This curated exhibition features works by artists who make use of the processes of observing, sorting and classifying as a prelude to creating shape, structure and color. The exhibit will high-light the inherent conceptual and procedural similarities between scientific and artistic pro-cesses. Works by Susan Eder and Craig Dennis, Laurel Lukaszewski, Richard Dana, and Tom Green are included.

These mixed media works are based on visual observations the artist has collected while wandering in different parts of the world. Karametou has saved these visual glimpses as a way of synthesizing and interpreting her experiences, encasing them in small plastic sleeves, like an archival photographic display. Hung together with artist made books and other works, they present an open-ended story with both personal and universal impact.

A morning ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Nov. 13 (weather permitting), will precede a free open house where the public can explore the galleries, meet curators and enjoy live music. The Renwick will remain open after hours that evening to present a large-scale version of its DIY program, “Handi-hour,” featuring “all you can craft” activities inspired by artworks in “WONDER,” craft beer and live music. Personal Patterns @ King Street Gallery, Reception: Thursday, October 22, 6–8 p.m.

Exhibition Dates: October 22 - November 25, 2015
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 22, 6 - 8 p.m.

Nineteen local artists exhibit work in media as diverse as glass, photography, mixed-media sculpture, and acrylic painting. Personal Patterns shows how artists use abstract pattern in work about activism, ethnic identity, psychology, and more.

According to curator Claudia Rousseau, Personal Patterns engages “how an artist’s use of pattern might reveal something about his/her sense of identity, express cultural traditions, ethnic or racial origins, and family ties.” Personal Patterns brings together 19 artists who work in media as diverse as glass, photography, mixed-media sculpture, monotype, and acrylic painting. Their work is linked not by medium, but through their adoption of pattern in a personally distinct way.

Personal Patterns includes work by local artists Sondra Arkin, Michele Banks, Jessica Beels, Joan Belmar, Shanthi Chandrasekar, Alonzo Davis, Helen Frederick, Susan Goldman, Amber Robles-Gordon, Pat Goslee, Elyse Harrison, Sean Hennessey, Ellen Hill, Matt Hollis, Bridget Sue Lambert, Carien Quigora, Jessica Van Brakle, Ellyn Weiss, and Helen Zughaib.

Personal Patterns Panel Discussion: Thursday, November 5, 4-5:30 p.m

This discussion focuses on the work in Personal Patterns at the King Street Gallery. Participating artists will discuss the meaning embedded in pattern: how it might reveal emotions, politics, a sense of identity, or origins. The panel, moderated by curator Claudia Rousseau, features exhibiting artists Joan Belmar, Helen Frederick, Susan Goldman, Amber Robles-Gordon, and Jessica Beels.
The discussion will be held in the Cafritz Foundation Arts Center, room 101.

Regular Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

ALLEY MUSEUM OPENS IN DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON

DC ALLEY MUSEUM • DEDICATION / OPENING RECEPTION
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2015 (4-7PM)
BLAGDEN ALLEY • OUTSIDE LA COLOMBE COFFEE SHOP
BETWEEN M & N AND 9TH & 10TH STS NW • WASHINGTON DC

WASHINGTON, DC is now becoming known for fresh (non-historic) public art and vibrant mural
painting done by our living artists. A coalition of painters from the region have come together
and created the DC ALLEY MUSEUM in BLAGDEN ALLEY – opening 24/7 on Friday
OCTOBER 30TH in downtown WASHINGTON DC.

Just a few blocks from the now trendy Blagden Alley, there once was a Museum of Temporary
Arts, a d.c. space, a Washington Project for the Arts, and in the Shaw neighborhood alley, there
were spaces known as The Fight Club, The Warehouse, and Signal 66, not to mention dozens
of artists and production businesses like City Lights and Eco Media, all in venues created by
artists for the presentation of their work.

The DC ALLEY MUSEUM builds on this tradition in a fresh way while celebrating the temporary
nature of outdoor artworks and life. Beginning in 2015 a series of works were commissioned
by artists with a history in the Shaw neighborhood and the alley -- BILL WARRELL, LISA
MARIE THALHAMMER, ROZEAL BROWN, ANIEKAN UDOFIA, CITA SADELI CHELOVE.
They have created a stunning display of new works painted directly on the garage doors of
several buildings. In the coming year more artists will be commissioned from across the city to
fill more blank garage doors and walls. The museum will expand to include video documentation
of the multi-year project, connecting new generations of artists with some of our city’s “old
masters.”

Murals get the artwork of painters out into the public sphere in a uniquely bold and playful way,
a great way to educate the public about local artists living and working in their community.
Imagine a Museum that features DC artists open 24/7 without restrictions (no hours, no guards,
cameras encouraged); welcoming the entire city to stroll or drive through, stop in the LA
COLOMBE coffee shop and pick up your postcard/map of the DC ALLEY MUSEUM and join in
the art, music and celebration.

This wonderfully serious artwork is made possible with a grant from the D.C. COMMISSION ON
THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES • PUBLIC ART BUILDING COMMUNITY PROGRAM and the
BLAGDEN ALLEY NEIGHBORS that supply the canvas for some of DCs finest artists.

Renée Stout: WILD WORLD

September 26 - December 19, 2015
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 26, 2015, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

In her fifth solo exhibition at HEMPHILL, Stout addresses a progression of themes, first inviting the viewer into a “Room of Spirits” which sets the stage for there being a presence beyond the self. Stout then introduces devices designed as a mechanical means to transfer magic or captured energy from one source to another. The artist asks “do I have the ability, if I try hard enough, to tap into a universal energy that’s more enlightened?” Stout’s hand-built machines, utilizing wire, wood, paint, and a myriad of found items, are systems of the mind powered by spiritual energy. Stout urges the viewer to embrace and believe in the presence of spiritual energy, capably presenting the tools of her own creation through which it works.

Stout believes in the power of objects to transmit knowledge. In creating a lifelong body of work that serves as evidence of existence, she shows the unfolding story of a modern culture that embodies everything that came before. Her work draws power from the struggle of forces – political, religious, intellectual – present at this moment in history. As a society we are “At the Crossroads” embroiled in a storm of conflicting viewpoints, social and economic inequality, and political and religious conflict. We are presented with daily news of tragic killings, mass shootings, and the destruction of cultural and societal heritage. Stout faces this Wild World head on, responding to anguish with compassion and the desire to move forward. Always questioning – do you see me? do you see yourself? – Stout commands the viewer to examine their choices and conjure the consequences.
