MAGGIE SINER

Maggie Siner: The Art of Perception
Washington, D.C. by Anne Marchand, July 1, 2015

This summer while on tour at the Venice Biennale, I had the great pleasure of visiting painter Maggie Siner’s studio in her piano nobile apartment.  Maggie graduated from American University in 1976 and has lived, painted and taught for extended periods in France and China. She currently has a studio in a centuries old building on one of Venice’s romantic canals where she has been painting since 2008.

I met Maggie at the fruit seller near Campo Santa Maria Formosa and we walked the short distance to her studio apartment. Her place is centrally located on a quiet calle and is filled with white light from floor to ceiling windows. The color of light is an important element in her work.

Maggie was careful to select a studio location that reflects pure white north light onto her subject matter. She offered me tea and cookies while we savored the ambiance of her second floor studio filled with her paintings. Her balcony overlooks the canal below where gondolas glide. I can imagine her watching the watery pace of life in Venice.

Maggie showed me the works hanging on her studio walls that had recently been shown at the Galleria d’arte ARKE this year. Her gallery created a beautiful catalog to accompany her solo exhibition.

Maggie’s studio subject and set-up was arranged in order that she see her still life table from a distance. This current view gives her work the perspective that she seeks. The series focuses on overflowing and undulating material on a lavishly set tabletop with a mysterious dress. Folds and movement become color shapes of a dress on a chair, a Pekinese, plates, glasses and spoons, remnants that hint of an enchanting evening the night before. Maggie works exclusively from life. In her artist statement she says, "Let the forms of an object be what it may - the light, shade and perspective will make it beautiful."

Classically trained, Maggie’s work looks contemporary. She has an ease of composition with shapes, colors and oil paint choreographed to produce poetic passages that allude to time, place, memory and recognition. Her evolving themes with soft drapery from beds, and dining tables recently took on the addition of a figure that occupies the formerly discarded dress. Maggie invites a friend to be the sitter in her works. One beautiful, alluring woman occupies a red dress in her paintings. The color red thrusts forth from velvety atmospheric colors and was the first fiery passage to catch my attention.

Maggie’s brushwork is almost abstract expressionism and the whole melody of light, pattern, color and shapes come together in a reminiscent experience and richness of the senses. She captures moments in time that are a feast for the eyes.

In her earlier bed series, fabrics held the shapes of time and action in the theatre of the night. Our most intimate and vulnerable selves lie in the dark and are revealed by the light of day in the folds and shape of the vacated beds.  Maggie’s newest table theme came about through the movement of her daily life. A new piece of furniture appeared, a movement of objects in the room, a table received new fabric and a new still life was born. Light was etched on new forms and a story began to unfold. A place setting was added and a new process of discovery began in this ancient setting mixed with sparkling light and calligraphic marks. The figure, seemingly at rest in Maggie’s energetic brushwork, comes to life amidst the shapes and folds of the composition.

I asked Maggie what she loved about living and painting in Venice. She mentioned the water, light and sky that speak to her and informs her art in ways that inspire. She loves the walkability, lack of cars and the water, which is truly the lifeblood of Venice. She also loves all the great art in Venice.  Ancient surfaces and architecture are enduring qualities that capture her eye. In a bin on the left side of her studio, Maggie showed me a series of small oils on linen that she paints on location in the tradition of plein-air painting. Donning a 15 lb. backpack, she goes into the streets on a visual discovery to compose the shapes and light of the city and water in masterful compositions that delight the viewer.

Siner is a devoted teacher who has influenced a generation of painters. She has been on the faculty of L'institut Américain and the Lacoste School of Art in France, a visiting professor at Xiamen University in China, artist in residence at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Dean of Faculty at the Washington Studio School and teaches many workshops around the country. She is a frequent guest artist and public speaker appreciated for her revealing lectures on the internal workings of painting. She studied medicine at the Faculté de Médecine in Marseilles and taught anatomy at Georgetown Medical School. She is well known for her expertise in artistic anatomy and human movement. Since 2008 she has spent much time painting and exhibiting in Venice, Italy, enamored of that city's ever-changing surfaces. She returns annually to the Washington DC area where she gives workshops at the Washington Studio School.

ANNE MARCHAND: VISION OF MYTH

ANNE MARCHAND: VISION OF MYTH
extended January 2015.

ANNE MARCHAND
VISION OF MYTH

Anne Marchand explores a new vocabulary of color and texture in the swirling vortexes of nebulae and the surfaces of moons and planets, bringing these into her ongoing search for ways to approach mystic poetry through visual expression. The exhibition brings together works inspired by images from the Hubble spacecraft that relate to the artists theme of interconnections.

Anne Marchand is based in Washingon, DC. She was awarded an Artist Fellowship in 2014 from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Anne Marchand's studio presented in E. Ashey Rooney's Artists Homes and Studios

Artists Homes and Studios will be out in book stores in six weeks
making for a belated holiday or a New Year's gift.

E. Ashey Rooney"s Artists Homes and Studios (Schiffer 2014)

Who doesn't enjoy peeking into another artist's creative space, to see where and how they paint? For many it is a very personal space.

Having worked with so many artists in undertaking the 100 New England, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Southern, Northwestern, Southwest, and Green Art books, Rooney toured the homes and studios of 86 international artists. Some studios are large, with lovely high ceilings and oversized skylights. Some are modest - even cramped. Some are amazingly pristine and carefully ordered with drawing, painting gallery and meditation zones. Some are a study of chaos, but in all of them the artists appear to create.

She found that today's studios range from chicken coops to entire islands, to extra bedrooms to horse barns. Artists feel strongly about how they organize their studios, where they store their canvases and other works of art, how they keep their brushes and tools, and hang their art. One of the primary differences seems to be whether the artist likes the hubbub of other people and artists about. Some talk about the need for others, while others enjoy the freedom of padding down the hall in their slippers late at night to work on a piece. They want the peace and quiet and the quiet retreat. Others like to be part of a community.

Many talk about their music systems and gardens. Dogs appear to be faithful companions. Many collect natural objects to inspire them. Big or small, tidy or messy, the artist studio is obviously a sanctuary – a place for creative incubation, as Joseph Campbell would say.

DMV artists featured in the book include Alan Binstock, Tom Block, Joan Danziger and Anne Marchand.

Order it through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Opening Of Leonard Cohen Photography Exhibit in Soho This Saturday

On Tour with Leonard Cohen, photographs by Sharon Robinson
Book Signing and Exhibition

Saturday, December 13th - 1 to 4 PM

116 Prince Street - 2nd Floor
SoHo, NYC 10012

This event is open to the public. Books can be purchased at the signing.

Grammy-winning songwriter, and longtime Leonard Cohen creative collaborator, Sharon Robinson will exhibit innovative and intimate musical journey photo collection of Cohen at Morrison Hotel Gallery.

On Saturday, December 13th from 1 to 4 PM at Morrison Hotel Gallery in SoHo, 116 Prince Street, 2nd floor, NYC, Grammy-winning songwriter, and longtime Leonard Cohen creative collaborator, Sharon Robinson will exhibit a fascinating collection of images. On Tour with Leonard Cohen, photographs by Sharon Robinson will showcase profoundly emotional photographs taken from Sharon's iPhone documenting five years of touring with legendary poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. The showcased photos are part of Sharon's mesmerizing new book, On Tour with Leonard Cohen, photographs by Sharon Robinson to be released in December 9th by powerHouse books distributed by Random House. Sharon will be signing copies of her book at her MHG exhibit.

For thirty years, singer-songwriter Sharon Robinson has been associated with Leonard Cohen as a co-writer, producer, and vocalist. She co-wrote and produced Cohen's 2001 album, Ten New Songs (Columbia Records and one of Rolling Stone's "Top 100 Albums of the Decade"), and co-authored the Cohen classics, "Everybody Knows" and "Waiting for the Miracle." A fluidly creative soul, Sharon is also a poetically expressive photographer. Sharon once worked as the staff photographer at the world-famous Coconut Grove nightclub in Los Angeles. Leonard has said of Sharon, that she has "...an eye as fine as her ear."

In 2004, Leonard Cohen's manager stole his life savings, forcing him out of retirement to tour again. Sharon's photos in this exhibit capture five of the six years of this anthemic and vulnerable music journey that became one of the most revered tours in recent music history. The majority of the images were taken with Sharon's iPhone, which was crucial in capturing these images with the warmth and candor so evident in the photography.  Robinson reveals the nitty-gritty of day-to-day life of the road, onstage and behind the scenes, and the chemistry of Cohen and his supporting artists, together on an incredible journey across the globe, their hearts and minds focused on the next show. "I kept my iPhone in my pocket so I could capture a moment in a second. I hope the spontaneous nature of this collection helps to convey how deeply emotional and extremely rewarding this journey was," she says.

These photos have been anthologized in the exquisite book, On Tour with Leonard Cohen, photographs by Sharon. Sharon penned the book's introduction and New York-based author Larry "Ratso" Sloman, best know for his literary associations with Red Hot Chili Peppers vocalist Anthony Kiedis, Howard Stern, Bob Dylan, and Abbie Hoffman, wrote an essay for the foreword. Sharon will be doing a volley of activity in conjunction with the book's release, including book signings and live musical performances. She will appear at Subculture on Saturday, December 12th at 11:30 PM in NYC. In February 2015, Sharon will issue her highly anticipated second solo album, Caffeine.
Sharon Robinson has been associated with Leonard Cohen since touring with him as a singer in 1979-80. A Grammy-winning songwriter, Robinson's work has been covered by artists as diverse as Patti LaBelle, Don Henley, Aaron Neville, and Roberta Flack to name a few. Robinson's solo album, Everybody Knows (2008), garnered wide critical acclaim, as have her recent performances on the Cohen World Tour.
