organization that does some serious community building in D.C. — so much they've earned a nomination for the Mayor's Art Award, which will be handed out next month at the Kennedy Center. Muller presents a photographic storyboard of DreamCity's upcoming play Southside, "a call for non-violence within the communities and neighborhoods of not only Washington, D.C., but throughout the country." While we love art for its own sake, we love D.C. even more and are excited to see a gallery focused so closely on its community and the people living in its own backyard.

S T E L L A M A R I S - AN AGITPROP INSTALLATION by J.W. MAHONEY

Stella Maris: J.W. Mahoney presents an agitprop installation of works on paper and cloth that meditates upon the subject of the feminine through a dynamic combination of mysterious digitized imagery, poetic texts, and turn-of-the century Viennese, old Russian and Japanese design principles. Mahoney's approach to content is distinctive -- and always immediately recognizable by his cognoscenti -- as he coaxes dense emotional questions out of loaded images and ideas.

GRAHAM CALDWELL at G Fine Art

G Fine Art
is pleased to present the work of

GRAHAM CALDWELL
in the show
Anatomies

February 17 – March 31, 2007
Opening reception, Saturday, February 17th 6:30 – 8:30pm

Caldwell’s new work continues to transcend the utilitarian nature of glass. He embraces the material, with all of its manufactured connotations and spins it to become something unique. Light bulbs that have bent and grown huge, punching bags mirrored and frozen in action, thin blue glass in the form of a tree branch or a piece of coral.

This show feels like an adventure; a journey, maybe through the natural history hall, encountering creatures in dioramas from different worlds. They appear strangely out of their element, but allude to danger or elegance, their teeth and claws remaining sharp, their bodies still implying movement. Caldwell’s work is sly, attractive, and simultaneously sinister. He continues with these pieces to straddle the lines between humor and potential disaster, linearity and sensual form, intricacy and forthrightness.

In one work, thin tubes of amber glass extend from the wall and enter back in, creating a downward arch. In a row they look like handles to grab, or ribs delicately poised in the air. Another piece resembles bubbles being blown into the world, extending and hovering out from the wall. Mirror-like, the surface provides a sort of fun-house reflection. Multiple pieces extend in different directions, capturing a movement like they have just been punched or touched, like an anemone’s fingers swaying in the currents. Blithely this work seems like technology mimicking nature, a kind of gross enlargement.

Caldwell, like a scientist, investigates the intricacy of his material, its display and the natural world. It’s as if he is holding up a prism that might reflect a rainbow–but instead, reflects excitement, fear and beauty. The anatomies he refers to are ribs, teeth, anemones, forests, fungi, fingers, and bodies. Anatomy is the study of structure, its dissection, analysis and minute examination. Caldwell is immersed in this study–exploring the anatomy of the viewer, the anatomy of glass, and the anatomy of natural things.

5+5, five artists choose five artists to watch

Ann Loeb Bronfman Gallery

5+5
five artists choose five artists to watch
February 15-May 13, 2007

To celebrate its 10th anniversary as well as the Washington DCJCC's ongoing commitment to Washington's artistic and cultural community the Ann Loeb Bronfman Gallery has organized an exhibition of ten artists, 5 + 5.

Five nationally recognized artists whose careers were established in Washington, DC, and most of whom currently reside here, were selected to participate in the exhibition, and each of them, in turn, was asked to select a DC artist whose work they esteem, to be included in the show. To further connect this exhibit to the artistic culture in Washington, DC, the Ann Loeb Bronfman has tapped Phyllis Rosenzweig to curate the exhibit. Phyllis, recently retired from the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, worked there as their Curator of Works on Paper. The exhibition showcases work in all mediums and ranging in date from the 1970s to 2007. At least one project will be conceived for the occasion and specifically for the Ann Loeb Bronfman Gallery space and will be completed just shortly before the exhibition opens to the public.

The exhibition avoids a predictable selection of artists while being respectful of some of the important older figures associated with the city, and at the same time celebrating the new or ongoing promise of the art community here. The first five artists (the ones who selected the next five) represent a range of ages and relative status as do the artists they in turn have selected. Thus, some exciting younger artists who have just begun to establish national reputations will have their work seen for the first time juxtaposed with work by older or more established artists with whom they have not necessarily been associated. Some of the artists and their work will be unfamiliar and relationships between the work of the first five artists and the five that they have selected will be provocative and, in many cases, unexpected.

The exhibition is not thematic and does not attempt to define a "Washington aesthetic." Instead, it will provide a lively and visually stimulating mirror that will reflect, if only in part, the rich and complex nature of the flourishing creative community that is supported by Washington, DC.

Included in the exhibition are influential figures, well-known artists, and great teachers including Sam Gilliam, John Gossage, Martin Puryear, and Renee Stout; emerging bright lights such as Y. David Chung, Jae Ko, and Dan Steinhilber, and relative unknowns Otho Branson, Pia Calderon, and Mary Early.

More Washington, DC Artists in New York City Art Fair

G Fine Art
at
PULSE NEW YORK
with
Maggie Michael

February 22 – 25, 2007

G Fine Art will participate in the Pulse Art Fair, featuring new work by Maggie Michael. Michael's paintings and drawings are fluid, suspended worlds that pull together and apart with enticing visual energy. In one series, she layers and manipulates visceral representations of destruction, change, and renewal. Another series is iconic, both straightforward and suggestive of the corporeal and spiritual.

This duality in Michael's work connects to the back and forth of communication, the outward and inward, to relationships and the individual, living and dying, wet and dry, chaos and calm. In her paintings, Michael treats the paint skins sculpturally with pinches, puckers, gouges, cuts, stitches, rolls, and folds. Drawing is integrated into the paintings using spray paint, ink, and charcoal. Michael regards painting and drawing as physical and psychological, a place that engages control and entanglement.

At the fair, G Fine Art will have a flat file of new work by iona rozeal brown, Graham Caldwell, Linn Meyers, Barbara Probst, Lisa Marie Thalhammer and Ian Whitmore.

ArtatAxis, the District’s Newest Art Space

Charles Krause / Reporting Fine Art
_________presents____________
“LENSES”
New Work by Chilean Artist Joan Belmar
To Inaugurate ArtatAxis Feb. 11
Feb 11 - March 11. 2007
Cronica. 2006. 14” x 14” x 4”

Come take a look: Sunday, February 11th, 5 to 8 p.m.
ArtatAxis, 1509 Connecticut Ave. NW

Charles Krause: Reporting Fine Art is proud to present the lyrical Mylar constructions of Chilean born, Washington based artist Joan Belmar.Belmar’s translucent sculptures are in the tradition of the abstract wooden boxes created 50 years ago by Louise Nevelson, yet completely fresh and original in their use of color and materials to achieve an almost shimmering effect. Although Belmar’s new work is still relatively unknown in Washington, he was recently nominated by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities as finalist for its prestigious outstanding emerging artist of the year award, to be presented by Mayor Adrian Fenty on March 19th at the Kennedy Center.

One of Belmar’s drawings is included in the District of Columbia’s new permanent collection in the Wilson Building and one of his new constructions has been selected to be auctioned at the Feb. 10th Corcoran/WPA Gala. For “Lenses,” his upcoming exhibit on Connecticut Avenue, Belmar will for the first time play with light to give his work an even more brilliantly translucent quality. Axis, long known for creative installations in its prominent Dupont Circle windows, will be the host location for Joan Belmar's exhibit. A rare example of imaginative and thought provoking Washington window display, the Washington Post has likened the salon's Connecticut Avenue windows to those of Barneys New York. Increasingly artists have had their talents displayed in the tall bay windows of the salon and Axis is pleased to provide exposure for emerging artists. "Lenses" marks the first time Axis has hosted an exhibition.

Belmar’s work will inaugurate ArtatAxis, the District’s newest art space, located in the Axis Salon at 1509 Connecticut Avenue NW. ArtatAxis, which intends to host a series of exhibitions this year featuring emerging artists from the Washington area, is a not-for- profit collaboration with Charles Krause, a long time collector and former foreign correspondent for The Washington Post, CBS News and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. All proceeds from the sale of art work will remain with the artist whose work is displayed in these series of exhibitions.

Travis Price, AIA, Lecture at National Building Museum

Lecture: The Archaeology of Tomorrow: Architecture and the Spirit of Place
Monday, February 5, 6:30 – 8:00pm

In his three decades as an architect, author, educator, and philosopher, Travis Price, AIA, has developed an architecture informed by ecology and mythology that restores spirit of place to modern design. His projects worldwide — including the world’s largest solar-powered building (the Tennessee Valley Authority’s one-million-square-foot complex) — and his design/build expeditions that include a floating house on the Amazon and a star-gazing temple at Machu Picchu, suggest alternatives to homogenization in the American landscape and around the globe. After the lecture, he will sign copies of his book The Archaeology of Tomorrow: Architecture and the Spirit of Place).

This lecture is held in conjunction with The Green House, which will be open for viewing. $12 Members and students; $20 nonmembers; pre-paid registration required; walk-in registration based on availability
