Ads VS Aids at Longview Gallery

An opening reception will be held on World AIDS Day.

WORLD AIDS DAY
12.1.09 | 6-8PM
please RSVP by 11.27.09
info at longviewgallery.com

In the mid- to late-1980s, while the medical world was grappling with how to combat the frightening and deadly new virus it discovered in 1984, admen like Jeff McElhaney were struggling with how to raise public awareness of the new dangers this microscopic and mysterious enemy presented. The show features 28 original pieces of propaganda-created mostly by ad hoc underground teams since established advertising agencies weren't quite ready to embrace the then-taboo issue on a corporate level-designed to sell everything from safe sex to HIV/AIDS support services. The exhibit represents a quarter century of ads for AIDS' sake and will be on display through the end of December.

WPA Art Auction Gala

Save the Date!
Washington Project for the Arts
Art Auction Gala

January 20, 2010
@ American University Museum
At the Katzen Arts Center

Call For Entries: 36 Studios – Part 1

Washington Project for the Arts announces 36 Studios – Part 1, a series of studio visits with Mera Rubell of the Rubell Family Collection.

The Rubell Family Collection is one of the leading collections of contemporary art in the world.  Started in 1964, soon after Don and Mera Rubell were married, the Rubell Family Collection operates as a non-profit organization based in Miami where it presents rotating, curated exhibitions and hosts a variety of educational and community outreach programs.

Mera Rubell will be one of eight esteemed curators selecting works for Cream, the WPA 2010 Art Auction Exhibition.  Building upon the popular Experimental Video Series at the Rubells’ Capitol Skyline Hotel, Rubell has determined to see the work of as many DC-area artists as possible and select up to twelve to be included in the WPA exhibition and auction.  Her visits to DC are typically 36 hours long, and she has devoted her next trip to this project.

For 36 Studios – Part 1, Mera Rubell and a team of curators and writers will conduct 36 studio visits over the course of 36 straight hours.  Each studio visit will last approximately 15-20 minutes and will take place starting at 5:00am on Saturday, December 12 and continuing until 5:00pm on Sunday, December 13.

Artists will apply to participate and will be chosen at random to have the opportunity to meet and present their work.  The work chosen will be included in WPA’s annual Art Auction Exhibition, January 30 through March 6, 2010 at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, culminating in the auction gala on March 6.  Artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of their artwork sold at the auction and the balance of proceeds benefits Washington Project for the Arts.

On Sunday, December 13 at 6:00 pm at the culmination of 36 Studios – Part 1, artists are invited to join Mera Rubell, WPA staff and friends, and other members of the art community at the Capitol Skyline Hotel lounge for an informal celebration (cash bar).

36 Studios emerged out of Mera Rubell’s personal desire to learn more about the DC art scene by engaging with local artists in their studios. This venture will serve as a model that the Rubell Family Collection hopes to activate for future projects.

Deadline for Submissions: Sunday, December 6, 2009 at midnight

Eligibility: Artists must live in the DC Metropolitan area (DC, MD, VA) and must be available for a studio visit at ANYTIME between 5:00 am on Saturday, December 12 and 5:00pm on Sunday, December 13. If you are selected, an exact day/time will be assigned to you.  We are sorry that we cannot accommodate specific time/date requests.

To Apply:
The full call can be found here: http://wpadc.org/events/calls.html

Send an email to: 36StudiosWPA@gmail.com with your name, studio address, website URL, resume, and phone number by Sunday, December 6, 2009 at midnight.  Please put “36 Studios” in the subject line.

Artists who apply by the deadline will have their names placed in a lottery. Winners will be randomly chosen and will be notified by December 10 of the time of the studio visit.

Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Launches New Registry of Fellowship Artists

Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF) announces the launch of a new, on-line registry of artist fellowship winners from Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia. The service, which is free to both artists and public users, features artist profiles, work samples across all disciplines, online exhibitions, and a technical assistance section. The Mid Atlantic Artist Registry is fully searchable allowing the public user to find vetted artists quickly and easily by state, discipline, or name.

Users have the opportunity to view video by dance, media, music and theatre artists; listen to audio from spoken word, media and music artists; read poetry, prose, plays, and other writings; and view a multitude of visual work samples from some of the finest artists in the mid-Atlantic region. Contact information for each artist allows users a quick click-through email for information on commissions, purchases, publishing, residency availability, and other contract/exhibition work.

The Registry is accessible through MAAF's primary site (www.midatlanticarts.org) and includes two primary sections: a searchable database of fellowship winners, and an exhibition/technical support section.

The searchable database features artist profiles including: contact information, web presence, discipline(s), biography, news, fellowship and other awards received, selected work, and selected projects.  The profiles also include visual/audio representations of artist work including images, video, audio, and PDF's of text for literary artists.

The exhibition/technical assistance section includes dynamic exhibitions hosted by guest curators who will work with artists' featured in the registry to create several exhibitions per year.  The exhibitions will feature all genres and not be limited to visual art forms.  John Massier, Visual Arts Curator at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY, is the inaugural guest curator.  The technical support section features links to information on subjects such as live/work space for artists, legal issues, and funding opportunities.

As Likely As Not:  Sculpture by Alex Bay and R. L. Croft (Emerson Gallery)
Curated by MPA Exhibitions Director Nancy Sausser
Both artists are object makers who began as painters, currently adept at bringing the world of their imagining into three-dimensional reality. Composed of a wide-ranging array of materials and employing many disparate techniques, the works share a sense of purposeful purposelessness and a no holds barred attitude.

R. L. Croft, Silo, mixed media

Hybrids of Tutela: New Works by Melissa Dickenson (Atrium Gallery)
Works made of acrylic paint and ink on cut paper and mounted on acrylic backing are a fantastical world inhabited by imaginary flora and fauna created within the confines of  flowing, meandering and intricate structures, wholly original and at once both sweet and slightly sinister.

McLean Art Society Juried Exhibition (Ramp Gallery)

Washington Spaces blog : Prime Real Estate Meets Fabulous Art

This Private Art and Cocktail party event by the Art Registy was on my list of places to go last thursday night, a marathon of openings. I made it to three out of four scheduled events. This was a highlight! Erin Mackay and Jill Lubar, co-owners of The Art Registry, put on a stunning display of art in a unique environment.

Two birds, one stone. At the intersection of two industries hit hard by the economic mess – fine art and real estate – lies a great innovation. Take an empty house on the market, fill it with art (and bubbly), open sesame, and wow everyone.

Laurel Lukaszewski at Project 4

a solo exhibition of new works by local ceramics artist, Laurel Lukaszewski.
November 6- December 18, 09
The conception of this body of work arises from the artist's interest in the Japanese phrase, "ichi-go ichi-e", which roughly translates to "one moment, one time" in English.

The simple and elegant individual porcelain forms that Lukaszewski creates for this exhibition become rich and expansive installations throughout the gallery.

Pulse Miami Contemporary Art Fair

PULSE Miami 2009 at The Ice Palace
Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 6, 2009

Entering its fifth season, PULSE Contemporary Art Fair will move to Miami's Ice Palace this December with an expanded presentation of international galleries and programming. The new venue provides PULSE with an enhanced platform for their signature programming series, including the launch of a new performance program featuring daily outdoor concerts. Held from Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 6, 2009, the fair will run concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach.

The Miami debut of PULSE Performance will feature daily performances and concerts by young emerging artists such as Maria Jose Arjona, who was recently invited to be part of a workshop with Marina Abramovic, and whose daily performances will be among the highlights of the new programming.  Notable musical talents in the outdoor concert and performance series include The Vivian Girls, The Blow, and Exene Cervenka.

Additionally, PULSE will present its signature program of large-scale sculptures and installations throughout the fair's exhibition halls and lawn, as well as the PULSE Play> video lounge curated by João Ribas, Curator of Exhibitions at the MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA.  Danny Baskin and Andy Schrock, featured in PULSE PRESENTS at ACADEMY 2009 hosted by Conner Contemporary Art, have also each been awarded space to present new projects at the fair.

Each year, one artist featured in IMPULSE, the section of the fair dedicated to solo artist presentations, is awarded a $2,500 cash prize.  This year's PULSE Prize will be awarded in honor of Adriaan van der Have, Founder and Director of Torch Gallery, who was an inspiring force in the art world for his dedication to the promotion of emerging artists.  The winner will be announced Friday, December 4, 2009 during the PULSE Party at PLUNGE at the Gansevoort South.

Food Glorious Food V Dramatic Dining

Presented by Zenith Community Arts Foundation ♦ Hosted by Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company
To Benefit the Capital Area Food Bank

Calendar Launch Celebration: Thursday, December 3, 6-10pm

Artworks on Display: December 3 – January 3, 2010

 Bill Mead, Squash Family

Washington, DC – November 2, 2009 – Now in its fifth year, the Food Glorious Food art show and associated 2010 calendar will be unveiled by the Zenith Community Arts Foundation (ZCAF)
@ Woolly Mammoth Theatre
Thursday, December 3, 6-10pm

with a Calendar Launch Celebration and Silent Auction to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2010. Emcee for the evening will be WUSA 9 News Anchor Andrea Roane.

Cooked up by ZCAF in 2005, Food Glorious Food’s menu of food, art and charity is a recipe for success that has raised more than $100,000 for the food bank in four years, while pleasing the palates of art patrons and foodies through a unique collaboration between artists and restaurants. Area businesses add spice to the mix by sponsoring the calendar and donating items for the auction. The overall project raises money through calendar sales, a percentage of proceeds from a related month-long food art exhibition and the Calendar Launch Celebration.

James Tormey, SUSPENDED ANIMATION, 26 x 22, oil on canvas

This year’s theme, Dramatic Dining, was inspired by ZCAF’s new partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, who also in its 30th year, shares the same commitment to community values and the arts as ZCAF. The new alliance, prompted by Food Glorious Food’s move from its former home on Seventh Street NW at Zenith Gallery, will bring a new audience of theatre goers to the show and event, and raise more money for the food bank to help feed the hungry.

Geoffrey Aldridge: Hole in the Wall

Transformer this Saturday, November 21

7th Annual DC Artist Solo Exhibition
Geoffrey Aldridge: Hole in the Wall

Geoffrey Aldridge, Yellow Brick Road detail

November 21 - December 26, 2009

ARTIST TALK: Saturday, November 21, 2009; 4pm
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, November 21, 2009; 5 - 8pm

Referencing cultural history and the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Geoffrey Aldridge: Hole in the Wall at Transformer will feature a series of art interventions within our 14th Street, NW project space. DC-based artist Geoffrey Aldridge utilizes video, sculpture, and spatial interventions to create metaphorical moments of reflection that position relationships between identity construction and gay rights activism. Associating memory, perception, and identity, this installation of works at Transformer creates moments of reflection on the continuing struggle of the gay community for recognition and acceptance.

Transformer began working with Geoffrey Aldridge in spring 2009, presenting his brick project as part of Transformer's participation in NO SOUL FOR SALE - A Festival Of Independents (June 24-28, 2009), hosted by X-initiative at the former Dia Center for the Arts in Chelsea, New York, NY. The brick project was an interactive work that explored the creative and intellectual process of planning, fabricating, and executing an artistic concept from beginning to an unknown outcome.

EXHIBITION HOURS: Wednesday - Saturday, 1-7pm & by appointment*

*Transformer will be open by appointment only November 25-28, and December 23-26, 2009.

Rodrick Freeman aka Rod-zilla the Blackademic has been a staple in the international spoken word scene for the last five years. Originally from California, his dynamic performances have graced stages from Sacramento to Sydney, Australia. Heralded as the "hip hop griot", Rod-zilla stuns crowds with his creative natural realism, an abundance of alliteration, and a delivery that is authentically rich and transcendent. A true representative of the Black Arts movement this Blackademic has made it his duty to kill black male stereotypes with his scholarly work, proving that the myth of the black intellectual is not a farce at all. Equipped with knowledge of self and African conviction, Mr. Freeman has set out to be in the vanguard as a Pan-Africanist. His prolific body of work details the need for economic freedom in urban communities, holistic healing and black accountability while not sparing venomous critiques on the powers that be.

HOME is on every THIRD Friday of the month at Hillyer Art Space.

Functionless Form, Functional Décor

November 20, 2009 -  January 16, 2010
Opening Friday, November 20th from 6pm-9pm.
@ School 33 Art Center

Featured Artists: M. Angelo Arnold, Shannon Donovan, Chiara Keeling, & Allison Reimus
Curated by Philippa P.B. Hughes with assistance from Elizabeth Ward

The works in this exhibit reconsider the questions of art as décor, and décor as art. These four artists consider their creative output and its relevance to space, aesthetic, and taste. They perceive and appreciate the prospective place in which their artwork will reside. Like the pop artists, they remove familiar from its context and isloate the objects to provide contemporary interpretations and definitions of fine art.

Philippa P.B. Hughes has established a reputation for creating inventive and collaborative environments in which people who would not normally have the opportunity to interact with each other or with contemporary art gather to experience art in alternative and stimulating ways. Philippa founded The Pink Line Project with a mission to (1) inform and inspire the emerging art collector, and (2) foster intellectual and artistic innovation fueled by the transformative power of art.

School 33 Art Center is dedicated to providing opportunities for artists through exhibitions, art classes, workshops, a Studio Artist Program, and special events. School 33 Art Center is a program of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, Inc., and is supported in part by grants from the Mayor and the City Council of Baltimore, Provident Bank, Corrigan Sports/The Under Armour Baltimore Marathon, the Maryland State Arts Council, and through private contributions to School 33 Art Center.

Image Project / Juried Photo and Video Exhibition

A national show of contemporary photography and video juried by acclaimed photographer Taryn Simon

November 20, 2009 – January 16, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, November 20, 6 – 9 pm

@ Arlington Arts Center

The roster for the AAC’s national juried show of photo and video work, IMAGE/PROJECT, was chosen by Taryn Simon, a Guggenheim fellow represented by Gagosian gallery in New York. From our pool of entries, Simon selected 17 different projects by 19 artists hailing from New York, LA, Chicago, and all points inbetween. The exhibition itself features three black box spaces for video projections and four galleries of photographs.

The show reflects the ways in which contemporary artists tend to approach photography and video. Many of the artists presented here use photography as either a means for documenting or presenting cross-disciplinary projects, or as a tool for inquiry into the way we perceive and live in the world.

Below is a list of the finalists: Morgan Ashcom (Free Union, VA) Leslie Awender (Topanga, CA) Jason Burch (Jersey City, NJ) Judith Connell (Falls Church, VA) Elizabeth Crisman (Baltimore, MD) David Hartwell and Josef Jacques (San Francisco, CA) Jason Havernaas (Brooklyn, NY) Linda Hesh (Alexandria, VA) Jaime Kennedy and Kelly Urquhart (Kent, OH) Alma Leiva (Miami, FL) Karen Ludlam (Brooklyn, NY) Jeroen Nelemans (Chicago, IL) Minou Norouzi (Los Angeles, CA) Nicholas O’Brien (Chicago, IL) Adam Pape (Chicago, IL) Laurie Rubin (Chicago, IL) Michael Wallace (Cleveland, OH)

In the Wyatt Gallery: New work by resident artists Evan Reed and Jill Romanoke. Reed builds large wooden sculptures that often resemble architectural models for larger buildings—some historical, some fantastic. For this show, Reed will offer large scale drawings and studies related to this work. Romanoke is known for double-sided drawings and prints executed on translucent paper that use elements from maps, texts, and biological systems.

The Empty Landscape - Doug Moulden
Small Worlds - Sharon Fishel and Nancy Sausser

Artist Talk - Saturday November 21, 5 - 6 pm
Reception - Saturday November 21, 6 - 7:30 pm

In The Empty Landscape, Doug Moulden exhibits his fine sensitivity to the natural world through large-scale acrylic on panel paintings. On long walks through the woods and fields near his Frederick, Maryland home, Moulden gathers imagery via photography and memory. Back in his studio, using a process that relies as much on sculpture as it does on painting, Moulden warps and shapes plywood panels and covers them with a dense network of paint applied through syringes.  Sometimes he carves into the surface, digging down through the physical history of his paint to reveal the density of landscape. Despite this laborious process, each painting vibrates rhythmically, evoking a world out of time. Reminiscent of Seurat’s pointillist work, Moulden’s paintings allude to a larger, more complex narrative than their surface serenity might imply. What appears to be a quiet countryside at first glance transforms over time into a more intricate story.

Nancy Sausser, A Small View In, 12” x 12” x 3”, ceramic, 2009

In Small Worlds, Sharon Fishel and Nancy Sausser juxtapose their divergent works to explore similar concerns. Both artists examine and celebrate the natural world but through different materials, techniques, and approaches. They explain that, “Using the landscape as a gateway, we create small worlds that bracket or freeze frame small moments or events in time as a way of looking at and seeing the world with greater clarity.” Fishel is fascinated with plants. On strolls through her garden she watches the variety of ways in which plants move – spiraling, exploding, falling, opening, and closing.  In contrast to Fishel’s process of expanding infinitesimal floral activity, Nancy Sausser encapsulates grand geologic events within her small-scale, relief sculptures.

A video game competition will be held in the gallery at 6:30pm before the panel discussion. Come test your skills!

Kenny George crosses the line from fine art to mainstream consumerism, to transform and commodify his work and himself into objects from popular culture. The focal point of Pacguy, part of FotoWeek DC, will be a cocktail-style arcade game that borrows its format from the ubiquitous Pacman game.  George uses an image of himself to replace the Pacman icon and to merchandize a fictionalized caricature throughout the exhibition. In addition to the video game, which visitors will be invited to play, Pacguy will feature lenticular flip animations, a retrofitted slot machine and a computerized pogo stick.

Wednesday, November 18, 7-9pm

Join the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities for Art Salon: Poetry In Motion.

This month explores the worlds of poetry and motion graphics. Poetry - strict or free flowing, breathing words through rhythm and meter, has the power to make us laugh, cry or start a revolution. On November 18th, four talented poets will present their works against a backdrop created through motion graphics. Poetry; one of our most ancient forms of communication, and motion graphics; one of our youngest, join together at our next Art Salon to have a conversation.

Art Salon is modeled after the Paris salons of the late 19th century to inspire and provoke the minds of the creative community, featuring poets Kyle Dargan, Tala Abu Rahmeh, Abdul Ali and Sami Miranda & graphic art courtesy of the Motion Graphics Festival '09.

Rufino Tamayo and the Mixografía® Years (1974-1990): A Cross Border Journey

Saturday, October 3, 2009 - Sunday, February 14, 2010

,
Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Sunday; 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Meridian International Center, together with the MIXOGRAFÍA® workshop and Landau Traveling Exhibitions in Los Angeles, will display a stunning exhibition of 39 signed prints by renowned Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991).

Orphaned at a young age, Tamayo relocated to Mexico City in the early twentieth century and attended the National Academy of Fine Arts. By 1926 he was presenting solo exhibitions in Mexico City and New York and increasingly gained acclaim for his work. In a successful and peripatetic career, this renowned artist lived in the United States and France for many years before returning to Oaxaca, Mexico. There, he founded a museum and continued to produce innovative artworks with distinctly Mexican qualities.

In the early 1970s, Tamayo was invited by Luis and Lea Remba to collaborate as a printmaker at their workshop in Mexico City. He expressed interest, but was eager to identify new approaches to the print medium – especially techniques that would yield works with increased volume and texture. This challenge resulted in Luis Remba inventing a unique printing technique later known as “Mixografía®”.

Rufino Tamayo was the first artist to work with this printing process and created 67 editions over a seventeen year period prior to his death. These workshop editions represent one-fifth of his total printmaking output during his lifetime and are a fascinating excursus into the extraordinary plasticity of paper. Since Tamayo’s work with the Remba family, “MIXOGRAFÍA®” has influenced artists in the United States and elsewhere and the studio, later transferred from Mexico City to Los Angeles, continues to attract those who wish to expand the limits of this two-dimensional medium.
Artworks included in this exhibition represent a cross-section of the exciting collaboration between a renowned artist and master printmakers. It serves as an excellent example of cross-border relations and the ways in which cultural endeavors between the United States and Mexico have grown and flourished.

PHILLIPS COLLECTION DEBUTS INTERSECTIONS, A NEW CONTEMPORARY ART SERIES

Intersections Opening—Artists Tayo Heuser, Barbara Liotta, and Jennifer Wen Ma
Discussion: Nov. 19, 6 p.m.  by donation

Heuser, Liotta, and Wen Ma share the inspiration behind their site-specific works with Vesela Sretenovic, Phillips curator of modern and contemporary art.  by donation

Brain Storm is presented in collaboration with Transformer gallery and Shigeko Bork Mu Project, in conjunction with Ink Storm, an exhibition curated by Ma at Transformer.

Heuser is best known for her large-scale, pen-and-ink drawings on highly polished and shimmering paper, the result of coating and burnishing according to an old Arabic tradition.

Artwork by Liotta is on display in a solo show at D.C.’s Reyes + Davis gallery, from Oct. 23 to Nov. 27, 2009.

Intersections invites artists to respond to artwork and spaces in the museum with projects of their own, revealing relationships between modern and contemporary art. Many Intersections projects riff on the intimate nature of the museum’s architecture, engaging spaces not typically considered exhibition areas, such as the museum’s stairwell, courtyard, and walkways between buildings, among others. (this is not that Café, a project by dBfoundation, is currently underway in the museum’s café.) By activating these unconventional spaces, Intersections challenges visitors’ expectations of how and where they experience art. These unexpected encounters create new relationships, with surprises of their own.

“Intersections invites the living artist to engage creatively with the rich modernist collection at The Phillips Collection. Collaborating with curator, Vesela Sretenovic, the artists respond to specific works of art as well as the idiosyncratic spaces of our intimate galleries,” says Dorothy Kosinski, director of The Phillips Collection. “Duncan Phillips was thrilled by contemporary art, and we are excited to embrace this aspect of the institution’s mission and personality.”
