REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS
MURAL ARTS PROGRAM
ARTIST-DESIGNED GATEWAY ELEMENT

This Request for Qualifications seeks an artist or artist-led team to create a series of art to mark the principal entry points into West Philadelphia. These site-specific works are being commissioned as part of a broader community development strategy. The public art component is being managed by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.
The selected artist or team will be asked to prepare conceptual designs for a prototype gateway or system of gateways, create one gateway artwork, and conceptualize a youth component that can be executed by MAP’s Mural Corps. The overall budget for conceptual design, the initial project and the artist’s involvement in the youth component is $42,500.
Deadline
All submission requirements for this Request for Qualifications must be received (not postmarked) by 4:00 pm on Friday, January 23, 2008 at the mailing/delivery address given below. Please note that submission will not be accepted via email or fax.
Timeline
Submissions will be due January 23, 4 p.m. This is a receipt, not a postmark, deadline.
Short-listed artists will be notified by January 27.
Short-listed artists will be invited to meet with the SCI West Philadelphia Steering on January 30.
Concepts will be due on at 4 p.m., February 20.
Short-listed artists will be invited to make presentations to the community on February 24.
Final selection will be made by February 27.
The gateway project must be substantially complete by June 30, 2009.
The Mural Corps component must be completed between June 29 and August 7.

Mural Arts Opens Exhibit In Philly Tonight
The Art of Restoration: The Mural Arts Program Inside and Out
Reception: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. | Lincoln Financial Mural Arts Center at the Thomas Eakins House | 1727-29 Mt. Vernon Street
Mural Arts invites you to the opening reception for The Art of Restoration: The Mural Arts Program Inside and Out, featuring art work created by the men in MAP's program at the State Correctional Institute at Graterford, and exhibits of mural-making from the Philadelphia Prison System, the Youth Study Center and St. Gabriel's Hall. Proceeds will benefit the inmate-artists and the SCI Graterford Prison Welfare Fund. A small mural completed by the men and women of the Philadelphia Prison System will be on display in the gallery. Remarks by special guest speakers Superintendent David DiGuglielmo of SCI Graterford, and Dennis Sobin, co-founder of the Prisons Foundation of Washington, DC. Arts in Criminal Justice National Conference

The Mural Arts Program is excited to be hosting the Arts in Criminal Justice National Conference this October 3rd through 6th. Registration is now available on-line at the Arts in Criminal Justice Conference website. This exciting Conference will convene over 200 artists, activists, nonprofit professionals, prison officials, judges, and policy makers on the subject of art in criminal justice. Participants will discuss successful programs from around the country, analyze the power of art to further the goals of restorative justice, and address the multiple challenges inherent in this work. MAP looks forward to sharing its successful models using mural-making and art creation as tools for crime deterrence and reparation through its mural programs in the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania prison systems, detention centers, alternative sentencing programs, and schools.
