The Overview Effect

Forty years ago, the astronauts of Apollo 8 orbited the moon for the first time and snapped the iconic "Blue Marble" photographs of the earth from space. It was not only an image of stunning beauty; it represented a powerful new perspective of earthly life and its place within the cosmos. It produced a radical shift in self-awareness.....

Joan Belmar
In his recent paintings “Territories,” Joan explores psychological and political perspectives through the universality of maps. The series, based on maps from his native Chile, pay homage to the indigenous people who are so rarely referenced in anthropology and cartography. Finding himself suspended between the personal and universal as he rediscovered the maps of his childhood, Joan utilizes symbols, colors, drawings, grids, dots, and lines to search for freedom in a structured world. His works reference a time in our past that is impossible to recreate, but important to remember. Joan Belmar was born in Santiago, Chile and emigrated to Spain where he began to paint professionally. Joan moved to Washington DC in 1999. In 2003 he was granted permanent residency in the U.S. based on extraordinary artistic merit. Joan has shown internationally and in Washington, D.C. In 2009 the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities awarded him an Artist Fellowship Grant and in 2010 and 2013 he was awarded an Individual Artist grant in Painting from the Maryland Arts Council. This is his second show with Adah Rose Gallery.

Lori Anne Boocks
Lori Anne Boocks is the keeper of stories. The passage of time creates layers of experience through the remembering, misremembering, and forgetting of stories. Each of these moments are important influences on her painting and thinking. In her newest work, text continues to serve as both subject matter and the basis for mark-making. Texture for each piece comes from her hands, brushwork, and a subtractive process where layers of poured washes are added to the surface, then partially removed with cloth. Her exploration of stories hinges on the juxtaposition of multiple directions of depth, including time, space, mathematics, and meaning. Lori Anne Boocks earned a BFA from Old Dominion University in 1992. She has had solo exhibitions at Sitar Arts Center, Studio Gallery and the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center. She was a Semi Finalist in the Bethesda Painting Awards in 2012, awarded a Living Gallery Residency at the Annmarie Arts Center in 2011 and won a first place award at the Festival of the Arts in Portsmouth, VA. This is her second show with Adah Rose Gallery.

Reagan is both an accomplished artist and a careful cartographer, creating incredibly detailed contemporary and historical maps. Moving beyond the map’s utility, Reagan’s works are cartographic compositions with pictorial and emotional depth. Believing maps help us make sense of both the familiar and unfamiliar terrain, his work reveals humanity’s cultural diversity while expressing the universality of human emotion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON DC ARTISTS, ANNE MARCHAND, JODI WALSH AND TIM VERMEULEN
TO SHOW AT AFFORDABLE ART FAIR NEW YORK 2013

NEW YORK CITY, (SEPT. 23, 2013)— Affordable Art Fair New York will showcase the exciting artwork of Anne Marchand, Jodi Walsh, and Tim Vermeulen from October 3-6, 2013 at the Tunnel in Chelsea.

Anne Marchand received an M.F.A. from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. Anne’s award winning paintings convey universal rhythms in nature and the cosmos. She explores relationships in color, mark making, body movement and poetry on canvas to provoke a deeper inquiry into the origins of humanity. Anne is a full-time painter living in Washington, DC. She is represented by Porter Contemporary in New York and Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey, CA. www.annemarchand.com

Jodi Walsh left her native country of Canada in1967 for the Far East and Europe, a move that would influence her life and work forever. She moved to the United States in 1978 and while art has always been a part of her life she first began to emerge as a serious artist in 1995. Although Jodi has received private training, she has never studied painting or ceramics at an academic institution. This has allowed Jodi the independence and freedom to develop her unique style. Layering clay on the original textured surfaces has taken her work to a new level of expression. Capturing the colours and textures she experienced while living in Taiwan, Thailand, Bangladesh, Africa and Europe is a joy to her and she hopes to others. www.jodiart.com

Tim Vermeulen was born in Paterson, NJ. He received a B.A. from Calvin College (1982) and an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from The University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana (1986). His paintings are attempts to articulate in visual form, through symbolic and allegorical stories, a chaotic web of emotions and ideas that is at once deeply personal and about our universal condition. Tim was an art professor for 17 years, first at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL, and then at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He is currently a full-time painter living in Maryland and he is represented by Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago, IL. www.timothyvermeulen.com

Meet the artists who will be located at Alida Anderson Art Projects, Booth A14, www.alidaanderson.com at the show and view their artwork during Affordable Art Fair, October 3-6, 2013 at the Tunnel in Chelsea. http://affordableartfair.com/newyork.

Starting Small takes the idea of the traditional summer small works show in New York and focuses it on the aspects of collecting art. Many great collections have been started and even built on small pieces and small budgets and many collectors like to “start small” when first buying artwork to get their feet wet, especially in New York where wall space can be limited. This is the perfect exhibition to see a diverse selection by contemporary artists who are early, mid, and late career working in a variety of mediums. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, mixed media works, drawings and photography, offering up a wide selection of opportunities to either start your collection or add to it!
