Through the Looking Glass: Paintings by Joey P. Mánlapaz
Exhibition on view at the Corcoran Corridor, Corcoran Gallery of Art
January 14 through February 15, 2009
The Corcoran College of Art & Design, Corcoran Gallery of Art, highlights approximately 10 recent paintings by faculty member Joey P. Mánlapaz.
Reception to meet the artist
Thursday, January 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Joey P. Mánlapaz, prominent Washington, DC photorealist painter and faculty member at the Corcoran College of Art & Design since 1992, exhibits her recent paintings at the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s Corcoran Corridor – exhibition space in the museum that highlights work by faculty members selected by Corcoran Gallery curators.
This exhibition showcases Mánlapaz’s technical painting prowess. Says art critic and independent curator F. Lennox Campello, “I am familiar with Manlapaz's works and she has refined her skill to a level where I consider her amongst the best photo-realistic painters that I've seen in the last few years and certainly around here (Washington, DC). … each painting meticulously describes complex visual problems made to look easy in their delivery by a master painter.”
Recognized for her paintings of 19th-century architecture of Washington, DC, Joey P. Mánlapaz continues with her “Reflections Series” – highly complex paintings of reflections on storefront windows – a theme she started in the mid-90’s. Her 2003 solo exhibit at the American Institute of Architects introduced this series where she considered reflections of old buildings on glass windows as metaphor for the transitory nature of structures and their place in our memory.
