Transformer's Annual Silent Auction & Benefit Party is the primary fundraising event, providing essential support for year-round programming, exhibitions, and services. The auction will feature 150+ artworks by DC emerging and established artists, as well as national and international artists. 

Transformer is honored to have The Ambassador of Italy, Armando Varricchio and Mrs. Varricchio, as Auction Diplomatic Chairs and to be featuring a selection of artworks by Italian artists.

About LAUREL HAUSLER

A Washington, DC native, Laurel Hausler's love of literature, antiquity, unsolved mysteries and the obscure inspire the stories behind her work. Working in a subtractive and additive process, she creates the surface of her paintings in encaustic, oil and graphite. Admired for resisting a self-conscious approach to process, Hausler reveals lines, veils and gestures on her surfaces that demonstrate her decision-making process through the work's evolution to its finished state.

Artists from across the region were asked to interpret the theme, "Oh! The joy!"  The selected entries represent the breadth and wealth of excellent art being created in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.  Not only displaying a variety of styles and media, the show is a fascinating exploration of the creative process.

At the opening reception on Sunday, September 25 from 4 to 6, Megan Beyer, Executive Director for the President's Council on the Arts and Humanities will award cash prizes of $1500 and $1000.  The prize money is furnished by TTR | Sotheby's International Realty, sponsor of the event.

The exhibition includes the work of seven invited artists who have previously exhibited in the gallery and thirty artists selected from responses to an open call.  The invited artists are:

Theme: Oh! The joy!
The theme asked artists to reflect on a moment of pure joy. It was inspired by  Lewis and Clark's expedition across the unchartered North American continent to reach the Pacific Ocean. After an arduous, two-year trek, William Lewis crested a hill, saw the vast body of water and cried, "The Ocean in view. Oh! The joy!" It was suggested that artists might explore that singular burst of relief and satisfaction after enduring a difficult task, the magic of being struck by something unexpected and delightful, or the sudden transformation that is experienced in sheer ebullience. 

In fact, at the moment those words were uttered by Lewis, the expedition was actually facing an estuary of the Columbia River, not the open ocean. This presented another aspect of the theme for artists to consider: whether a moment of joy is 'valid' when it is later learned that the reason or impetus for the emotion was wrong or undeserved.

Each of these three artists, in their own way, is concerned with the process of bringing things together. Painting abstractly and with varying ties to the landscape, Gregson, Magnolia and Treado all use paint to explore space and atmosphere as a vehicle for experiencing and entering into their work. Each artist also expresses an interest in converging paradoxes as a guiding force in their creative process. These include an ongoing dialog between reason and imagination, determination and chance, order and the unpredictable, mutation and adaption, and the instinctive and the intentional.

These calligraphic abstract paintings reflect an interest in color, movement and pattern, drawing heavily on the artist’s background in Middle-Eastern language and culture. An interest in dreams and storytelling underlies the work as well, creating a framework for an exploration of the interplay between order and chaos.

Vertical: Paintings by Joel D’Orazio | Ramp Gallery

Joel D’Orazio exhibits a series of paintings executed on interior doors that blend vibrant color and buoyant shape to create dream-like atmospheric entryways. A former architect, D’Orazio taps into a deep knowledge of space, using complex layering techniques that highlight the fluidity of the pint and dissolve any central focus or subject matter.

"Art from South Africa: Showcasing Passion, Humanity and Diversity"

Vula Amehlo Art is proud to present a visual art exhibition by 12 South African-based artists: 

Layziehound Coka, Rhona Gorvy, Jemmiro (Mozambique), Lehlogonolo Mashaba, Tshepo Masopa, Neo Matloga, Ephia Mmbidi, Pebofatso Mokoena, Petros Mwenga (Zimbabwe), Mongezi Ncaphayi, Bambo Sibiya, and John Taouss Tuyisabe (Rwanda/Uganda) 

Their wonderful and inspiring artworks include oil and acrylic paintings, charcoal and pastel drawings, ink drawings on canvas, collage (from recycled prints, traditional African textiles, etc.), original prints (etching, drypoint, linocut, aquatint, screenprints, monoprint) and multi-media work. All of these artists have participated in successful shows in South Africa and the United States (Washington and New York), as well as other countries. 

Vula Amehlo Art, founded in 2011 by Anne Gordon, aims to promote the artwork of these and other artists based in South Africa.

This show is dedicated to Rhona Gorvy, a life-long artist and humanitarian, who sadly passed away at the age of 94 in July 2016 – a huge loss to the South African arts community. 

Indiegogo Funding for DC mural book

Perry Frank began documenting DC’s murals in 1996 with the goals of making the magnificent public art more accessible and meaningful, and of preserving the city’s mural story for future generations. Over the years we have lead tours, produced public programs, and organized exhibitions. We have pursued our vision with small grant funding and the sweat equity of associates, advisors, and interns. Most recently we received a grant from HumanitiesDC to organize a public program on the early history of murals in DC (c. 1970-85) to accompany publication of an article on the same subject.

DC Murals is now taking the next step—we are planning to publish a coffee table book that will capture the vital mural scene in the nation’s Capital. The book will draw on our extensive archive of images and interviews to showcase and interpret murals from 1970 to the present, representing all eight wards and many city neighborhoods. It will include profiles of the artists and a list of donors.  

Washington is the only major mural city in the country that does not have a mural book—some have several. Beautiful reproductions and interpretive text will electrify residents who are surrounded by the art, and amaze visitors who know Washington only as the “Federal city.” To support development, design, and publication of the book, we are launching a Crowd Source funding campaign through Indiegogo. We’ve attached a link to a video explaining our project. I hope that you will take a look and donate now, so that we can have the book ready to go by the end of the year.

The goal of Art in Context events is to showcase artists and artwork in the broader social, economic, political context in which they exist. When members of the arts, economic, foreign policy, and academic communities come together and increase their understanding of subject matter outside of their respective fields, they can establish new connections and pathways of thinking, which will in turn allow them to become better informed, conscious leaders.

This panel is in conjuntion with our June exhibition Repression, Resurgence, Reemergence: One Hundred Years of Re-possessing and Re-appropriating Irish Identity.

This curated exhibition is presented in partnership with Solas Nua. Curated by Jackie Hoysted, this exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Easter Uprising. Twelve visual artists for whom Ireland is their own or their forefathers' birthplace or, their adopted home, were invited to create works that investigate Irish cultural identity.

This year marks the centennial anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, a pivotal point in Irish history that served as a catalyst for the beginning of the end of the British occupation of Ireland. Hillyer has partnered with Solas Nua to present a curatored exhibit featuring work that investigate Irish cultural identity.

On June 16th, curator and artist Jackie Hoysted will lead an Irish Ogham Script (temporary) tattoo activity and artist a poet Bart O'Reilly will perform a poetry reading. Irish refreshments will be served.

The 39th Street Gallery / Gateway Arts Center Second Floor       3901 Rhode Island Avenue Brentwood, MD 20722 Gallery Hours:  Thursdays      7 - 9 pm  Saturdays    12 - 3 pm and by appointment Curator's Office is delighted to join The 39th Street Art Gallery / Gateway Arts Center in co-promoting an exhibition of noted feminist artist Leslie Holt.  In her recent series, Unspeakable, Holt embroiders meticulous line drawings of figures sourced from Pablo Picasso´s famous political war lamentation, Guernica(1937) and its preparatory sketches. Other artistic sources for her figures include the women in Vincent Van Gogh´s Sorrow (1882) and Käthe Kollwitz´s Hunger (1922).  Situating these figures on unprimed canvas besides puddles of dripped paint or on blank grounds, Holt imbues the composition´s negative space and the canvas´s very materiality with ghosts of expunged drama. The paint stains are substitute loci of crisis; the embroidered lines are umbilical cords to unseen tragedy. That which is not visible is indeed unspeakable. About the Artist  Leslie Holt is an American artist based in Hyattsville, Maryland.  She is   recognized far and wide for her Hello Masterpiece series of paintings. Holt copies instantly recognized paintings in miniature, faithful in all respects to the original, save for the addition of the Hello Kitty character appropriately inserted into the action. Her work is featured in a book that analyzes the Japanese icon as both art and commodity in Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty's Trek Across the Pacific by Christine Yano. She received a BFA in Painting at Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA in Painting at Washington State University. She is currently Co-director of Red Dirt Studio,  a warehouse studio for a small group of independently practicing artists and creative professionals in Mt. Rainier, MD. Leslie has taught studio art, art history and art appreciation on the college level since 2001. She has also worked as a social worker and advocate for people with developmental disabilities, mental illness, and people receiving welfare benefits. From 2009-2012 she served as founding board president and then executive director of VSA Missouri, a statewide organization that promotes access to arts for people with disabilities. In addition to her studio practice, Leslie teaches at Art Works Now in Mt. Rainier, Maryland, Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission in Greenbelt, Maryland, and online for Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri.  She has exhibited her work nationally and is represented by the David Lusk Gallery in Memphis and Curator's Office in Washington , DC.
