La Bestia: Sweet Mother, An Immigrant's Tale is a musical and dance performance which was developed and debuted in New York's East Village in 2014, having played at Theater for the New City, as well as the 14th Street Y Theater.  This dance/music event is a ballad which tells the story of Valencia, a Honduran immigrant who suffers indignities and threats to live her dream: coming to the United States to start a new life.  It is told as myth, a story within a story within a story, bringing together the timeless and the particular.
The musical component, created by Desiree Miller (Cello) and Becca Weiss (singer) underscores the libretto (by Tom Block) with virtuosity and a variety of styles.  The concert will include a special guest appearance by Liz Higgins, who will dance her own original choreography, created for this show.  Liz has traveled the world dancing for the Nikolai Dance Company, as well as dancing at the Joyce Theater (NY), Kennedy Center (DC) and many other venues around the country and world.
Music reviewer Colin McGuire (Frederick, MD News-Post) noted: "Impressive and ambitious don’t even begin to scratch the surface. Becca Weiss has a richly perky voice that jumps from spoken-word to harmony-laden on a dime. Paired with cellist Desiree Miller, who fills out an empty background with a palate of colors that would make Georgia O’Keeffe blush, the attack works fantastically . . . The level of difficulty behind “La Bestia: Sweet Mother” is both exceptional and uncommon.  Miller and Weiss wrote and performed the music, and while it was recorded in New York’s East Village, you almost want to believe it was created somewhere within the depths of your own psyche — the whole thing simply feels that personal.  An amalgam of talent combines with otherworldly goals here, and it all adds up to one big Wow."
Running time 50 minutes, including dance.

AMEN: A Prayer for the World at the National Cathedral in Washington DC

31 August - October 6th, 2014

48 artists (30 from Egypt and 18 Western artists) were given a life sized fiberglass figure in prayer to do with as they saw fit. DMV artist Lilianne Milgrom created an interactive installation whereby the public can participate by scanning the code directly off her angel, or going to www.virtualangel.weebly.com to send an anonymous silent or written prayer out into the world. I encourage readers to participate in the interactive installation! It only takes 12 seconds of your time.

The show is quite spectacular and  is open to the public all September through October 6 at the National Cathedral.  Lilianne Milgrom and another local artist, Lynn Goldstien, will be on hand September 20th between 1-3 PM.

at  the

National Cathedral
