OPENING RECEPTION: July 11, 2009, 5 - 7pm
Images (details, left to right): Jeremy Haik, Clive Leung, Ding Ren, Erik Loften
This 6th installment of Transformer's Exercises for Emerging Artists program, guest curated by artist Brandon Morse, focuses on time-based media. Exploring notions of communication, commodity, transformation, and situation, artists Jeremy Haik, Clive Leung, Erik Loften, and Ding Ren employ video as well as digital animation techniques, and utilize installation practices that make the way they display their work essential to the work itself.
"Tasked to further develop and focus their existing formal and conceptual concerns, each of the artists were asked to spend considerable time investigating how setting and presentation may be used to further the strengths inherent in their work. While this may seem to be a self-evident concern for any artist, the very aspect of working with time-based media in a physical space presents unique obstacles and opportunities. Each of the artists took up this challenge, and their completed works are comprised of integral conceptual and physical components." - Brandon Morse
EXHIBITION HOURS: July 11 - August 15, 2009. Wednesday - Saturday, 1 - 7pm & by appointment.

All are invited to come out and enjoy fun, food, and entertainment.
Washington, DC – On Friday July 10, 2009, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty along with Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham; the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities’ Executive Director, Gloria Nauden; Ximena Hartsock, DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Acting Director; will join the Columbia Heights community at the new 14th and Girard Street Park for a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the completion and opening of DPR’s newest park.
Redevelopment of the park began with a community-driven planning and design process in spring 2007 with the goal of completely redeveloping the existing park to better serve the community. Demolition of the old park, which featured large amounts of concrete and little usable green space, began in December 2008, and construction of a completely new park began earlier this year. The DC Housing Authority provided construction management for this DPR capital improvement project.
The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, located just one block from the park, has joined with DPR as a community partner and will be overseeing a mural installation by a professional artist or artist team which will work with local residents and youth to design and install the work on the 750 square foot east wall of the outdoor multi-use playcourt.
“The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities is proud to participate in this great project. The Commission is committed to giving every community in the District the opportunity to experience the great work that our city's artists have to offer,” said Commission Executive Director, Gloria Nauden.
The Commission has recently received applications from DC artists and arts organizations to be considered by an art selection panel comprised of representatives from the community, youth, District government agencies, and architects. The selected artist will be required to facilitate at least five workshops for a group of youth in the neighborhood to participate in the design and installation of the mural.

Ryan Hill: Everything Must Go
July 10 - August 8, 2009.
Civilian Art Projects presents two exhibitions: "Ryan Hill: Everything Must Go" and "Upgrade," a group exhibition featuring Andrew Brown, Lindsay Buhman, Nicholas Carr, Benjamin Chetta, Cheraya Esters, Cory May, and Anna Wonson.
OPENING RECEPTION:
Friday, July 10, 2009, 7pm to 9pm
RYAN HILL: EVERYTHING MUST GO
In his first solo exhibition with Civilian Art Projects, artist Ryan Hill curates content from the "digital museums" of Google, YouTube and Flickr and reassembles it as works on paper in the gallery space. Quoting, tracing, and drawing from internet images, the artist describes his intimate installations as "a free range of associations, from the gothic to the absurd."
Hill's artist talk "Pretty Speeches" takes place on Thursday, July 23 at 6:30pm.
"Upgrade," a group exhibition featuring Andrew Brown, Lindsay Buhman, Nicholas Carr, Benjamin Chetta, Cheraya Esters, Cory May, Anna Wonson. Organized by Lindsay Buhman.
Upgrade features seven DC based artists whose work is focused on the quality product, the newest version, and the constant need for enhanced functionality and efficiency. The artists explore everything from computer glitches to how one's personal growth and identity develop within today's technologically flooded society. According to Lindsay Buhman who organized the exhibition, "our obsession with the upgrade continues not only because of its pervasive availability, but by the constant reminders we have embedded within the technology itself. The artists confront this human process and how we as a species decide to upgrade ourselves, and therefore how we evolve."

Through video, cut paper, drawing, painting, photography and sculpture, each artist employs a subtle humor that addresses the darker facets of contemporary existentialism. The work in this show (completely devoid of color), investigates this darkness with a cold, removed conceptual distance.

International Arts & Artists’ Hillyer Art Space presents
Six in the Mix: Selections by Renee Stout
Hillyer Art Space at 9 Hillyer Court, NW, presents Six in the Mix, a group exhibition curated by famed D.C. artist Renee Stout. The exhibition opened Friday, July 3rd, and runs through Friday, August 28, 2009.
Six in the Mix: Selections by Renee Stout brings together a divergent company of mid-Atlantic emerging and mid-career artists for Hillyer Art Space’s summer program. This show will feature the work of Cianne Fragione, Kenyatta Hinkle, Adam Griffiths, Marc Roman, James Swainbank, and Gilbert Trent.
Stout has set out to create a mixed bag of local talent not based in the obligatory conceptual framework predominantly exhibited in group shows. Instead of the varying inspiration and ideas behind the individual bodies of work, it is the “natural dialogue that may occur between these works” which Stout would like the audience to experience. “I also didn’t want the viewer to come into the exhibition with preconceived ideas about the works based on any theme that I had imposed. Instead, I simply chose to select work that resonated with me on an intuitive level, but there is no doubt that my penchant for political conspiracy theories, personal and cultural sensitivity to notions of beauty and my childhood love for horror films and Mad Magazine creeped in during the process,” says Stout.
Location: Hillyer Art Space
9 Hillyer Ct. NW (behind The Phillips Collection)
Washington, DC 20008.

Courage Unmasked / Save the Date

Cookie Kerxton and Carol Kanga are putting together the event "Courage Unmasked" fundraiser and exhibition at the American University Museum at the Katzen Art Center on September 9, 2009 to raise money for needy patients with head and neck cancer.
I just finished a mask called "Love Light" for this event. The masks are wonderful and you can see some of them at www.courageunmasked.org/.
On September 9, 2009, the American University Museum at the Katzen Art Center will host the totally unique fundraiser called "Courage Unmasked." More than 100 artists from all over the country are creating fine art by transforming radiation masks formerly worn by head and neck cancer (HNC) patients to position and immobilize their heads during treatment.
Save the Date September 9, 2009.
Information for Tickets to the event can be found at www.courageunmasked.org
Below is a letter from the organizers with hopes that you can contribute to the Fund.
Dear Friends,
Many of you know about the Courage Unmasked Event on September 9, 2009. For those of you that don’t, we are raising money for needy patients with head and neck cancer who are going through horrible cancer radiation and can’t even afford the basic necessities of food, medication, and transportation.
Here’s my ask of you. I would like you to donate the same amount you would spend for a latte or two ($10) to help these people. This would give them one or two meals to comfort them during this ordeal. We all forget the latte’s soon after our cup is empty, but for those whom we help, the kindness will forever remain in their hearts.
I have put significant effort into getting related medical companies to sponsor our event, but they have not come through with enough money, which is why I am asking all of you to be a part of this meaningful effort.
Donations are tax deductible, and all money raised will go to 9114HNC (Help for Head and Neck Cancer) a fund supported by the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) to aid indigent patients obtain necessities during and after radiation treatment.
The address of where to send donations is below.
I hope you will help. You are free to add as many zeroes as you like.
Sincerely,
Cookie Kerxton

Courage Unmasked
On September 9, 2009, the Katzen Art Center at American University in Washington, DC will host a fundraiser called "Courage Unmasked." More than 100 artists are creating unique art pieces by transforming radiation masks formerly worn by head and neck cancer (HNC) patients to position and immobilize their heads during treatment. It was during one such treatment session that this idea came to a patient, also an artist.
She wanted to ease the financial burden of needy HNC patients, helping them obtain medication, transportation and nutrition necessary to their treatment. The artist's colleagues and doctors quickly endorsed the idea of auctioning the artworks at a gala event. The proceeds will go into a charity fund named 9114HNC "Help for HNC Patients". It is anticipated that over 500 people will be in attendance.
