Join artist Billy Friebele and Civilian Art Projects for "Walking As Drawing" followed by a talk with the artist about the project and his exhibition New Loops on view until July 23, 2011.
"Walking As Drawing" will involve participants in a mapping excursion that will result in a collective time-based drawing. Using the boundary of the surrounding blocks of the gallery, participants will walk anywhere within the contained space for exactly 30 minutes, thinking of the path as a drawn line.

Sondheim Artscape Prize: 2011 Finalists

In conjunction with Artscape, Baltimore’s premier arts festival organized by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, the BMA presents a special exhibition of works by the finalists for the Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize. The finalists this year are Stephanie Barber, Louie Palu, Mark Parascandola, Matthew Porterfield and Rachel Rotenberg.
The winner of the $25,000 prize will be announced at a special award ceremony at the BMA on Saturday, July 9 at 7 p.m. Galleries open at 6 p.m. Celebrate the winner and finalists during a free reception, starting at 7:30 p.m. Artscape is held July 15-17, 2011.
Named after the late Baltimore civic leader Walter Sondheim and his late wife, Janet, the Sondheim Artscape Prize recognizes the achievements of visual artists living or working in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and southeastern Pennsylvania. The semi-finalists, finalists, and winner are all chosen by an independent panel of jurors. This year’s jurors are Polly Apfelbaum, a New York-based artist; Isolde Brielmaier, curator, writer, and creative consultant; Lucy Gallun, a curatorial assistant in the Photography Department of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Tina Kukielski, a member of the curatorial team that is organizing the 56th Carnegie International, a leading global survey of contemporary art. An exhibition of works by the semi-finalists is on view at the Maryland Institute College of Art, July 14 - 31, 2011.

Selected by the gallery’s director, Laura Graham, this collection features solely woodcuts. Celebrating the oldest printmaking medium, this show presents the gallery’s oldest print- a woodcut from the Nuremburg Chronicles, dated 1493. Around the artifact are examples of the woodcut’s evolution, including many fresh and innovative approaches to this relief technique by 20th century and contemporary artists. Diverse woodcut styles are represented in beautiful and compelling imagery. Highlights include prints by Luigi Rist (1888-1959), who mixed old Japanese woodblock techniques with his own Yankee ingenuity, as well as a white-line woodcut by Provincetown artist, Blanche Lazzell (1878-1956), who pioneered this medium, the first printmaking method unique to the United States.

The Brentwood Arts Exchange announces The Sky's the Limit, the 2011 Prince George's County Juried Exhibition. Photographic imagery is ubiquitous in nearly every aspect of our lives, from billboards, to cell phone videos, to keepsake albums, to Facebook profiles. It's no coincidence that it is just as pervasive throughout contemporary art - even in media that are often thought of in stark contrast to traditional photography. The Sky's the Limit presents a glimpse of the ways photography employs itself throughout the visual arts, here and now. Juried by Michael Platt, the exhibition presents the best photo-inclusive art by artists who live, work, or study in Prince George's County. Hosted in the Gateway Arts District for the second time, this Prince George's County Juried Exhibition is our chance to show off the important contributions that artists in our county make to contemporary art throughout the region.
PURCHASE AWARDS - Over $2,000 The Sky's the Limit will feature two purchase awards totalling over $2,000.
JUROR Michael B. Platt is a 2007 recipient of the prestigious Franz and Virginia Bader Fund Grant. Long known as a printmaker, Platt now prefers the more encompassing designation, "imagemaker." His artwork recently has turned to digital imagery and book art that combines image and poetry-fragments, allowing us glimpses of ourselves.

This year’s spectacular lineup for 2011 Capital Fringe Festival has over 100 shows at 19 venues with approximately 2,000 participating performing artists. The area’s largest performing arts festival will feature a variety of shows ranging from comedy to dance, from musical theatre to experimental performance art.
Individual adult tickets are $17 plus a required one-time purchase of a festival admission button ($7). Discounts and multiple-show passes are also for sale. Tickets on sale at (866) 811-4111 or at capitalfringe.org and at the box office 60 minutes before each performance.
NO LATE SEATING: All seats are general admission. There is no late seating at Fringe. With only 30 minutes between performances, things have to keep running on time.

Untitled MFA Invitational Exhibition Pairs Up-and-Coming Artists with Emerging Art Historians
Untitled is a unique traveling MFA invitational exhibition organized and curated by University of Virginia (U.Va.) graduate students Michael Maizels and Brittany Strupp that pairs up-and-coming artists from the mid-Atlantic region with emerging scholars, critics and curators. The exhibition grew out of the curators’ shared realization that while the art-world offers an increasingly robust support system for emerging artists, there was no substantial framework in place for
connecting these early career artists with peers engaged in critical or curatorial practice. They recognized that their position within the art and architectural history program at U.Va. would enable them to create singular moments of interpretive dialogue between young artists and scholars.
Works by eight outstanding artists from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), the University of Maryland (UMD), and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) are included in the exhibition. An accompanying catalogue includes interpretive essays written by eight U.Va. graduate students in the history of art and architecture from a broad range of academic specializations. Structured to correspond with the work students were producing, the exhibition and catalogue explore the common theme of neo-surrealism and the visualization of invisible currents of psychic and physical energy that passes through individuals and their environments. As the public increasingly questioned the war in Vietnam, a group of American scientists deeply concerned about the use of Agent Orange and other herbicides started a movement to ban what they called “ecocide.” Incorporating in-depth interviews, unique archival collections, and recently declassified national security documents, Zierler examines the movement to ban ecocide as it played out amid the rise of a global environmental consciousness and growing disillusionment with the containment policies of the cold war era.

"West River Sunrise"
Frances Borchardt captures the people and places along Maryland’s Western Shore with her camera, but a simple photograph is only the beginning of her artistic process. She dissects photographs into mosaic-like pieces, which are then strategically positioned into empty printers’ type cases to create an intriguing display of repetitions and patterns.
While Borchardt photographs everyday places in and around her rural hometown south of Annapolis, her unusual method of display truly sets her work apart. She seeks to “capture the spirit of a place” in her multiple image montages, while adding a distinguishing factor that encourages viewers to take a second glance.
Once the image and type case are paired, Borchardt works on placement. She orders various print sizes to accommodate the various compartment sizes. She also faces the challenge of dealing with the curve of the photograph once it’s placed into a compartment, using multiple copies to create an uninterrupted image.
Borchardt began her career as a fine arts photographer, but moved on to commercial photography and graphic design. She credits this career choice for her attention to form, color, texture, shape, and shadow, as well as affinity for balance and symmetry. “I pre-visualize how a work will unfold in a case,” say Borchardt. The type cases, which are purchased in antique stores or acquired from friends, dictate the placement and orientation of an image.

How often do citizens, city officials, and other decision-makers find confusion instead of clarity when discussing urban design? How can we attempt to help guide neighborhoods, towns, and cities and overcome the failures of the past, address current issues, and anticipate the needs of the future when we lack of a common language on urban design?
Dhiru Thadani’s The Language of Towns & Cities: offers a visual "encyclodictionary" that allows the professional and the layperson easy access to a vast source of ideas, materials, and methods at once comprehensive and accessible.
Over a decade in the making, this landmark publication is meticulously researched and extensively illustrated with photographs, drawings, and charts, and includes a detailed glossary of more than seven hundred words and terms commonly used in architecture and urban planning. >From “A” and “B” streets to Zero Lot and Zeitgeist, THE LANGUAGE OF TOWNS & CITIES: A VISUAL DICTIONARY is at once comprehensive and accessible.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: *Dhiru A. Thadani* is the recipient of the 2011 Seaside Prize. He is a practicing architect, planner, and educator who has worked in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, in urban design, town planning, and architectural design.

Transformer presents the 8th year of the Exercises for Emerging Artists program, with three individual, site specific installations in our project space by emerging sculptors: Oreen Cohen, Sean Lundgren and Lindsay Rowinski. E8: Sculpture marks each of the participating artists first DC solo exhibition.
Launched in March 2004, Transformer's Exercises For Emerging Artists was created to support artists at critical points or crossroads in their professional growth and development, and to advance participating artists' creative careers. Consisting of a series of two-hour, bi-weekly gatherings spanning three months, the program is designed to stimulate and encourage participating artists as they create new work. In addition to peer critique sessions, the participating artists received mentorship and critical feedback on their work from guest facilitator Joe Hicks, and visiting artist mentors: Kyan Bishop, Mary Early, Laurel Lukaszewski, and Ledelle Moe.

This past winter 54 of Washington DC's finest artists came together to produce wildly creative designs that form a playing card deck unique to our area. The culmination of these efforts was then published in a deck of fully functional playing cards with traditional suites of diamonds, hearts, spades and clubs. Although decks of cards--designed by artists or created in a particular theme--have been around for centuries, this latest variation on the concept has given DC area artists a fun way to showcase their individual expressions in card form. Both the originals and the decks of cards will be on exhibit at
Touchstone Gallery during the month of July as Touchstone partners with Art In Hand, to promote the work of artists here in DC. Each deck is composed of a fantastic array of genres and mediums which are a big hit with artists, school teachers, magicians, game players and art lovers everywhere. Each deck is like holding an Art Gallery right in your own hands. Washington is the third city in a series of art decks created by Art In Hand TM, an arts publisher out of Charlotte, NC. Founded by Dione Goyette in 2009, the first project united artists in the Charlotte area and then inspired a deck in Portland, Oregon.
This imaginative and collaborative project isn't just fun and games. So far, participating artists in Charlotte and Portland can boast that their work is in the homes of over 3,000 and 5,000 people respectively. Decks in both cities will go back for second printings this year.

Artist and Early Childhood Educator creates acrylic paintings in the American abstraction tradition. McGee is inspired by Pablo Picasso who said, “Every child is an artist, but the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” For thirty years McGee has been teaching and assisting Early Childhood teachers to find the artist within.
Donna K. McGee’s work is well known in the Washington, DC area. Her award winning work has been exhibited in New York and is in public and private collections. Her surfaces initially portray calmness, but they betray the possibility of implosion, as the many facades give way to the unknown beneath.
