The Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington announces that The Art League has been selected to be featured in the 2010-11 Catalogue. A panel of 100 expert reviewers from area foundations, corporate giving programs, peer non-profit organizations, and the DC government evaluated nearly 250 applications; The Art League is one of 70 outstanding nonprofits to be featured this year.
Now in its eighth year, the Catalogue’s mission is to generate visibility and resources for the best community-based nonprofits, and to create more meaningful experiences for donors. According to Barbara Harman, President and Editor for the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington, “We know that nonprofits have had another very difficult year, and the economy continues to create challenges: dollars are down and need is up. Individual donors can continue to make a real difference – as they did last year – keeping great organizations afloat during these tough times.”
The Catalogue raised $2.5 million in 2009-10, and has raised over $12 million since its inception in 2003.
The Catalogue enables smaller non-profits to tell their stories to individuals who would otherwise never hear them, and to encourage those individuals to get engaged and give. It also provides charities with a stamp of approval that tells donors they can invest with confidence because the Catalogue vets its family of nonprofits with great care.
20,000 individuals and hundreds of family foundations will receive copies of the print Catalogue in November, and others will visit the new Catalogue website (cfp-dc.org) the only regional philanthropy site of its kind in the country.
“Charities were selected for excellence, cost-effectiveness, and impact,” Harman said. “These are certainly among the best community-based nonprofits in the Washington region.”

Rosemary Feit Covey / The Art League Selected for Minds Wide Open Launch Event on March 11
The Torpedo Factory and The Art League will host the Alexandria launch on Thursday, March 11 starting at 6:30 pm. Launch events include presentations by distinguished Torpedo Factory women alumni; a solo exhibit of award-winning artist Rosemary Feit Covey’s wood engravings in The Art League Gallery with modern dance performances inspired by her work; and the opening reception and awards presentation in The Art League Gallery for our exhibition, HerStory. Events take place in the Target Gallery and The Art League Gallery.
Visually, the goal of the artwork in The Art League exhibit “HerStory” is to honor and explore personal stories and experiences about women throughout history, as well as in the present and in the future. Artists may enter works that either express a personal story or convey a personal memory or emotion about women or what it means to be female. They may also choose to visually covey the story of a historically famous woman or an event of importance to women. Artists are encouraged to think creatively and symbolically while exploring this theme. Barbara Rachko, Art League alumni, and now a well-established New York artist, will jury this exhibit.
Rosemary Felt Covey’s provocative images in her “Peep and Strip Show” exhibit force the viewer into the role of voyeur, either by demanding the viewer to observe her engravings through a peep show box, or on a photographer’s light box. Suggestive rather than overtly explicit, her wood engravings subtly deal with obsession on many levels. Modern dance will be featured throughout the evening inspired by Covey’s work.
