Joan Belmar’s art alternates between paintings on paper to structured acrylic paintings using Mylar and acetate. In his structured paintings, Belmar adheres closely arranged perpendicular strips of Mylar to a back surface and then places a parallel translucent painting on the front of the art. By keeping the front painting simple and in focus, the Mylar strips create optical illusions of blurring the image when viewed from the side instead of the clean uninterrupted view straight on. These optical illusions mirror Belmar’s thoughts. The artist compares his work to the physical stability we recognize in our lives which can easily become blurred or disrupted by an emotion which is not stable, thereby temporarily altering our reality.

Cameron Petke spent a year producing a comprehensive exploration of the aesthetic and acoustical variables involved in making clear-ringing contemporary ceramic bells. Influenced by the classical beauty of marble sculpture, Petke fashions his bells with porcelain clay which is finely sanded and left unglazed to mimic the surface quality of polished stone. Similar to the outer-inner symbolism portrayed in Joan Belmar’s structural paintings, Cameron Petke uses the bell as an artistic object that retains the solidity of its form as it rings with the purity of an ephemeral vibration.

Marie Ringwald returns with new layered wood and metal constructions through which she continues to exercise her interest in store front and warehouse facades. As she simplifies various geometric compositions and carefully balances color, texture and reflective light, Ringwald produces elegant pieces engaging us through her direct, honest responses to architecture and design. The exhibit will feature “Patchwork Warehouse in Black and Silver” an impressive example of carefully edited work, which results in a fine minimal palette using steel, wood and tar paper.

Gallery Neptune presents its third social/art event of 2010: LANGWIDGE

Gallery Neptune is pleased to present the third in its series of social/art evenings, LANGWIDGE. The evening event will feature our current exhibition of landscapes and seascapes by Washington, DC artist Freya Grand. Participants will be asked to wander through the exhibit while listening to original scores inspired by the paintings.

They will carry clip boards to write any words (actual or fabricated) that come to them as they take in our micro musical and visual cultural experience. The words will be collected into one box. Charles Jensen, director of The Writer’s Center, along with poet Reb Livingston will kick off a dada poetry reading for the final hour of LANGWIDGE. Dada inspired poetry is created by randomly choosing words from prewritten slips of paper and through the order of that selection a poem is created.
Participants will then have a chance to volunteer to read additional poems.

Freya Grand paints the land and the sea like nature’s true confidant. Her paintings rush towards us with immense power portraying earth’s forms whether solid or liquid. Even the ghosts of her subjects in the distance are mighty in their placement, like veiled sentries.  Although we are immediately presented with imagery large and strong, the artist takes great care to have us investigate her work slowly and at close range  where we examine the spray of water, the arid crumble of rocky terrain, mist as myst and other phenomenon that evaporate and disappear into the unknown.

In the month of March a collection of Freya Grand’s stunning landscapes and seascapes of Ireland, the Galapagos Islands, Peru and Iceland will undoubtedly stir each guest as the walls of Neptune hold her memories of the enigmatic earth.

An intriguing exhibition of metal and fiber graces Gallery Neptune this fall with the outstanding artwork of Joyce Zipperer and Rania Hassan. Both artists excel in their mediums and both use their art to define communities that are personal to each of them. Joyce Zipperer has been producing art in the Washington, DC area for more than twenty years and fashion has played a major role which informs her work. Her history of women’s undergarments has been expressed through hand crocheted metal wire or sheet metal sculptures and covers everything from corsets to bloomers to brassieres and “Days of the Week” underwear. Woman’s accessories have also made their way into Zipperer’s portfolio. In 2007 she was featured in Neptune’s “Brand New Talk Collection” with oversized jewelry, hats, gloves and high heeled shoes in metal, fabric and wood. In the gallery’s current exhibit, she returns with her focus strictly on high heels: “Throughout history, women have been influenced by trends in fashion, often discounting comfort and health issues. Some of my work addresses issues concerning bound torsos and cramped feet in shoes of exaggerated styles.” Acknowledging its allure, Zipperer agrees that fashion design sometimes weakens our sensibilities; a difficult thing to reckon with when trendy is hip and fun. In 2003 Joyce Zipperer was inducted into the National Association of Women Artists in New York, for sculpture.

Rania Hassan is an emerging artist who has been steadily producing art from her Washington, DC studio for the past ten years. Recently named an outstanding artist in the field of fiber by the James Renwick Alliance, Hassan has combined her painting and knitting skills to create a unique presentation of art that honors the community of knitters that share her passion and communicate with her regularly through her blog www.goshdarnknit.com. Hassan also views her art as a symbol of universal connectedness: “I am fascinated by the connections we find in our everyday experiences: from the isolation of communities on the subway, to the solitary experience of introspection, to the feelings of deep communion. How do we think of our place in this world? How do we fit in it?”
