Red Bull Art of Can DC Opens This Week in Union Station

The Red Bull Art of Can exhibit is free and open to the public from October 8th to the 19th during Union Station’s regular business hours.

The Red Bull Art of Can gallery will be located in the DC Galleria, which is in the Main Lobby of Union Station.

The Red Bull Art of Can competition challenges artists to construct pieces created with or inspired by Red Bull Energy Drink and Red Bull Simply Cola cans. Fifty six pieces were selected for this year’s DC collection.

Innovative artists—professional and amateur—submitted their designs for consideration. Ultimately 56 pieces were selected to be a part of the DC Collection. The featured artists are creative types of all ages and occupations—from students to industrial designers and sales professionals to artists. The public exhibit curated by Val Lewton, former Chief of Design and Production at Smithsonian American Art Museum, will be housed in a the DC Galleria space designed exclusively for the collection in the Main Hall of Union Station.

Life Pieces to Masterpieces (LPTM) charity organization will also be benefitting from all Red Bull sales during the morning and evening rush hours while Red Bull Art of Can DC is on display. LPTM works with young, underserved African American males living in DC and uses arts-based curriculum to discover and activate their creative abilities. They have served more than 600 boys and young men, changing life challenges into possibilities and created more than 1,000 masterpieces.

A distinguished judging panel based their decisions on the overall creativity, execution and construction of each piece. Special honors will be awarded to the top three scoring artists including the grand prize—an all-expenses-paid trip to Art Basel, the world’s leading modern art exhibit in Switzerland. The public will also designate a “People’s Choice Award” by casting votes for the artists work at the exhibit and online at www.redbullartofcan.com.
