Collectors’ panel and gallery tour part of MPA’s inaugural
MPA Inspires: A Weekend of Collecting and Connecting event

McLean, VA: McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) will host an Art Insights Panel Discussion and Alumni Art Exhibition Showcase on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 2-5pm. Part of MPA’s inaugural MPA Inspires: A Weekend of Collecting and Connecting celebration, the event will take place at MPA Downtown, the organization’s hoped-for new supplemental space located at 6910 Fleetwood Road in McLean, VA. The Alumni Art Exhibition Showcase will feature work by more than 60 MPA alumni artists.

“The 61 outstanding artists featured in the MPA Inspires Weekend have donated their works in support of the development of a new MPA Art and Education Center,” explained Helen Frederick, member of the MPA Board of Directors and member of the MPA Art and Education Curatorial Host Committee. “These dynamic artists are making this generous donation because they appreciate what MPA has done for them, and they want to support MPA as it plans to expand and offer more opportunities for the art community.”

Presented by The Mather, the Art Insights event will begin with a panel discussion featuring collectors Michael Abrams and Sandra Stewart, art advocate Nancy Hirshbein, and Eric Key, Arts Program Director at the University of Maryland University College.

A ”Meet the Artists” session and gallery tour will follow the panel discussion. Guests will enjoy a unique opportunity to connect with the alumni artists about their work, providing a firsthand glimpse into the inspiration that fuels their artistic expressions. The event will conclude with a reception.

The Art Insights Panel Discussion and Alumni Art Exhibition is part of MPA’s inaugural MPA Inspires: A Weekend of Collecting and Connecting event. In addition to Saturday’s discussion and showcase, the weekend will feature an Art + Soul | Jazz Brunch on Sunday, November 19 from 11:30am until 2:30pm.

The Art + Soul portion of the weekend will also include a highly anticipated Collectors’ Drawing featuring 60 artworks generously contributed by generations of alumni artists who comprise MPA’s artistic legacy.

All artists featured in MPA Inspires: A Weekend of Collecting and Connecting have donated their works in support of the development of a new MPA Art and Education Center. A preview of donated artwork is available on the MPA website.

Abundance: Works by Mei Mei Chang, Amy Boone McCreesh,

This curated exhibition features four artists whose inclusive approaches combine ideas and materials in a swirling, exuberant, “more is more” manner to create works that unabashedly claim and own their space. Using both traditional and scavenged components, these works flourish both on and off the wall as they move into a through space with an elegant, imaginative, experimental and experiential energy. 

Above the Horizon: Works by Nikki Brugnoli | Atrium Gallery

These abstracted and expressionistic drawings and prints center on a post-industrial, post-agricultural landscape as they explore memory and experience, vastness and the precision of proximity. Light, abstraction, transparency and glowing color come together to create works that offer a meditation on safety, separation and the deep familiarity of place. Called to return again and again to the image of an abandoned silo, Brugoli creates an impactful visual symbol imbued with a longing for the past, the comport of the present, and the endless adventure of imagination.

In Process: Photographs by Ajay Malghan | Ramp Gallery

These large-scale, evocative, and innovative photographs on display by Baltimore artist Ajay Malghan incorporate time as a formative element. Inventive in both conception and process, the works gather light, form and space in both calm and energetic compositions that transport the viewer into the atmosphere of elsewhere. Color glows and radiates, proposing mood and eliciting response, creating a new and intriguing landscape in which to experience and enter the day.

Curated by painter and Corcoran College of Art + Design Professor Joey P. Mánlapaz, this exhibit features work by three painters who draw on the city as subject matter to produce paintings executed in a photorealist style. Says Mánlapaz, “As a painter who focuses on Washington, D.C. cityscape, I sought fellow contemporary artists who paint cityscapes in the same style. Denis Peterson of New York and Glenn M. Moreton of Maryland both exemplify cityscape photorealism at its best. The precision, color and exactitude they use in representing their respective cities are rich in technique and composition.”

Private Art Collection Will Be Auctioned to Benefit MPA

Private Art Collection Will Be Auctioned to Benefit MPA
Sunday, September 12, 4 – 6 pm

McLean Project for the Arts is the honored recipient of the art collection of John Deardourff, political consultant and late husband of recently retired Madiera Head of School, Dr. Elisabeth Griffith.  This wonderful collection of paintings, ceramics and sculpture has been donated to MPA to auction as a fundraiser.

Plan on spending an exciting Sunday afternoon, September 12, 4 – 6 pm, bidding on a piece (or more!) from this collection at a silent auction.  The forty-seven pieces of art will be on display at a private home in McLean and the bidding will be fun with a wide range of minimum bids.

There are quite a few truly outstanding pieces, including three encaustic paintings by Robin Rose, three ceramic pieces by Otto Heino, and six clay sculptures by Jeff Shapiro. Sculptures include cast glass by Rick Beck, a bronze and copper maquette by Jon Havener and a pink granite sculpture by Jesus Moroles.  In addition there are paintings both large and small by artists such as Shahla Arbabi, Willy Heeks and Leon Berkowitz. This is a very fine collection and the entire proceeds from purchases benefit MPA.

If you would like to take a Sneak Peek and have a chance to “Buy It Now”, there will be an opportunity to stop by on Friday, September 10 from 6 – 8 pm. 

Reservations are a must.  Your name must be on the list at the door to attend the Sneak Peek and/or Silent Auction.  You will get the address when you RSVP.  MPA will take checks, Master Card and Visa.

MPAartfest Call for Entries

McLean Central Park will reverberate with the sights and sounds of art and music on Sunday, October 3rd at the 4th annual MPAartfest. Last year’s event drew 6,000 art and music devotees.

Visual artists from the mid-Atlantic region are invited to submit images of their work for the 4th annual juried MPAartfest to be held on Sunday October 3, 2010.   

The submission deadline is June 1, 2010.

Artisan jeweler JJ Singh will discuss her inspirations, design process, current collections and her recently launched "Rethink - Redesign" program. Working with clients' outdated, broken, or sentimental jewelry, JJ redesigns unwearable individual pieces into one-of-a-kind statement necklaces that have a real emotional significance. At the end of the presentation she will do a real time "re-design" demonstration. JJ's collections are available at fine jewelry stores and have been featured in Lucky, Cosmopolitan, Modern Jeweler, Good Housekeeping, Essence, and National Jeweler to name a few.

Works made of acrylic paint and ink on cut paper and mounted on acrylic backing are a fantastical world inhabited by imaginary flora and fauna created within the confines of  flowing, meandering and intricate structures, wholly original and at once both sweet and slightly sinister.

To Tell the Tale: Works by Allegra Marquart, Michael Janis and Tom Baker
These three artists make art that dabbles in storytelling and takes the viewer on a journey into the mind of the maker. Marquart mines the fairy tale for both content and imagery. Janis leads a guided tour of the interpretations and impressions he finds in the Tarot fortune telling system. Baker opens the door to both his conscious and unconscious thoughts as they take the form of unlikely images ranging from kitchen mixers to rockets. Executed in both glass and various print media, these works engage the viewer in an imaginative attempt at interpretation.

Uncharted Sky: Sculpture by Novie Trump
Atrium Gallery
These sculptures by Northern Virginia artist Novie Trump depict books, reliquaries, houses, boats, bones and birds, and draw on her training in classical archeology and interest in ancient myths and tales. Trump creates works from clay that possess the warm and worn patina of classical antiquity, while exploring timeless themes such as love, fear, death, courage and transformation.

Ramp Gallery
Longtime MPA/Corcoran teacher and artist Marise Riddell exhibits abstract paintings exploring order and chaos. Using layers and visual transparency, these works are influenced by time spent in the American Southwest among Native American cultures, and by the customs, colors and spiritual beliefs that permeate that unique environment.
