Washington Realism gathers representational paintings by local and regional artists who paint “what the eye can see." Leslie Nolan / Outliers exhibition

March 28 – April 27, 2012

Leslie Nolan's show, Outliers, features a riot of striking color with graphic punch to make personal contemporary imagery. Anything but tame, her figures convey raw emotion. “I'll do anything to create a mood,” says Nolan, skewing the form of the figure by abstracting features and using pulsating color.

Artist Michael Enn Sirvet opens at Adlon Design

Art and Home Fuse in Georgetown

Reception March 30, 6 - 8 pm
Adlon Showroom - 1028 33rd Street NW - Washington DC 20007
Adlon Design announces an installation of Artist Michael Enn Sirvet at their Georgetown venue. Sirvet has created new works and pairs them with select sculptures of metal, polymers, wood, and light.

Adlon Design will launch Sirvet’s contemporary design pieces, which are functional sculpture in their own right. The partnership was established when the Adlon design team and Sirvet came together to create a one-of- kind sculptural wall for a private residence.

Sirvet describes his work as a "collision between industrial precision and natural organic forms." Across the different aspects of Sirvet's work, from sculpture to contemporary craft and design, his style is connected. The works are wedded by an interpretation of transformation as seen in the natural world and the impact of mankind. The artist turns metal into flame and polymers into light, causing the viewer to consider alternative form.

“Art from the Exurbs” Work by Margaret Kennedy at Age 82.

Margaret Kennedy, 82 year old Abstract Expressionist artist.
Reception: Saturday, March 24, 6pm – 8pm
@ 1515 14th St. NW, Washington, DC.

Curated by Jo Israelson, Firehouse Studio
Everyday, for 24 years, Margaret Kennedy paints in her Brushmark Studio in the quiet town of Burkittsville, Md. The space is chock a block full of canvases whose origin is, as she explains, “…entirely intuitive. It is centered, then comes around like a circle – like meditation.”

Having spent her time in NYC during the 1950’s, she considers herself a 2nd generation abstract expressionist.  Schooled in printmaking, followed by 15 years as a leaded stained glass artist, Kennedy completed a Master of Divinity from Indiana University. She then became a soup kitchen pastor by day and an emergent painter at night.  Eventually, the painter won out.
Sponsored by Stages Premier Realtors, this exhibition marks the third in the series:  “Art from the Exurbs” featuring works from beyond the beltway.

These revolving exhibitions offer an innovative way to support the arts emphasizes Anthony Bozzi, Vice President of Operations:
We wanted to stay true to the building’s current usage as art galleries, as well as contribute to the arts community, by inviting artists to exhibit in the former art gallery.
All exhibitions are open to the public. The work may also be viewed Monday through Friday, 1 pm – 5 pm or by appointment until April 27, 2012. Contact Rod Rochowiak, Stages, 202.449.8657.

Elizabeth Holtry at Hillyer

Artist talk with Elizabeth Holtry at Hillyer Art Space
Saturday, Feb 18 from 12 - 1 pm

Holtry's paintings depict animals that few people appreciate, such as hyenas, insects, and rats.  Often wondering why is it that people advocate equality between humans, yet so freely discriminate in our opinions of animals, her work addresses our prejudicial attitudes toward these animals.

Holtry's inspiration also comes from an ongoing interest in the decorative arts and textiles.  Toile de Jouy mimics the style of historic toile de jouy, a type of fabric that originated in France in the late eighteenth century depicting a myriad of pastoral scenes-such as people fishing, sitting by a lake, farming, or children playing.

Elizabeth Holtry's exhibition Toile de Jouy is on view at Hillyer Art Space now through the end of February.

The Garden Path / Consistency and Change in Botanic Art

March 15 through April 29, 2012
Artist's Reception / Sunday, March 18, 4 to 6 pm (free)

From the pale green corkscrew tendril of vine depicting hope and promise to a beetle-chewed leaf edge that portends death and decay, contemporary botanical artists employ both art and technical mastery in their work. With references ranging from wild spaces, to historic gardens, to contemporary urban "greenspaces", this show uses botanical art to help us understand our place in the world.

The Garden Path contains works by members of the Botanical Art Society of the National Capital Region (BASNCR), and is curated by botanical artist Marcia DeWitt.

"Transforming Trauma" workshop, April 1st led by pro-bono attorney and yoga instructor Bela Shah.
Through the titles and content of my work, I paint a narrative that explores the cyclical nature of healing -- sometimes there is reconciliation with the past, other times there is the feeling of being frozen in a single moment, and still in other moments there is absolute re-empowerment, achieved by channeling our energies into creating and sustaining a better self. - Nadia Janjua

Tom Block / Book Discussion at Kefa Cafe Today

March 16, 7 pm
Tom Block discusses his book
"Shalom/Salaam: A Story of a Mystical Fraternity"

Space 7:10 @ Kefa Cafe
937 Bonifant St.
Silver Spring, MD
Tom Block will discuss his book, "Shalom/Salaam: A Story of a Mystical Fraternity," which introduces the story of respectful interfaith relations between Sufis and Jewish spiritual thinkers for nearly one thousand years.  From the inception of Islam, to the Golden Age (8th-12th centuries) Jewish-Sufis of Arabia, North Africa and Spain, through the Kabbalists in Spain and the Holy Land, and then into 18th-century European Hasidism, Islamic ideas strongly influenced the Jewish mystical system. Even today, Sufi and Islamic influences, many which can be traced back into the Qu'ran, inform Jewish worship and meditation practices.

Tom has talked about this groundbreaking study at the Chief Rabbi's Office in Istanbul; al-Azhar University in Cairo; Columbia University (NY); Middlebury College (VT) and at Mosques, Synagogues and interfaith groups throughout the United States.

Artomatic Announces New Location in Crystal City for 2012 Event

Crystal City, VA— Artomatic 2012, which will open on May 18th in Crystal City, has been moved to a different building. Formerly planned for 2511 S. Clark, the new location is 1851 S. Bell Street.

“While we were working to finalize the agreement for Artomatic to use Transwestern’s Presidential Tower on S. Clark Street, Vornado/Charles E. Smith (Vornado) announced plans to replace 1851 S. Bell Street with a signature new building that will be readdressed as 1900 Crystal Drive. Before the building is torn down, Vornado offered to house Artomatic in 1851 S. Bell Street,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID). "This presented an amazing opportunity to showcase the transformation of Crystal City. On behalf of Artomatic and the Crystal City BID, I would like to thank Mitchell Schear, President of Vornado/Charles E. Smith and his entire team. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the team at Transwestern, and are excited to work with them on another project in the near future.”

The new location is about 50,000 square feet larger and just one block from the Crystal City Metro Station, with plenty of parking and great restaurants nearby. Artomatic will transform this space into a vibrant arts community opening on May 18, 2012. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.crystalcity.org.

“Places I Have Left Pieces of Myself”

Freda Lee-McCann and Elena Stamberg

Music by Bud Wilkinson and guests

@
Adah Rose Gallery
3766 Howard Ave

Kensington Md, 20895

Freda Lee-McCann
All traditional Chinese art flows from the desire to depict imaginary landscapes which reflect the inner longings of the artist’s heart and mind.  The beauty of the brushstroke is married with the rigorous discipline of an art form that is thousands of years old.  Freda Lee-McCann’s work relies on the vocabulary of classical Chinese painters fused with the influence of modernists such as Brice Marden, David Hockney, and Robert Rauschenberg.  Ms. Lee-McCann’s work uses the simplicity of her materials to convey a meditative journey into vast landscapes on an intimate scale.  By limiting her palette primarily to black ink underscored by minimal intrusions of watercolor, collage, and calligraphy, she explores the contemporary themes of abstraction in nature.

Elena Stamberg
The fragility and beauty of the imagined landscapes of Elena Stamberg are expressed by the delicate and perfect balance between layers of fabric, color and thread.  Each landscape is an exposed tapestry, meant to elicit the desire to touch and become intimate with the work.  Ms Stamberg is influenced by a strong sense of craft and reverence for the traditional handiwork of women akin to contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin and Judy Chicago.  Ms. Stamberg is personally influenced by the rich, decorative and textural surfaces in the works of Gustave Klimt, the simplicity of a drawing by Paul Klee, and the idiosyncratic humor of Joseph Cornell’s boxes. Using techniques as simple as connecting one line with another, Ms. Stamberg’s wondrous pieces expose the whimsicality that informs life with its unexpected, unusual and delicious moments.

Mike Parker: Drawings

Studio 1469 - 1469 Harvard Street NW REAR, Washington DC,

Studio 1469 is thrilled to present visual artist and techno dj Mike Parker in his first solo exhibition in the District. Mike Parker: Drawings will feature approximately 17 recent figurative artworks.

What the artist calls "noise," sounds that others might tune out or tone down, has always been fascinating to him. Over some 30 years he has forged various paths in which to amplify: first by djing; then building instruments from found materials, later pressing records of the subsequent recordings; and learning the techniques of modular synthesis. He then returned to the art of he dj by way of "techno", a form of music that to Parker was an amalgamation of every form of noise that influenced him previously.

At the same time, drawing has always been essential to Mike Parker's practice. It was constant almost unabated throughout his formal education and continues today.  The figure is the subject, often fragmented and reduced to gestural interpretations. An optical type of noise developed as the drawings became untamed, subjective.  Parker in his own words, says it best. "I've been fortunate enough to be able to indulge in this kind of [artistic] activity.  I'm not yet completely satisfied, but optimistically believe
that my best drawings and recordings haven't been made yet.   And no, I will not turn the volume down."

ABOUT THE SPACE
Studio 1469 (www.studio1469.com) is a newly constructed studio, designed and created with multi-disciplinary uses in mind. The space is both a blank slate and a ready to use opportunity for rehearsal, instruction, and creation. Gallery style lighting along with abundant natural light, combined with reinforced soundproof walls enables both choir or painter, ensemble or shutterbug to make things happen within this secluded yet wonderfully situated building.

ISABEL MANALO

bits of elsewhere

March 10 - April 14, 2012

opening reception for the artist
Saturday, March 31st, 6-8pm
@
Addison/Ripley Fine Art

"Bits of Elsewhere" is Isabel Manalo's second exhibition at Addison/Ripley Fine Art. Her characteristic white space is still prominent in these new paintings and drawings, but the artist's exploration of textures has literally exploded onto her surfaces, barely contained by the limits of edges. The artist balances chaos and order in the new work, fracturing, dripping, collaging and entwining material onto Yupo and Mylar. Continuing to work from photographs and distilling primary source materials in Photoshop, Ms. Manalo offers a vision that, on the one hand reduces her imagery to monochromatic shadow-like forms in alizarin and burnt umber tones while, on the other, presents a bright, fractal complexity. There are moments of quiet here set beside a passionate intensity and presented with the artist's sure, careful hand.

Ms. Manalo's involvement with and recognition by the Washington art com-munity marks her as an important voice both through her art and her web-based presence with The Studio Visit. Her curatorial vision and generous acceptance of other artists was evident in her exhibition last year at this gallery, CultureScape. In addition, a recent retrospective of the artist's work was presented at the German Marshall Fund in 2011.

HANDPAINTED 20' x 35' WALLSCAPE PROMOTES NEW KEHINDE WILEY EXHIBITION AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM

WALLSCAPE RECREATES IMAGE OF ONE OF ARTIST'S LARGE-SCALE PAINTINGS AT HOUSTON AND MOTT STREETS

The Jewish Museum, in conjunction with the opening of its exhibition, Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel, is trying something new. Its advertising agency, Our Man In Havana (OMIH), has conceived and is overseeing a hand-painted reproduction of a Kehinde Wiley painting as a giant wallscape on the northeast corner of Houston Street and Mott Street in Manhattan. A video documenting the installation will also be created and released online to generate additional awareness for the exhibition.

The 20' x 35' wallscape is being painted over the course of this week by three artists from Overall Murals - a Brooklyn-based company whose other clients include the Whitney Museum of American Art and the New Museum. The wallscape will remain on view through May 23, 2012.

Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel will be on view at The Jewish Museum from March 9 through July 29, 2012. The exhibition features 14 large-scale paintings from the contemporary American painter Kehinde Wiley's newest series, The World Stage: Israel. The vibrant portraits of Israeli youths from diverse ethnic and religious affiliations are each embedded in a unique background influenced by Jewish ceremonial art. Also included are 11 works - papercuts and large textiles - chosen by the artist from The Jewish Museum's collection. Wiley chose to display these works of ceremonial art alongside his paintings to create a dynamic interchange between the contemporary and the traditional. All the 14 paintings on view are being displayed in New York for the first time.

One of the most significant young artists working today, Kehinde Wiley currently lives and works in Beijing, Dakar and New York.

The Jewish Museum is located at 1109 Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street, New York City. For information, the public may call 212.423.3200 or visit the website at TheJewishMuseum.org.

What is your Tar Baby?

Thursday, March 8 at 6:30pm

What do President Barack Obama, Adolf Hilter, Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Pee-wee Herman have in common? According to Atlanta-based artist Charly Palmer, each has a “Tar Baby.” In this collection of over 40 mixed media works, Palmer appropriates and reinterprets the tale of “Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby” to address contemporary issues of bigotry, racism, and stereotyping. Yet, in Palmer’s version it is no longer the archetypal trickster rabbit, but rather civil rights leaders, entertainers, politicians, scholars, and African and Native Americans who confront their tar babies.

Join Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery for a conversation with Charly Palmer on Thursday, March 8th at 6:30pm in the gallery. Palmer will be joined by curator, Myrtis Bedolla, and catalog essayist, Horace D. Ballard, Jr. to discuss the series' charged historical context and commentary on contemporary issues of bigotry, racism, and stereotyping. Learn more about Charly Palmer and read his artist statement.

Charly Palmer's What is your Tar Baby? will run from February 24th - April 7th.

Black, White and In Between

New Work in Polymer Clay by Fran Abrams
Feb. 29 through April 1

Opening Reception -- Friday, March 2, 6 - 8 pm
Informal Artist Talks and Tours -- Saturday, March 10, 1:00 - 5:00 pm

Fran Abrams' work typically involves color and geometry.  Color because the colors of polymer clay can be vibrant in themselves, but also blend like paints.  Just as in painting, the proportion of each color in the blend affects the outcome of the resulting color.

For this show, Fran explored only black and white clay and the grays that result from blending the two.  Her inspiration came from Washington politics where it seems lately that everything is black or white and there is no in between.

“Tracks” Pete McCutchen

Opening Reception: Friday, March 2, 6 - 8:30pm

Pete McCutchen’s show, Tracks, marries elegant and vibrant colors, and then gives it a Pop-Art inspired twist. “I decontextualize,” says McCutchen, describing his approach to photography.  In this case, he has isolated the lines of roller coaster track against a clear sky, playing with line, form, composition, and -- in particular -- color.

FRIDA KAHLO: HER PHOTOS
The celebrated artist's life revealed through personal photos
On view Feb 23 - March 25 / Admission is always free

Artisphere celebrates Frida Kahlo with related ticketed programming featuring Mexican, Mexican-American and Latina artists!

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)’s extraordinary life and iconic biographical paintings have earned her international renown in the world of modern art. Upon Kahlo’s death in 1954, more than 6,500 personal photographs and items belonging to her and husband/artist Diego Rivera were sealed and put in storage.  For more than half a century this great collection of personal memorabilia remained hidden from the public.  In 2007 this collection was opened and Mexican photographer and curator Pablo Ortiz Monasterio inventoried and catalogued 240 images to create the Frida Kahlo: Her Photos exhibition. These images reveal a little-known side of the artist and lifelong resident of Coyoacán, a Mexico City suburb and Arlington, Virginia's sister city. Artisphere is the first and only U.S. venue to present this exhibition.
