Special Events at G-40 This Week
Thursday:
From 6-8pm, Albus Cavus is taking participatory public art from the outside to the classroom. The Thursday class is Beat Production – Words, Beats and Life. The class is all ages, and has a $30 suggested donation. The workshops are held on the 8th floor next to the installation created by CRI, RVLTN, RAIN, JAZI, DECOY, CON, ULTRA, ROSINA, MIKA ALTSKAN and PETER K.

Friday:
Georgetown at G40, with a special musical performance by See-I. Sponsored by the Georgetown University Art Aficionados.

GU Art Aficionados is a community of art enthusiasts committed to expanding artistic opportunities at Georgetown and the greater DC community, and by doing so, catalyzing creative thinking among students.

SEE-I has become one of the east coast's premier party bands because they know how to get people dancing all night with a smile on their face.

From 6-8pm Albus Cavus will present an art workshop: Tag Your Name taught by Asad “ULTRA” Walker. All ages are welcome with a $5 per name suggested donation. Please wear work clothes.

Saturday:
Albus Cavus will be presenting Abstract Mail Art taught by Franck De Las Mercedes (all ages, Suggested Donation $30, work clothes) from 12-2pm. From 6-8pm, check out Stenciling by Kevin “JAZI” Irvin (all ages, Suggested Donation $30).

Bisnow presents an 80's Throw Back Closing Reception at G-40: The Summit


Join the Crystal City BID and Art Whino for a closing reception swimming in the vast glory of all that is 80's with DJ LIL'e on the turntables.

There will be prizes for best 80's outfit, an Atari 2600 Tournament on a giant projection screen with prizes, a break dance competition, and a Michael Jackson Dance Off.

G-40: The Summit / Crystal City Art Exhibition

Art Whino teams up with Crystal City BID and Vornado to present G-40: The Summit, a month long exhibition and event series featuring over 500 artists from around the world.

The mission of G40: The Summit is to bring the leaders of the New Brow genre together in Crystal City, VA in an effort to explore, discuss and grow this movement. G-40: The Summit will be a culmination of ideas and processes, brought together and highlighted by region and style, creating, for the first time, a full cross examination of this genre.

This event will feature 75,000 sq ft of exhibition space with 5 floors of art! Each floor will represent different hot hubs of the New Brow movement: The DC, New York, and California metro areas, plus one all encompassing floor for international and other regional artists. Visitors of G-40: The Summit will, for the first time, be able to experience entire floors showcasing artists from these regions, and because of this set up, connect the dots of how the different sub-cultures and environs affect the art. From the laid back California Style, to the fast paced New York way of living, the art will bring a fresh visual perspective that words cannot provide. With all the different styles in one place the New Brow movement, now growing and expanding worldwide, will be more comprehensible to the viewer, finally defining the line between the movement’s beginnings to its future. A movement that currently exists without much literature or founding in “traditional” institutions, yet includes some of the most highly recognizable and sought after art in the world, will inevitably become a major player in the intellectual and mainstream art world.

Each floor will have 10-30 “Showcased artists” who will activate the space with murals and installations, helping to set the mood for their region. In addition to the showcased artists, an additional 50-100 region of specific artists will be exhibited on each floor. The show will run up for a month. During the month there will be musical and visual performances, lectures, and more. Also there will be featured various art related groups and non-profits, helping to promote their mission and inspire ongoing conversations about the New Brow art world in DC and beyond.

Art Whino and The International Lifeline Fund (“ILF”) present Life Essentials, a four-city tour that brings together the best Visual and Musical Artists in support of ILF’s ground-breaking humanitarian and environmental projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The exhibit will feature the works of over 100 artists from across the country and around the globe. The tour will kick off in Washington, D.C. with a two-night event on Thursday and Saturday, September 24 and 26. Following the D.C. launch, the show will hit the road with stops at Art Basel in South Beach on December 5-6, New York City in March, and San Francisco in June.
Thursday, September 24, 2009, will be an invitation-only event featuring live musical performances, a presentation by ILF, and an exclusive sneak preview of the artwork in advance of the official opening of the “Life Essentials” show on Saturday. Guests will be given the opportunity to purchase the artwork and otherwise to support ILF’s vital mission through participation in a silent auction and individual donations. Many celebrities, politicians, ambassadors, and other DC power players are expected to attend. Savory hor’dourves and sweet desserts will be served along with libations.
Saturday, September 26, 2009, will be the official “Life Essentials” art show opening kicking off the four city tour at the Portals Theater in Washington, DC, Art Whino opens this incredible art show and reception party featuring a night of lush entertainment by Ancient Astronauts, ESL music’s newest signed talent from Germany, who will headline the evening with a special performance, setting the mood for this spectacular evening.

Black and White is a show bringing together three very different genres of art and effectively taking a cross section of formal, comic book, and abstract styles that each present very different approaches to art that formally relies solely on the positive and negative spatial tension between black and white. Three separate series will be featured; "MEN" by Tyler Matthew Oyer, Black Ink Noir by Shawn Martinbrough, and Black Ink Abstract Series by Anthony Patrick Jones II. Together they will create an exhibition focused on the aesthetic and intrinsically dualistic elements of black and white compositions.

The Crystal City BID and Art Whino have teamed up to host the Inked Souls exhibition, featuring customized sneakers and fine art by local, national and international leaders in the Pop Surrealism/Urban Contemporary art movement. This provocative exhibit will showcase paired works of customized sneakers and canvases from 30 artists from around the world as well as images from select photographers.

The FREE exhibit will be held in newly renovated retail space, donated by Lowe Enterprises Real Estate Group, at the corner of 23rd Street and Crystal Drive. Am Radio Crew have blown up a HUGE mural in the space! Along with the mural, World Class Cuts will be supplying a Barber chair and 2 barbers to give you a old school fade. Yes old school fade!

AM Radio is a collective of visual artists, whose mission is to infuse the raw elements of sound and texture to inspire life. The creative process incorporates the work of artists and DJs to paint large compositions before live audiences. With each painting taking approximately four hours to complete, the technique is a challenge of graphic resourcefulness. It compresses the creative experience into spontaneous reactions of time, space and energy - a result that captures the mood, sound and electricity of the environment.

Jazirock and Crew
Jazriock, Adrian Akerman and crew activate the space with amazing huge pieces throughout the exhibit!

Jazirock hit the Charm City graffiti scene at 12 and made the transition from street graffiti to canvas in the mid-1990s. Today, he takes what he learned growing up in the streets of southwest Baltimore and from the Baltimore graffiti artists that mentored him, and applies it to the world of fine art, creating volume and texture that give life to abstract, socio political and pop culture images and scenes. Frequently, Jazi seeks to express a playful presence in his soul that translates to paintings that tap into the world of the child within us all. For example, the character Pinocchio is an iconic figure that appears in his work.

Jazi has produced work for Red Bull, Adidas, rapper Paul Wall and the Washington Childrens Hospital charity events. He has shown and performed at Art Whino (where his work is in the permanent gallery) the Low-Fi Social Club (The Bugout) and Joes2 (Nothin but the Breaks) in Baltimore and at Artomatic, where he designs and paints many of the performance spaces each year. He often paints live, this past weekend performing live at a street art party at Rockstar Bar, in Williamsburg, NYC.

Truth among Liars

Tim Slayton is the founder and principle artist for Truth Among Liars..., an art, clothing and design collective based in Washington DC. He showcases his skill as a visual street artist using graffiti, wheat paste, digital art, silk screened canvas and clothing to create the simple, yet gritty and thought provoking images and designs that dominate the Truth Among Liars style. This collective was developed with the idea of informing the masses of the balance between opposites in all aspects of life particularly fact and fiction.

Black Cats Resident DJ Lil'e, aka Erin Myers, specializes in rare extended mixes and one-hit wonders whose names have been swallowed by time. Remember Flesh for Lulu, Kon Kan or Anything Box? But Lil'e does not sacrifice a solid dance floor just to showcase her extensive record collection.

Lil'e, 32, who started "Right Round" in 2002, focuses on skillful mixing, but she still finds a few moments of each song to step back from her mixer and do a little dancing herself. When she plays at other venues such as Felix or Saint-Ex, Lil'e strays far from the '80s, breaking out underground hip-hop, big beat and assorted electronica.

TTM Entertainment
Take The Money Entertainment is an Independent Label, as well as a Public Recording Studio founded by Robbie Sanchez and Brandon “Big Benz” Martin. “TTM” Entertainment offers an array of services for musicians and recording artists of all skill levels. As a Record Label, TTM offers such services as “Artist Development”, “Promotion”, Album Scheduling/Release, and Distribution.

Oneness Theories / The Art of Adam Russell

This Saturday - The Oneness Theories

Russell relates his art to his general worldview, and likens his series to the fortitude of a building, its meaning and value, and how it is affected by the combination of its components. As in a building, where each brick connects together to create a physical security based on the integrity of the foundation, so is his art related to its components. It is the underground source unseen that holds up the visual expression. This body of paintings is composed of a combination of many structures; portraits, animals, landscapes, structures, and impromptu expressions of color to build a conceptual environment, a home for their conversation.

One Out of a Hundred / John Malloy

"One Out of a Hundred" centers around John Malloy's personal series of mixed-media works that explore drug side effects as a metaphor for consumer and media-driven culture's long-term effects on the human spirit. The originals for each piece include pen & ink, oil paint, and other media, and will be exhibited along with large-format, limited edition signed prints of the series. Limited edition prints of Malloy's comics "Queasy" [Image Comics], "Channel One", and rock-interview comics for the award-winning Lemon Magazine will also be on display, in addition to illustrations for the band Minus The Bear, I Heart Comix, and other magazines and publications.

Cheeseburger and Sushi / Brandon Hill

Solo show of Brandon Hill through October 22

Art Whino presents Cheeseburger Sushi, a playful juxtaposition of forms and ideas by artist Brandon Hill. In this solo exhibition Brandon infuses his funky style into a charged cross representation of the modern vs. the traditional, the Eastern vs. the Western, and the image vs. its physicality.Touting the Cheeseburger as the “ambassador” food item of Americanism , Brandon playfully asserts that it is comparable in that sense to the way Sushi is viewed with an association to Japanese-ism. The two, he explains, “serve the same purpose in their level of respective popularity as well as status.” This core concept is the underlying connection within his various works that all incorporate “a fun mix of ideas that could be considered traditional by one culture” and new to another. This show promises to be eye candy for everyone; incorporating 2D works, sculpture, designer vinyl, furniture art, light installation, and (of course) tasty treats, all in Brandon Hill’s unique and light hearted style.

Art Whino's "Block Party," serves as a reflection on art pricing and buying. Solo artist Daniel Fleres and 10 others participating in this exhibition are set to display hundreds of small paintings on wooden blocks. The little wood pieces vary in depth and are designed to be displayed singly, in groupings and even as collaboration pieces. The exhibition is designed around around the idea that art should be accessible to people of all ages and income levels. All works in the show will be priced at the same affordable price.

Life and all of its complexities is the source of artistic inspiration for Dan Fleres. Fleres creates streamlined portraits of mournful yet vividly colored characters against skillfully rendered backgrounds. His work is flavored with subtle, insightful views of pop culture and society.

Inked Souls

Art Whino joins forces with Tagür Footwear to present Inked Souls, an exhibition featuring customized sneakers and fine art by 35 local, national and international leaders in the Pop Surrealism/Urban Contemporary art movement.
