Installment II: Secret Garden an installation by Tom Block
April 16 - May 8, 2009
Opening Reception, Thursday, April 16th 5:30 - 7:30pm
at WPA headquarters 2023 Massachusetts Ave. NW
WPA member artist, Tom Block, presents Secret Garden, an installation of drawings and ideas inspired by the teachings of the Sufi mystics of Islam. The installation of over 300 pieces will spare no space within our office headquarters!
'Secret Garden' uses the teachings of the Sufi mystics of Islam as inspiration to create the installation. The exhibit is comprised of 350 small (7" x 5" and 6" x 4") panels, arrayed around the four walls of the gallery. Centered around the form of the circle, which visually holds together the series as well as most facilely represents the underlying theme of the Sufi Way, 'Secret Garden' includes fragments and collections of other ideas -- some recognizable and some not -- all of which symbolize different manners in which the unity of the universe can be expressed in our temporal world. Mixed in with the drawings are short sayings from Sufi poets throughout the centuries... - Tom Block
A reception to launch the exhibition will be held at WPA on Thursday, April 16th from 5:30-7:30pm. This event is free and open to the public.
Exhibition hours will be Tuesdays - Fridays from 11am - 4pm through May 8th, 2009
