Beat It: Howl in the City - Modern Luxury Washington DC - Style


July 23-24, 8PM; tickets $10.

In honor of the National Gallery of Art’s landmark exhibition, Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg, literary hotspot Busboys and Poets hosts the two-night performance showcase, Howl in the City. Renowned poet Anne Waldman, a friend of Ginsberg’s and one of few females of beatnik bravado, will perform the epic poem accompanied by a string quartet. The series’ second night will feature a free patio performance by musician Kyp Malone of alternative rock band, TV on the Radio.

Art of the Soul is an exhibition that expresses poignant issues related to women that are often felt but often deemed inappropriate to discuss. Through the use of painting, sculpture, installation, video and fashion, twenty selected artists from around the United States will come together to endow a visual voice to self-esteem, empowerment, beauty, sexuality and domestic violence. "After the Election" Discussion at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C.

"After the Election" will be a political roundtable discussion exploring Social, Economic, and Political issues surrounding the Election and America's future.

The panelists will be:

Professor Allan Lichtman - Lichtman began teaching at American
University in 1973, rising to chair of the History Department, and was named Scholar/Professor of the Year in 1993. Outside of the classroom, Lichtman has testified as an expert witness on civil rights in more than 70 cases for the U.S. Department of Justice and for civil rights groups such as the NAACP, the MexicanAmerican Legal Defense and Education Fund and Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. He also consulted for Vice President Al Gore and Senator Edward Kennedy. He assisted the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights investigation into voting irregularities in Florida during the 2000 election[1], submitting an extensive report of his statistical analysis of balloting problems. Lichtman concluded "there were major racial disparities in ballot rejection rates".[2] Lichtman is the author or co-author of six books and more than 100 articles. He is best known for the "Keys" system, presented in his books The Thirteen Keys to the Presidency and The Keys to the White House

Mr. David Swanson - David Swanson holds a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Virginia. He has worked as a newspaper reporter and as a communications director, with jobs including press secretary for Dennis Kucinich's 2004 presidential campaign, media coordinator for the International Labor Communications Association, and three years as communications coordinator for ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Swanson is Co-Founder of AfterDowningStreet.org and Washington Director of Democrats.com, a board member of Progressive Democrats of America, the Backbone Campaign, and Voters for Peace, and a member of the legislative working group of
United for Peace and Justice.
