Public Memorial Service for Mark Planisek

Mark Planisek, WPA member and friend, passed away last weekend from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mark could always be spotted at art events around town, and had a massive network of friends and colleagues who will miss him dearly. A public memorial is being held at the National Portrait Gallery where Mark was an art handler for Saturday, July 11 at 9am.

Mark will be remembered as a committed friend, talented artist and a tireless and enthusiastic supporter of the visual arts in DC. DC Arts Center extends sincere condolences to Mark's family and his many friends. Read more about Mark, his life, work and valued contribution to the arts locally, nationally and internationally at the DC Arts Center website, the National Portrait Gallery Blog and the blog Art and Art Handling.

Like A Concert Tour, But With Sketchbooks.

Metropolis, Mark Planisek

EXHIBIT IN DC...
March 3, 2009
7:00 - 10:00pm Washington, DC
Museum of Contemporary Art DC

1054 31st St NW #9
Washington, DC 20007

Art House is taking all the sketchbooks on a 9 city tour to galleries and museums across the U.S. The goal of the exhibition is to encourage anyone to create artwork and build a collective of sketchbooks made by artists from all over the world.
Over 2,000 artists from around the country were sent a small Moleskine sketchbook. Their task was to fill the book with "everyone we know". Every book received back will be on display. Visitors are encouraged to pick up the books and freely browse through them. There will also a broadcast of the exhibition live via the internet so that everyone who participated or can't make the show can experience it.

Among the Crates and Barrels of Fine Art

I met up with Mark Planisek at one of the 9 X 10 WPA/C member shows this year. He was showing an intriguing series of mixed media collage boxes. Mark Planisek was interviewed by the Washington Post about his job at the National Portrait Gallery on December 23. Read the article HERE.
