A San Francisco native with art history degrees from Berkeley and UC Davis, the artist (b. 1948) has exhibited work at DC's Gallery K, the National Portrait Gallery, San Francisco's Braunstein/Quay Gallery, Jan Baum Gallery in Los Angeles, the Robert Lehman Art Center at Brooks School and the American University Museum. This is his second solo show at DFA.

Lawrence is also a writer, curator, and art-PR specialist. He served as the Hirshhorn Museum's press officer from 1975 to 2003 and an occasional curator there, and more recently organized "Roger Brown: Southern Exposure," for the Jule Collins Smith Museum at Auburn University, Alabama. Lawrence is a frequent contributor to artnet.com and Art in America and periodically performs locally as a jazz vocalis
