CATALYST: CALL FOR EPHEMERA / WPA
Deadline: September 8
WPA announces a call for WPA-related ephemera to be installed as part of Catalyst, WPA’s 35th Anniversary Exhibition, on view November 9 through December 19, 2010 at the American University Museum.
CATALYST will be a dynamic, narrative recollection of WPA’s legacy, showcasing selected artists, exhibitions, programs, and events from its 35-year history. The exhibition, curated by J. W. Mahoney, will include recent and period artworks, documentation in both still and moving media, a series of related performances and public programs, and a fully-illustrated catalogue.
Throughout its 35-year history, WPA has produced a wealth of printed matter, merchandise and, more recently, digital images, and video related to its events and exhibitions. Much of it is now lost, but what survives acts as an informal archive of the organization’s history.
We want to create a ‘wall’ of WPA memorabilia from 1975 to today that will greet museum visitors as they enter the exhibition. Loaned items will be tagged and a loan agreement issued so that they can be returned to you. There is also an option to donate the item(s) to our archives. Ephemera in digital form, including videos of WPA performances and events, will be posted on the exhibition’s website.
Appropriate materials include but are not limited to flyers, posters, postcards, tee shirts, catalogs, photographs, and videos from WPA events/exhibitions. Accepted ephemera will be installed in the exhibition space or posted online for the duration of the exhibition and a list of contributors acknowledged.

Running for cover(age) / WPA
A panel discussion on arts criticism in the DC area
Panelists: Jeffry Cudlin, Isabel Manalo, Danielle O’Steen
(Free and open to the public)
Coverage of Mera Rubell’s DC studio tour by journalist Jessica Dawson in The Washington Post touched a critical nerve in the DC arts community, and set off impassioned conversations on social networking websites such as Facebook about the quality of life for artists in the area. Artists, writers, and arts professionals weighed in on aesthetics, isolation, ambition and support for the visual arts.
This panel discussion will address questions about local arts media coverage and its effect on the cultural life of the city. During the Q&A portion of the program, panelists will provide suggestions of both existing and new models for generating dialogue about the arts.
Kriston Capps is a critic, reporter, and commenter. He contributes regular news and reviews to the Guardian, Art in America, Art Papers, Art Lies, the American Prospect, Huffington Post, and other publications. Kriston taught a graduate studio colloquium at the University of Maryland College Park and will teach an arts journalism course through the WPA ArtScribe program at George Washington University in the Spring.
Jeffry Cudlin is an artist, curator, art critic, and musician living and working in Washington, D.C. He serves as the Director of Exhibitions for the Arlington Arts Center and writes for the Washington City Paper.
Isabel Manalo is an artist represented by Addison Ripley Fine Art and Assistant Professor at American University’s Art Department in Washington, DC. She runs the award-winning blog The Studio Visit which features artists from the DC region in their studios.
Danielle O'Steen is a freelance journalist, contributing to publications such as Art + Auction, Capitol File, Flash Art and Washington Post Express. WPA Art Auction Gala Night 2009
Here are a few pictures from last nights WPA's 28th Art Auction Gala at the Katzen Arts Center, which judging by the crowd size was a much anticipated event. This noted event has grown in recognition and reputation as Washington's premiere contemporary art event for not only art collectors but also business, social, and art leaders in the community. All proceeds benefit the programs and exhibitions of the WPA.Seventy percent of the artists represented in the exhibition and auction are from the metropolitan area, according to outgoing WPA Director Kim Ward. The evening proved to be a meeting ground for artists, patrons, collectors, curators and at least four past and present WPA Directors. Attending was Annie Adjchavanich, Jennifer Motruck Loy, Kim Ward and incoming Director, Lisa J. Gold. Ms. Gold’s appointment as new Director, follows the nearly five-year leadership of Kim Ward, who successfully guided the WPA through the 2007 separation from the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and subsequent re-establishment of the WPA as a fully independent force in the arts community.
Initiated in 2006, the Washington Project for the Arts Alice Denney Award for Support of Contemporary Art is named for Alice Denney, the founder of the Washington Project for the Arts, and is presented annually to honor an individual who has supported the organization for a period of many years and has made a sustained commitment to the greater DC art’s community. This year the WPA Board of Trustees selected Jack Rasmussen as the Alice Denny Award recipient and presented him with the award at the Auction Preview Night on Thursday, February 26. Rasmussen has been the Director and Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center since 2004.

Aquifer
Washington Project for the Arts and the Washington Sculptors Group announce the opening of "Aquifer," an exhibition of work that explores the significance of water. For this show, curators J.W. Mahoney and Deborah McLeod have selected 35 artists who are particularly compelled to address the physical, psychological, metaphysical, and aesthetic qualities of water.
Both J.W. Mahoney and Deborah McLeod are seasoned curators and have long shared a particular interest in water themes. Mr. Mahoney has regularly engaged the symbolic qualities of natural forces, in both writings and exhibitions, and Ms. McLeod is currently producing a film titled "Purification" on the ancient connection between river baptisms and the assignation of the natural feature as a source of reconciliation with the sublime. "Aquifer is not a show that specifically intends to present the subject of water as a memento mori on human negligence and water's precipitous dearth," says McLeod, "it is instead about water's critical meaning to us in so many hierarchically varied aspects of survival and inspiration."
Selected artists include: Joseph Barbaccia, Dennis Beach, Christian Benefiel, Alan Binstock, Renee Butler, Richard Dana, Pattie Porter Firestone, Leah Frankel, Gail Gorlitzz, Pat Goslee, Nestor Guzman, Mila Kagan, Rebecca Kamen, Kathy Walden Kaplan, Tetsuya Kato, Joanne Kent, J.T. Kirkland, Barbara Liotta, Jacqueline Maggi, Howard and Mary McCoy, Ryan McKibbin, Emily Piccirillo, Beverly Ress, Pat Segnan, Mike Shaffer, Marilee Schumann, Lynda Smith-Bugge, Pamela Soldwedel, Lucy Norman Spencer, Betsy Stewart, Kazue Taguchi, Virginia Warwick, Paul Vickers, Amy Glengary Yang and Millicent Young.
Opening Reception: Nov. 8, 6-8pm,
Curatorial talk and artist panel discussion:
