PROTEST CENSORSHIP AT THE SMITHSONIAN

Tell the Board of Regents - Clough must go!

Monday, January 31, 1:00pm
Meet outside the Smithsonian Metro station, at the Mall entrance
. From there, we'll head to The Castle, Smithsonian Headquarters.

Last November, Smithsonian Institution head G. Wayne Clough touched off a firestorm of controversy when he quickly capitulated to the complaints of right-wing politicians and an anti-gay religious group and removed a video work by seminal gay artist David Wojnarowicz from the ground-breaking National Portrait Gallery show Hide/Seek.

His shocking and unconscionable decision to censor this exhibition triggered widespread condemnation - a New York Times editorial called it "an appalling act of political cowardice" and protesters marched in Washington, New York, and Los Angeles. Today, Clough still refuses to put the video back in the show, and has publicly defended his censorship, saying he would do it again "only handle it better."

When the Smithsonian's Board of Regents meets Monday, Jan. 31 in Washington they will be confronting this controversy and Clough's action for the first time. They have the power to restore the video and fire Clough.  We want to be there to let them know that this decision was wrong and it will not stand.  Clough's actions are a clear threat to this country's largest cultural institution, the Smithsonian.

Zenith Community Arts Foundation (ZCAF), which manages and tours The Freedom Place Collection of seminal works by African-American artists Romare Bearden, Benny Andrews, Alma Thomas, Richard Yarde and Robert Freeman, announced today that the exhibition will be on view at Mercer Gallery at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY, February 2–February 27, commemorating Black History Month. Robert Freeman, one of two living artists featured in the collection, will conduct a Gallery Talk on Wednesday, February 2 at 4pm, followed by a reception from 7–9pm.

In making the announcement, Margery E. Goldberg, a Rochester native and ZCAF’s executive director said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for Rochester residents and students to experience these rarely seen works, painted during a time when African-American artists were overlooked in the mostly white art world. The five artists in the collection followed their vision, and paved the way for generations to follow.”

Although linked by the African-America experience and heritage that inspired their work, the Freedom Place Collection artists speak with their own styles in their drawings, collages, lithographs, oils, acrylics and watercolors. Their subjects and messages range from abstract to figurative and rural to urban. Scenes of cotton fields, paintings of jazz musicians and partygoers and geometric forms share the walls in this exhibition.

Showing of Robert Freeman’s “Love Letter” Paintings, One Night OnlyIn conjunction with The Freedom Collection exhibition, the Zenith Community Arts will also showcase paintings from Robert Freeman’s Love Letter series on Thursday, February 3, at a reception at Brio Grill, hosted by Sami Mina, from 6-8pm, at 3400 Monroe Avenue, Pittsford Colony Plaza in Rochester. The paintings are for sale, and represent Freeman’s more recent works.

DICKSON CARROLL / NEW WORK

DICKSON CARROLL
NEW WORK

January 29 - March 5, 2011

Opening Reception
Saturday, January 29, 5 - 7 pm
Intersection, 2010, painted wood sculpture, 66 x 38 x 6 inches

There is no one who makes more distinctive three dimensional forms than Dickson Carroll. This new exhibition, which celebrates form, color and function in all the overlapping complexity of carved and manipulated wood and in the readily identifiable palette which is solely Carroll's, is as pleasing to look at as it is accomplished in its execution.

This exhibit, featuring a series of abstract wall pieces, incorporating mirrors, brings together the architect and artist, the craftsman and dreamer. These bright fantasies are concrete, engaging and provide food for thought. Carroll, in whichever scale he works, provides us, the viewers, with a Through the Looking Glass glimpse at the possibilities of his world.

Coup d'Espace: Fort Distraction

Coup d'Espace: Fort Distraction
Mariah Johnson
January 17 – February 11
First Friday Reception: February 4, 6-8pm
For the project Fort Distraction, artist Mariah Johnson will transform the WPA office space by slowly folding, arranging, stacking and layering bed sheets around the architectural features and furniture in the space. Part performance, part site-specific installation, Fort Distraction invites viewers to witness Johnson’s process and the work behind her beautifully arranged installations. Throughout the project’s four-week run, Johnson will add to the installation on a daily basis. The public is welcome to stop by during the installation process to view the installation’s progress and watch Johnson at work. After weeks of adding, rearranging and layering, Johnson’s installation will engulf the audience, transforming the WPA office space into a kind of artist’s pillow fort. A First Friday reception in honor of Fort Distraction will be held on Friday, February 4, 2011.

"Color and Shape" at City Gallery DC

"Color and Shape" showcases Nancy Donnelly’s elegant glass art and Jill Finsen’s whimsically primitive paintings executed in oil paint.

Openmg Saturday: February 5, 2011 from 6-9pm
Closing party: February 26 from 3- 5pm.

Fascination with texture as a component of color and shape is apparent in the work of both these artists. Allusive of the natural world, they are direct and accessible. Yet surface abstraction is paramount to the success of these art pieces—the texture of the glass complements layered textures in the paintings. These works complement each other and pull the exhibit in new and exciting visual directions. Both artists find negative space crucial to this effect, moments of rest that energize each work and in this sense make each more complete. Donnelly and Finsen’s works provide tension between familiarity and abstraction and at the same time question placement within imagined space.

Old Metal and Recycled Dishes Team Up With Glass

February 6, 2011 from 3-5PM
The River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation (RRUUC)
6301 River Road in Bethesda, MD.
Pettit creates a new aesthetic out of commonplace, disparate parts with evident influence from the abstract expressionists, Klimt and Modigliani. Intricate mosaic combined with asymmetrical forms defines her style. The three-dimensional nature of her work means dramatic changes come as the light shifts, shadows emerge and mirror creates shifting shapes. The art expresses emotion in unexpected ways. www.janepettit.com

Anne Marchand Embraces the Element of Surprise

Abstraction has been the consistent thread in Marchand’s work. Within the last five years, she has focused on abstract painting and exploring the physical, mental and emotional connection between people and their surrounding environment. Her interest in mystical poetry has inspired her to create art that questions man’s place in the universe.

Art Peek-Show Pops Up on U Street Corridor

The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery announces the launch of its 2011 window-installation series, IN-FLUX window peek-show. Kicking off the IN-FLUX series this year, John M. Adams presents his site-specific drawing, Efflux.

Adams' work straddles the domains of performance and installation art; his drawings are designed and created specific for their space, and immediately destroyed at the close of the exhibition. The feathery line-quality of his graphite drawings evoke plumes of smoke, equally transitory and in keeping with the larger work's momentary existence.

Alongside the installation's gestural work, a TV monitor loops footage of Adams creating the piece itself. Then, on Monday, February 14th at 6pm Adams will destroy the piece on site. Thus, together Efflux's components offer a metaphor for evolution - moving the viewer through creation, existence, and eventually destruction.

Don't miss your chance to see his elegant and fleeting work transform the gallery space, now on display thru February 13th, with a final performance of the work's destruction on Monday, February 14th at 6pm.

Woven with Her Brush
Paintings by Zohra Ben Hamida
At the Jerusalem Fund Gallery

January 21—March 4, 2011
Reception to meet the artist Friday, January 21, 6-8 p.m.
Artist Zohra Ben Hamida says of herself “I am an Arab and Berber by ancestry, Tunisian by birth, Mediterranean and African by a lucky chance, American by destiny, and who I am today by choice.”

In her paintings at The Jerusalem Fund Gallery, color is the theme. The blazing sun straddling the cool shades over the desert in Saudi Arabia, memories of the bright garments adorned with gold and silver fibulae my Berber grandmother always wore with such pride; colors encountered every day, the colors of the bougainvillea and jasmine, indiscriminately lending their beauty and fragrance to modest and luxurious houses alike; a bigger than life icon inhabiting a Roman church for hundreds of years, still calling attention to itself with its dazzling gold-leaf garment, ,bright colors, sprinkled everywhere you look, reminding us that beauty exists around and within us, reminding us that beauty will always prevail.”

Ernesto Santalla - Symmetries @ Long View Gallery

Ernesto Santalla - Symmetries
January 20 - February 13, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 20, 6:30-8:30
Please RSVP to info[at]longviewgallery.com by Monday, January 17th.

EErnesto Santalla's photographs from his collage series uniquely document Washington's record-breaking snows of 2010. With camera in hand, he trudged through the inhibited landscape and captured monotonous images from the storm. His shots were not wholly unlike the thousands of photographs many amateurs captured on their camera phones, but, according to Santalla, his otherwise "uneventful, uninspired and often mundane images evolve into fascinating kaleidoscopic photographs." Santalla's process of repeating and mirroring images results in a view of our city, under the blanket of a blizzard, unlike anything you've seen before. The images that emerge from the process are images that speak to the viewer on an individual level, from the prurient to the metaphysical, similar to inkblots

Viewing Rm./ artworks of special interest @ Hemphill

Viewing Rm.
January 15 - March 26, 2011

Washington DC – Hemphill opens Viewing Rm. on Saturday, January 15, 2011, with a public reception from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through March 26, 2011.

Robert Rauschenberg, Front Roll, 1964, ed. 39, lithograph, 41” x 29”

Hemphill’s exhibitions typically focus on works by artists and artist estates that the gallery represents, punctuated by occasional thematic exhibitions addressing political or social issues. Often not seen by visitors are the artworks moving through the back rooms of the gallery. In 2004 a relocation to our current 14th Street address allowed us to design office and private viewing spaces for the display of artworks of special interest to individual collectors, pieces representing rare acquisition opportunities, and works that we–the staff–find to be uniquely powerful. From time to time someone wanders into our private spaces and becomes transfixed by what he or she otherwise would not see. Viewing Rm. aims to share the back room experience with a larger audience by bringing a selection of those artworks out into the exhibition spaces of the gallery.

Viewing Rm. includes paintings, mixed media, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and video installation. Works by Eugène Atget, Christopher Brooks, Margaret Burroughs, Colby Caldwell, William Christenberry, Steven Cushner, Don Donaghy, Thomas Downing, John Dreyfuss, Godfrey Frankel, Paul Fusco, Sam Gilliam, Alfred Jensen, Jacob Kainen, William Klein, Sally Mann, Tanya Marcuse, Mingering Mike, Joseph Mills, Portia Munson, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Richenburg, Robin Rose, Tom Sachs, August Sander, Sharon Sanderson, Alma Thomas, John Watson, and William Willis.

Lecture: Dr. Jonathan Katz / Hide/Seek @ Foundry Gallery

Lecture: January 15, 2011, 4PM
Dr. Jonathan Katz

Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture
FOUNDRY GALLERY 1314 18th Street, NW, 1st Floor, Washington, DC 20036

Dr. Jonathan Katz, director of the doctoral program in Visual Studies at the State University of New York Buffalo, and co curator of the “Hide/Seek” Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, will be delivering a lecture at the Foundry Gallery on Saturday January 15, 2011, beginning at 4:00pm. “Hide/Seek” shows works by American portrait artists that deal with sexual non-conformity. Topics include: how artists show their subject’s sexuality affects a portrait as well as how the presentation in art has changed over the last hundred years, as well as how sometimes the people in the portraits, and sometimes the artists themselves, have been forced into creative ways of expressing their identity, in the face of a society that would otherwise exclude them.

The “Hide/Seek” exhibit has received a good deal of notoriety due to the National Portrait Gallery’s decision to pull one of the works of art from the exhibition under pressure.

Attendance at Dr. Katz’ lecture is free, although donations are appreciated, is open to the public but on a first come first serve basis. For information please call 202-463-0203.

Richard Siegman @ The District of Columbia Arts Center (DCAC)

ReSolve New Works by Richard Siegman
Curated by Joanne Kent and Stuart Greenwell

Jan. 14 - Feb. 6, 2011
Opening: Friday, January 14, 7-9pm

ReSolve is abstractionist Richard Siegman's re-examination of a 30-year painting process that finds him creating his most realized, and freshest work to date. By balancing his signature expressionist gestures against a contra-indicated slick, hard-edged ground, the result is a controlled dynamism of infinite proportion.
An artist faces a blank slate when beginning a new work. Regardless of the artist’s experience, creating even a single piece requires the same investigation of self in relation to materials and pictorial elements, and solving or re-solving those challenges. This process reinvents and keeps the work fresh and relevant to the present. Richard Siegman is a committed abstractionist. His most recent body of work is a continuation of the style developed in his signature large-scale acrylic abstractions on resin board. The palette for those paintings with vigorously applied thick strokes was mostly primary colors and black on a white background. These new paintings include more secondary and tertiary colors, and surfaces are as often hard slick gloss as thick impasto. These works are more thoughtful and controlled, and weave together a complex whole made up of disparate elements. Parts consist of shapes, including inverted pyramids or bands, either vertical or horizontal and often at right angles to each other, that interact with areas of thick paint or gloss enamel. The expressionistic strokes of color, rather than dominating the overall surface, are contained within the bands or other hard-edged shapes. These new paintings merge his earlier physical and intuitive spontaneity with a thought out and considered process, and result in a dynamic interplay of parts and surface. Joanne Ken

CITY Gallery Presents
Ronnie Spiewak "Leaves, Words & Screens"
Opening Sat. Jan 8, 6-9pm
In Spiewak’s words: “Collage has always been a satisfying vehicle for expressing my ideas and emotions. Scissors and exacto blades are among my most coveted tools, serving in effect, as my paintbrushes. They help create lines and shapes quickly and crisply giving the work the energy I seek.  I am most comfortable when I’m tearing, cutting and pasting paper onto paper. Paper also has a 3-dimensional quality that I’m constantly exploring. Glossy black  ink-saturated magazine paper sings. The color, plainness and usefulness of brown paper give it an earthy quality.

John M. Adams / Finding Zero
January 6 through February 27, 2011
Opening Reception / Sunday, January 9, 4:00 to 6:00 pm (free)

John M. Adams' work activates the perceptual connection between artist, object (or environment), and viewer. The paintings reflect a meditative process of repetitive mark making through the transparent layers of subtle atmospheric and textured surfaces. These chaotic marks are juxtaposed with the structure of a regulated rhythm of horizontal lines.  The combination resonates with a quiet vibration that propels the viewer into an image whose color scheme and composition remain ambiguously familiar, as if from an incomplete memory that is nonetheless vivid.

The Shape of Things to Come: A Creative Collaboration

The Shape of Things to Come: A Creative Collaboration, an art exhibition featuring artists Sharon Keyser- Jackson, Cynthia Farrell Johnson, Desiree Sterbini, Sherry Burton Ways, Lezetta Moyer, Betty Farrell opening January 5, 2011 at the Sandy Spring Museum in Sandy Spring, MD.

Opening Reception: Sunday, January 9, 2011 from 2PM to 4PM.

It all started when Cynthia Farrell Johnson, a painter, met Sharon Keyser Jackson, a fiber artist. Each admired the work of the other. They mused about the possibility of doing a joint project some day. A little over a year after that initial conversation, they hit upon an idea. Johnson would create four designs and Sharon would interpret them as tapestries. Johnson invited longtime friend and an extraordinary quilter, Lezetta Moyer, Johnson to join the group. The next artist drawn into the project was Johnson's sister, Betty Farrell, an accomplished knitter who has collaborated with her sister in the past. When Desiree Sterbini, who does exquisite oil pastels, heard about the project, she wanted to join. Wanting to find a way to bring a three-dimensional artist into the mix, and remembering a doll exhibition they had seen at Sandy Spring Museum, the group invited, noted one of a kind doll artist extraordinaire,  Sherry Burton Ways to join. Altogether their work celebrates the many ways that artists express themselves. The titles from each of Johnson's original paintings form the common thread.

(Washington, DC) – Join Authentic Contemporary Art  for the digital photographic exhibit Urban Landscapes: From DC to Denmark by Photographer Kimberly Gaines, December 1, 2010 through January 22, 2011 at the Tubman-Mahan Art Gallery in The Center for Green Urbanism, DC’s newest art-infused green business incubator. Through digital photography, Urban Landscapes: From DC to Denmark exhibition showcases re-gentrified urban neighborhoods in both the District of Columbia and Denmark and the effects of these changes on vulnerable populations residing in these communities. . “Solar panels, green space, bicycles and assimilation; brick, construction, power and gentrification, those are the words that I equate with Denmark and DC,” said exhibit photographer, Kimberly Gaines.  “When gentrified neighborhoods and marginalized people have been camouflaged with new store fronts and street signs in DC living, the battlefield has a glossier appearance. This exhibition is about the surfaces."
