Drink to Me, Contemporary Artist Views of Pablo Picasso 40 Years Later

(Washington, DC) – It’s a bit macabre to commemorate the occasion of Pablo Picasso’s death; but, 40 years later, his significant contributions to modern art will be celebrated at the Drink to Me show at Porter Contemporary in New York City this April.

Washington, DC Artist Anne Marchand contributed her work “Blue Curtain" to the group exhibition. “The qualities brought to the mainstream by Pablo Picasso of geometrical shapes, reduction of planes and monochromatic color, underpin ‘Blue Curtain’ as structure for the process of painting itself,” says Marchand. The work is 48” x 24" acrylic and mixed media on canvas.

“Picasso advanced modern art by creating emotion with shapes. Like Picasso, my work is also about emotional power. He looked to the form of the body, and I am looking at the formless outer space to evoke an expressive quality between form and movement," says Marchand.

The exhibition highlighting contemporary artists’ views of Pablo Picasso opens with an artists’ reception on April 4 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM and continues through May 18, 2013. The exhibition’s timing coincides with the 40 anniversary of Picasso’s death, April 8, 1973, and includes approximately 20 artists from around the world who are interpreting their vision of Picasso whether good, bad or indifferent. The exhibition will not be a recreation of Picasso’s works but rather an interpretation of them by contemporary artists. Porter Contemporary is located at 548 W. 28th Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10001. www.portercontemporary.com

Artist’s Statement:
Abstraction is my inquiry into the nature of life. As a painter, I am fascinated by the emotional power of color, music and poetry to engage the senses. From these painting platforms, I explore universal currents and rhythms with layers of paint, texture and words on canvas. Meaning takes shape in an environment where I invent forms and shapes to convey energy and movement. Traveling is one way that I gather resources and inspiration for my studio process. My current body of work reflects a fascination with inner and outer space and mystic poetry.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Resistance through Art

Art fulfils many purposes, not the least of which is to bring public awareness to social, political and cultural injustices. One of the greatest human injustices of all time was the Holocaust. April 7th, 2013 marks the official observation of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, with commemorative events taking place across the country.
The NVJCC begins the day's observation with the official opening of a group show entitled Resistance Through Art. Local artist Lilianne Milgrom is exhibiting a photographic series inspired by her mother, a Holocaust survivor. The series portrays the artist with her mother's concentration camp prison tattoo projected on her own person. Milgrom will also be one of the keynote speakers at the event.
