Reston, VA: Greater Reston Arts Center begins its new season with JOURNEY, Freya Grand’s expansive exhibition of mystical landscape paintings. With lush brushwork and an uncanny sense of the universal in nature, Grand gives traditional landscape painting a contemporary, romantic interpretation where natural forces and features become catalysts for unlocking primordial memory.

The artist describes her paintings as “points of departure inward” rather than specific destinations. Built upon recollected feelings, travel sketches, notes, and photographs from actual journeys, her paintings develop into poetic meditations on the earth’s vastness. Each canvas offers a pathway into the void through ominous boulders, receding tides, and mountain passes. Through her paintings, Grand leads us on a rigorous tour of nature’s “relentless beauty,” sharing her pleasure in its familiar, iconic forms and her fears of its starkness and immensity.

As in the Romantic paintings of the nineteenth century, JOURNEY, reminds us that human intrusions into the natural world can have unwanted consequences. Scenes such as “Rock at Low Tide” and “Sea” are visionary depictions of the shoreline but they also evoke what is lost when environmental disaster strikes. By illuminating the primal forces in nature, Grand’s work carries a dual message of darkness and hope through its deep reverence for wildness, both in nature and humankind.

Educated at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Grand has lived and worked in Washington, DC for twenty years. Most recently, she has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Neptune in Bethesda, MD; Gallery 211 in Baltimore, MD; The Arts Club of Washington, DC; and the Judy Saslow Gallery in Chicago, IL. Her work is in numerous collections including the District of Columbia Arts Commission; the US Trust Company in New York, NY; and the Charles E. Smith Company in Arlington, VA.

Gallery Neptune is pleased to present the third in its series of social/art evenings, LANGWIDGE. The evening event will feature our current exhibition of landscapes and seascapes by Washington, DC artist Freya Grand. Participants will be asked to wander through the exhibit while listening to original scores inspired by the paintings.

They will carry clip boards to write any words (actual or fabricated) that come to them as they take in our micro musical and visual cultural experience. The words will be collected into one box. Charles Jensen, director of The Writer’s Center, along with poet Reb Livingston will kick off a dada poetry reading for the final hour of LANGWIDGE. Dada inspired poetry is created by randomly choosing words from prewritten slips of paper and through the order of that selection a poem is created.
Participants will then have a chance to volunteer to read additional poems.

Greater Reston Arts Center presents an all-media, juried exhibition featuring sixteen artists selected by Dale Lanzone, president of International Public Art Marlborough one of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries. The exhibition celebrates the art center’s 35 year commitment to enriching community life by promoting involvement and excellence in contemporary visual arts.

The thirty-two works on exhibit showcase the broad ranging inquiry of today’s artists. Traditional media, including finely crafted oil and acrylic paintings, street photography, and meticulous drawings, share the gallery with delicate twig sculptures and paintings made with ash, clay, and tree resin. In discussing the works in FARAWAY NEARBY, Mr. Lanzone has said, “The works selected are of national and international origin representing a broad range of cultural backgrounds and artistic interests – there is no ‘school of’ represented here; we simply have individual artists expressing their varied visions and range of talents – if there was a school of the era of 2009, it would be the school of ‘there is no school.”

“China Revisited”, a mixed media painting by Brenda Belfield is emblematic of the artist’s rich, multi-layered relationship with the arts center. Belfield has been associated with GRACE since its beginning in 1974 and says, “I was one of the founders and created the name The Greater Reston Arts Center as I knew that someday, it would be much more than a local art center.”
Another artist familiar to GRACE audiences because of her long history of exhibiting in the gallery and at the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival is Connie M. Slack. Her painting, “In Search of Resolution,” is a robust abstraction teetering on the edge of dissolution, giving meaning to its title.

“Some of my earliest memories are of walking from my house to Lake Anne Plaza to see the art hanging in GRACE gallery”, reveals Monica B. Stroik who was included in “Imprint: The Art and Artists of a New Town”, GRACE’s inaugural exhibition after its move to Market Street. Stroick shares Belfield’s and Slack’s bold approach to painting and says that, “GRACE has been one of those constants in my life as I have grown and developed as an artist. I feel a profound connection to it as a physical place and as a supporter of the visual arts.”

Artists new to GRACE continue the tradition of confident abstraction seen in Slack, Belfield, and Stroik. First time exhibitor Melanie Newlon’s “Convergence” and “Deep Earth” are color-saturated digital paintings offering long, satisfying views into imaginary vistas. Newlon states, “My work expresses my experience of “thin spaces” – places where the sacred and the mundane overlap.”

Nature and landscape as sacred, mythic space inform the work of several other artists in the exhibition. Freya Grand, who will have a solo exhibition at GRACE in the fall of 2010, paints large-scale, mysterious scenes that allude to a secret, inner life. Shinji Turner-Yamamoto who has an on-going, long-term project with the arts center, “Sleeping Tree,” will exhibit three mixed media works on panel. He describes his work as a search for the universal connections between mankind and nature. William T. Zuk, who employs a repetitive, automatic process, offers the following insight into his work on canvas, “The pen and ink marks together with the cubist nature of the work produces a suggestion of an unpredictable and faraway landscape where the angular motif infers a frozen structure of ice and land.”

While Grand’s, Turner-Yamamoto’s, and Zuk’s work evoke the mystical faraway, Michael J. Ohgren’s “Choices” evokes both the nearby and faraway. His meticulously crafted eight-foot wooden sculpture, a drawer filled with plaid shirts, takes an everyday dilemma, “What to wear?” and turns it into a meditation on the endless, monotony of life’s mindless decisions. A Vienna resident and recent MFA graduate, Ohgren is exhibiting his work at GRACE for the first time.

Imagining Ireland: Sky, Land, Sea, an exhibition of landscape painting sponsored by the Embassy of Ireland, will feature the work of three well known painters, two from Ireland and one from the US.

The exhibit opens on Friday, October 3, 2008 at the Arts Club of Washington, which is the historic James Monroe House in Washington, DC.

Irish painters John Kirwan and Eugene Conway, from the Molesworth Gallery in Dublin, along with Washington DC painter Freya Grand, will mount a large exhibition of work that illuminates the rocky coasts, the dramatic skies and the damp, silent country roads of this beautiful country. All of the artists will be present at the opening reception.

WPA's Gala Event

"the WPA's much-anticipated gala on Friday, March 7, at the Katzen Arts Center is set to be one of the city's swankest affairs. Heralded as the most cutting-edge art auction in town, the event features a curatorial cadre hailing from Manhattan to Richmond. Of those picking the pieces, Marc and Sara Schiller of the renowned Wooster Collective will bring their favorite street artists' work and the National Gallery of Art's Sarah Kennel will highlight under-the radar photographers.

The auction will not only put new artists in front of the area's leading collectors, it will also raise much-needed funds for the new microgallery space and the organization's operations costs. "Our benefactors are now founding supporters again," says [Kim} Ward. "There's such a new different excitement, and they get to help decide where it's all going to go."

Gallery 211 presents the exhibit Landscapes featuring the oil paintings of Washington, DC painter Freya Grand. Ms. Grand's large scale landscapes are evocative in their otherworldly theme, and yet they are simultaneously contemporary. These works illuminate the mutability of the passage of time within a particular space. The images are drawn from places as diverse as the Andes and coastal Ireland, and they reflect Grand's love of the mysterious beauty of the natural world.

As a counterpoint to the large works, Ms. Grand will also be showing a series of miniatures: very tiny oil paintings on mylar. These intimate studies of landscape painting invite close inspection, as if one is peering through a keyhole at a world on the other side.

A catalogue of the show will be available at Gallery 211, with an introductory essay by Jack Rasmussen, Director of the Katzen Art Museum at American University in Washington, DC.
