Black at DCAC

Black Artists of DC and the DC Arts Center reveal Black, as it has never been seen before.

Opening Reception: Friday, November 20, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm
Artists Talks/Closing Reception: Sunday, January 10, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm

Jurors: Renee Stout, Blake Kimbrough, and Marvin Bowser
Curator: Amber Robles-Gordon
Co-Curator: Daniel T. Brooking
Judges: Teresia Bush and Eugene R. Vango

Black asks artists to think introspectively about the emotional and theoretical, the spiritual and cultural, the intellectual and physical aspects of their personal perceptions of blackness. Each artist's objective was to move beyond black as an absence of color and into the predominance of black as a physical and conceptual part of their creations. Artists were able to claim, adorn, redefine and enfold the black experience in and throughout their work. Audiences will be able to relish in black: it's elegance, depth, and sensation of infinity.

Black Artists of DC to Host Citywide “Legacy of Hope Open Studio Exhibitions” Proceeds to Support Obama Campaign through Obama For America

Washington, DC – Black Artists of DC (BADC) announced this month that they will host a one day “open studios” show and sale of their members’ work in order to raise funds to support Democratic Presidential nominee, Barack Obama. Forty celebrated artists from the Washington/Baltimore area - with original work that ranges in style, includes all media, and showcases techniques extending from the ancient to the innovative - will open their studios to the public on Sunday September 28, 2008 from 11:00 am -- 5:00 pm to help raise money for the Obama campaign.

According to group convener, Aziza Claudia Gibson-Hunter, “Throughout history, Art has been used as a vehicle for social and political change. We wanted to add our voices and efforts towards POSITIVE CHANGE. The event offers art lovers and collectors the unique opportunity to visit and view the works of various artists in their own studios. The public will be able to purchase original paintings, prints, wearable art, textiles, jewelry, ceramics, photography, sculpture and much more while supporting the campaign. Twenty percent of sales proceeds will be donated to the Obama campaign in the name of the art purchaser. We prefer checks for bookkeeping purposes.
