Decoy Closing

Close out the run of DECOY's Memento Mori in true Fridge style. Saturday, October 10, 2009

This is your final chance to check out DECOY's premiere solo show, which has been heralded by numerous publications (such as The Washington Post, City Paper, Thrillist, Brightest Young Things). Exploring the religious imagery that has been a lifelong obsession for the artist, the all-new work reminds us all to make the most of the one life we are each given.

The artists’ ability to tap into and interpret the fears, desires, and love we all experience is clearly expressed in this group of large-scale paintings.

There will be live music by special guests, Andy Matchett & The Monorail.

This event is free.

Doors open at 8 p.m. Set begins at 9 p.m.

Kennedy Center Enlists Art Groups for Education

Kennedy Center Enlists Art Groups for Education- Artdaily.org

WASHINGTON, AP.-
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is starting a new program that could reinvent arts education for schools struggling with budget cuts and fewer art teachers, organizers said Friday.

The pilot "Any Given Child" project announced Friday for schools in Sacramento, Calif., could be expanded to as many as three cities each year, the center said. Under the strategy, the Kennedy Center will link local arts groups with schools to help teach students in grades K-8.

The groups will draft long-range plans specific to each city to ensure all students have access to music, theater and the visual arts. The Kennedy Center is devoting about $500,000 to begin the program and expects to keep costs low for local schools.

National Gallery of Art Acquires Leo Villareal's Installation Multiverse

WASHINGTON, DC.- Conner Contemporary Art announced that the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC has acquired for the permanent collection Leo Villareal's installation Multiverse.

Multiverse, the largest and most complex light sculpture created by American artist Leo Villareal, may be seen and experienced by visitors as they pass through the Concourse walkway between the East and West Buildings of the National Gallery of Art. Commissioned by the Gallery and on view until November 2009, the work features approximately 41,000 computer-programmed LED (light-emitting diode) nodes that run through channels along the entire 200-foot-long space. The development of this LED project began in 2005, and the installation created by Villareal specifically for this location began in September 2008.

Galleries: Pinder and Ruiz, ‘El Museo del Ghetto'; Nekisha Durrett, ‘Colossus' - washingtonpost.com: "Colossal Transformations at Hillyer and G"

Working in the visual equivalent of surround sound, District artist Nekisha Durrett transforms Hillyer Art Space's main gallery into an epic landscape. In a delightfully mixed visual metaphor, Disney-ish bears live alongside a capricious monster who could have been plucked off a Kabuki stage. Chilling and enchanting at the same time, Durrett's work mimics the look of graphic novels and children's books even as it turns decidedly circumspect.

Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens / Phillips Collection

 October 10, 2009 -January 10, 2010

Man Ray translated the 20th-century modernist taste for African art into photographs that reached a popular audience. About 60 of his photographs, many never before exhibited, along with more than 40 photographs by his contemporaries, including Cecil Beaton, Walker Evans, and Alfred Stieglitz, will appear side-by-side with 20 of the African objects featured in the images. The exhibition explores the pivotal role of these photographs in shaping the perception of non-Western objects as fine art. Andrew Wodzianski: House

October 8 - November 7, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 8, 6-8pm
House Party: Friday, October 30, 9pm-12am

Andrew Wodzianski's paintings lift imagery from William Castle's b-movie horror flick from 1959, House on Haunted Hill. While a painting exhibition in its own right, House will also incorporate the gimmickry and audience participation for which director Castle was legendary. Visitors to the gallery will be invited to participate in a scavenger hunt and will ultimately have the chance to win a painting from the exhibition. On Friday, October 30, a costume party will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

Starting October 8th, Andrew Wodzianski will be releasing clues for a scavenger hunt via twitter. Five lucky people will win paintings from Wodzianski's exhibition and receive invitations for an exclusive event with the artist immediately after the October 30th House Party. Follow Wodzianski on twitter for clues and more information at: twitter.com/househuntdc.

Red Bull Art of Can DC Opens This Week in Union Station

The Red Bull Art of Can exhibit is free and open to the public from October 8th to the 19th during Union Station’s regular business hours.

The Red Bull Art of Can gallery will be located in the DC Galleria, which is in the Main Lobby of Union Station.

The Red Bull Art of Can competition challenges artists to construct pieces created with or inspired by Red Bull Energy Drink and Red Bull Simply Cola cans. Fifty six pieces were selected for this year’s DC collection.

Innovative artists—professional and amateur—submitted their designs for consideration. Ultimately 56 pieces were selected to be a part of the DC Collection. The featured artists are creative types of all ages and occupations—from students to industrial designers and sales professionals to artists. The public exhibit curated by Val Lewton, former Chief of Design and Production at Smithsonian American Art Museum, will be housed in a the DC Galleria space designed exclusively for the collection in the Main Hall of Union Station.

Life Pieces to Masterpieces (LPTM) charity organization will also be benefitting from all Red Bull sales during the morning and evening rush hours while Red Bull Art of Can DC is on display. LPTM works with young, underserved African American males living in DC and uses arts-based curriculum to discover and activate their creative abilities. They have served more than 600 boys and young men, changing life challenges into possibilities and created more than 1,000 masterpieces.

A distinguished judging panel based their decisions on the overall creativity, execution and construction of each piece. Special honors will be awarded to the top three scoring artists including the grand prize—an all-expenses-paid trip to Art Basel, the world’s leading modern art exhibit in Switzerland. The public will also designate a “People’s Choice Award” by casting votes for the artists work at the exhibit and online at www.redbullartofcan.com.

The distinguished judging panel includes:

--Tristan Eaton - Illustrator, Toy Designer, President and Creative Director of NYC Toy Brand Thunderdog Studios<
--Stash - New York Graffiti legend, Innovator and Influencer in the world of urban design
--SAGA MOOR - Philadelphia Art Pioneer and Creative Art Director at Miskeen Originals, an urban clothing line
--Philippa P.B. Hughes - Founder of The Pink Line Project, which fosters art innovation through creative programs
