Ian Whitmore, Settlement, 2008
Simone Leigh, Queen Bee, 2008
This is our Music showcases Whitmore’s polyglot style with a set of paintings that, rather than being bound by any one theme, are loosely tied by recurring motifs of fertility, aging, entanglement, and chaos. The work in this show continues Whitmore’s investigation into a painting’s abilities to be both retinal and textual, inspiring the question, is this an object of delectation or interpretation?
___________
Leigh’s sculptures are fetishistic, militaristic, feminate and historical. She combines her principal material ceramic with beeswax, tar, platinum, gold and graphite luster to contrast the utilitarian and the decorative.
Leigh will be installing Queen Bee in the project room, a large-scale grouping of singular objects that hang from a center point. As one mass they appear to be a body or originating from a body.
