Touchstone Gallery, owned and operated by an association of Washington DC area artists since 1976, is re-opening in a new space on New York Avenue September 10, with a "champagne celebration." Touchstone contracted for a light-flooded space with 15-foot ceilings in a premier office building on New York Avenue owned by Boston Properties. Touchstone President Michelle Cormier invites the public to “come share the excitement” of the gallery’s rebirth at its September 10 opening festivity, scheduled from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.
Characterized by monthly exhibitions of contemporary-style art, Touchstone features both solo shows and group exhibitions by member artists, many of whom have exhibited nationally. A variety of works is on exhibit--from paintings, sculpture, mixed media, clay, and glass to photography, collage, drawing, hand-pulled prints and installations.
Touchstone Gallery, one of the longest-tenured artist cooperatives in the DC area, has adapted to four changes of location in its 34-year history, and according to gallery director Ksenia Grishkova, owes its longevity to “an energetic and cooperative membership. It is a welcoming place for viewing and collecting affordable original art of uncompromising quality expressed in a diversity of materials and styles.”
Touchstone’s main goal is to promote the work of member artists. Director Ksenia Grishkova says that “each year Touchstone contributes a percentage of sales to local organizations that serve the community.” and "on ocassion provides a venue for select student work or guest artists.” The gallery hosts special exhibitions representing topical issues, rents space for special events, and provides free space to community organizations that promote poetry and theater.
