An Evening of Voice & Vision
May 19, 2010 – Corcoran Gallery of Art
DC SCORES announces an open call for artists of all types and experience to participate in their first annual Inspired Art Gala on May 19 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Combining poetry, soccer, and service-learning, DC SCORES runs one of the largest after-school programs in DC, serving 700 students in 7 of the 8 wards.
Throughout the school year, DC SCORES students devote countless hours to expressing themselves through creative writing. To commemorate their hard work and thoughtful pieces of prose, Inspired Art will feature pieces of art inspired by their youthful musings. Artists of every medium are invited to take an original poem from a DC SCORES student and create a piece of art inspired by their words and poetic imagery.
DC SCORES is enlisting local and national artists to create and submit original works inspired by the poetry of DC SCORES poet-athletes. While the vision of Inspired Art is to bring each student’s creative expression to life through the artistic lens of a professional artist, they also welcome donations of existing pieces of art that can be paired with students’ poems. All art submissions will be entered into the silent auction at Inspired Art, with 100% of the proceeds going to support the 700 DC youth whom DC SCORES engages annually.
The donated artwork will be displayed alongside original poetry written by DC SCORES students and auctioned off during the Inspired Art Gala held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art on May 19, 2010. In exchange for your tax-deductible donation of art,* artist will receive exposure to an audience of more than 250 Washingtonians in attendance. Artists will also receive one complimentary ticket to the Inspired Art Gala reception, with access to a special artist reception for networking and socializing with other local artists.
The funds raised at the Inspired Art Gala will support 700 DC SCORES poet-athletes across the District, empowering them to become creative leaders within their community. Questions, please contact Beth Morrison at bmorrison[at]americascores.org or 202.393.6999 x312.
All artwork must be submitted to DC SCORES by April 30, 2010.

*Artists, check with your tax consultant about a tax-deduction for donations of your artwork. The tax-deduction is generally the cost of the materials to produce the work of art. If you donate your own creations… you have basis in the amount it takes you to create it. In the case of an artist, it is easy to look at the item and add up the costs. There is no value assigned to the artists effort or skill.
