Hillyer Open Mic Events occur on the third Friday of every month and feature a stunning array of the District's poetic talent. Feature poets specialize in a variety of styles and take the audience for a personal journey into their work. Host Fred Joiner delves even deeper in his post-performance interview with feature performers, engaging them to illuminate their personal histories, influences, and perspectives to encourage heightened discourse and to somewhat unveil the mystery behind the words.
 
Kriss Mincey is a songwriter who aspires to write classics that generations to come will experience and value. She hails from Baltimore, and is a third-year Public Relations/English double major at the University of Maryland. She started singing in her high school choir and began writing only a year ago. In this short time, she has already recorded and written for artists such as Novacayne, Johnny Graham and E the Poet Emcee.
In this month's feature performance, Kriss will respond to the current exhibition, imMigration.  This exhibition examines the many facets of migration and immigration from the perspective of migrants and immigrants, their families, and the cultures they have either entered or left behind.

 Come enjoy Kriss' performance, the open mic session and discussion to follow! Whether you prefer to sit back and listen, or to help expand the stimulating dialogue, you are welcome to take part in this open forum event!

Party Crashers mashes up comic art and contemporary gallery culture and features artists who pass back and forth between the two worlds. The two sister exhibitions, curated by Jeffrey Cudlin, Arlington Arts Center's  Director of Exhibitions, and Cynthia Connolly, Artisphere's Curator and Director of Visual Arts, feature different types of work:  Connolly's show presents fine artists who mimic the appearance of comic art;  Cudlin's show at the AAC contains  Alternative comic artists who also show their original pages and drawings in art galleries, Fine artists and comic artists working side by side on a national curated project, and Fine and comic artists creating avant-garde, purely abstract sequential art without words or recognizable imagery.

Now in its sixth year, the Food Glorious Food art show and associated 2011 Calendar will be unveiled by the Zenith Community Arts Foundation (ZCAF) at Chevy Chase Pavilion on Wednesday, December 1 at a Calendar Launch Celebration & Silent Auction on the Terrace Level at Embassy Suites Hotel, from 6:30-9:30pm. This year’s theme, Sustainable & Scrumptious, was selected to create greater awareness of the environment and promote healthy, sustainable dining. Proceeds will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank, and WUSA 9 News Anchor Andrea Roane will serve as the evening’s emcee.

Food Glorious Food VI is chaired by Kerry L. R. Bedard and Sharon Leiser, and the 2011 Calendar is dedicated to the recently departed Liesel Flashenberg, founder of Through the Kitchen Door and a long-time Food Glorious Food chef.
 
Cooked up by ZCAF in 2005, Food Glorious Food’s menu of food, art and charity is a recipe for success that has raised more than $115,000 for the food bank in five years, while pleasing the palates of art patrons and foodies through a unique collaboration between artists and restaurants. Area businesses add spice to the mix by sponsoring the calendar and donating items for the auction. The overall project raises money through calendar sales, a percentage of proceeds from a related month-long food art exhibition and the Calendar Launch & Silent Auction.

Weaving Diversity. Textiles from Oaxaca

On November 20 the Mexican Cultural Institute will open its gallery spaces to an extraordinary exhibition of textiles from the Textile Museum of Oaxaca. Representing four important collections, the elaborate pieces on display  will showcase  historical indigenous attire worn throughout the late 19^th and 20^th centuries, as well as creations that feature unique weaving techniques and original textures. This exhibition is the result of decades of travel, discovery and collecting on the part of ardent proponents of the Mexican textile and popular art tradition.

The Fisher Gallery presents an exhibition of large format, black and white photographs by Arlington, VA based photographer Andrew Zimmermann.

The artist uses an 8 x 10 camera and traditional darkroom processes to reveal the stark abstract qualities of landscape. This series of images captures in photography what far Eastern artists have expressed through poetry and ink painting for centuries: the character of blankness. In most photographs, texture and detail form the image of the photographer’s subject. Here, negative space is as important as positive; absence and emptiness define the style and mood of these images.

Andrew Zimmermann lives and works in Arlington, Virginia. His work has been influenced not only by photographers, but also by old masters such as Titian and Rembrandt, and by Chinese ink painters Dong Qichang and Bada Shanren.

WASHINGTON, DC – Flashpoint Gallery announces Unreleased, Heather Bursch's first exhibition in Washington, DC. The exhibition consists of a single-channel video installation comprised of a grid of tiny videos, each animated by the artist’s hand. A segment of Martin Scorcese’s 1983 film King of Comedy is quoted, altered, looped and projected onto a large theatrical flat. Shifts between individual and crowd, adulation and ridicule are continually looped in a work that considers relationships between culture, technology and subjectivity in a digital age.

Bursch’s installation draws upon editing, quotation and staging techniques to compare moments in popular media culture to the presupposed social attitudes that underlie and inform them. The structure of her work reflects how, in our present digital landscape, an individual may occupy several roles simultaneously including performer, viewer, producer, consumer of media and member of the general public or audience.

Each fall, Flashpoint, a Cultural Development Corporation (CuDC) project, distributes Requests for Proposals for its programs. Artists interested in exhibiting their work at the Flashpoint Gallery in the 2011–12 season can download the RFP. The RFP includes information about the program, guidelines and an application form. The deadline for the Gallery RFP is December 1, 2010.

For the second year in a row, CuDC is partnering with The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region to make grants to artists participating in its programs, including the Flashpoint Gallery program. For the 2011–12 season, CuDC will award up to $10,000 to Flashpoint Gallery participants. Each artist/project selected for funding will be awarded up to $2,500.

An Exploration of Pop Culture in Postwar America

New York painter Deborah Kass will speak about her work and how it explores the intersection of pop culture and art history during the Contemporary Museum’s New Art Dialogue Series lectureon Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 7 p.m. The lecture will be held at the Walters Art Museum’s Graham Auditorium.

Ms. Kass uses her art to explore cultural identity and often visits her changing role as a Jewish woman molded by pop culture. Her work appropriates icons and influences ranging from Andy Warhol to Barbara Streisand, text and lyrics from Broadway shows, and popular culture influences to explore the relationship between low culture and high art.

Kass was a participating artist in the Contemporary Museum’s 1997 exhibition Too Jewish? Challenging Traditional Identities.

Following the lecture, a reception hosted by the museum’s New Group will be held at the Contemporary Museum.

Admission to the lecture is $10 for the general public, $5 for students, and free for members of the Contemporary Museum and Walters Art Museum. Tickets will be available at the door.

Facing History and Ourselves Seeks Local Portraits of Courage for Nationally Acclaimed Exhibition Coming to Washington in January 2011

Facing History and Ourselves is seeking nominations of Washington-area individuals and groups who have chosen to take a positive stand and act on behalf of others, to be featured in its multimedia exhibition, Choosing to Participate, which will be in Washington D.C.,January 17 - June 17, 2011.

Approximately 25 nominees will be selected for Upstanders: Portraits of Courage, a component of Facing History and Ourselves: Choosing to Participate exhibition that has been nationally recognized for encouraging hundreds of thousands of people of all ages to consider the consequences of their everyday choices. Those chosen as Upstanders will have their story and professional photograph displayed during the exhibition’s five-month stay at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. They will be seen by thousands of visitors and serve as a reminder that ordinary people are capable of making decisions, large and small, that create positive change in our world.

To nominate an Upstander, metropolitan Washingtonians are encouraged to describe in 300 words or less how their candidate has or is making a difference in the Washington area community or around the world, and then submit a nomination by the extended deadline of November 15.

Artist Opportunity / City Project Decks of cards

Entry Deadline: November 15, 2010

Art in Hand™ is bringing City Project Decks of cards to Washington, DC.

The Washington, DC Project will be a deck of fully functional playing cards where each individual card in the deck (plus 2 jokers) is rendered in the typical style of the contributing artist. The project will create widespread exposure for participating artists while producing a unique, entertaining, functional and green product for the city of Washington, DC.

Art in Hand™ is seeking artists of 2-dimensional art in any style or medium and from as many different neighborhoods and districts within Washington, DC area as possible.

Accepted artists will be assigned one card from the deck and asked to produce an original piece of work that clearly represents their designated card, that represents some aspect (be it overt or subtle) of Washington, DC and that is created in their own unique style.

There will be no fee for participation but accepted artists will be asked to sign a letter of commitment, a confidentiality agreement and a ‘right to reproduce’ agreement as well as submit a high res TIFF of the image in exchange for a one-time royalty payment in product. Artists are free to keep their original image.

Interested artists should submit an email before November 15th, 2010 to info@artinhandcards.com, include a short bio and a link to a website where their work can be easily viewed or 2-3 sample image files representative of their work. Please include the title: Washington, DC Project Artist in the subject line of your email.

If you are accepted to the project, we will contact you after November 22nd, 2010 and send you an information package that should answer all your questions.
