97 MARYLAND ARTISTS RECEIVE STATE ARTS COUNCIL 2010 INDIVIDUAL ARTIST AWARDS

BALTIMORE, MD (May 19, 2010) -- Governor Martin O'Malley announced that 97 Maryland artists have been selected to receive Individual Artist Awards totaling $247,000 from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. A reception honoring the artists will be held at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore on May 20, 6:30 p.m.

"The Individual Artist Awards program is an excellent way for the State of Maryland to recognize the accomplishments of its many talented artists," said Governor O'Malley. "By bestowing these awards, we are recognizing the vital role the arts play in our communities, enhancing the quality of life for all Maryland citizens."

Artists competed for $1,000, $3,000 and $6,000 awards in the following categories:  Fiction, Media, Solo Dance Performance, Solo Musical Performance, Solo Theatrical Performance, and Visual Arts: Digital/Electronic Arts, Painting, and Works on Paper. Artistic categories alternate each year. Applications for 2011 will be available at www.msac.org in June.

Congratulations to Joan Belmar, Carol Brown Goldberg, and W.C. Richardson and all the award recipients of the MARYLAND STATE ARTS COUNCIL FY 2010 INDIVIDUAL ARTIST AWARDS.

New Art Dialogue Series Opens Second Season with International Curator Basualdo


November 11 Lecture Includes Comments on Global Curatorial Experiences

The second season of the Contemporary Museum’s New Art Dialogue Series, a forum for discussion of contemporary art in Baltimore, will begin Wednesday, November 11 at 7 p.m. with Carlos Basualdo, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The lecture is held in collaboration with the Maryland Institute College of Art, and will be held in MICA’s Falvey Hall, located in the Brown Center at 1300 Mt. Royal Avenue in Bolton Hill.

The Contemporary Museum’s New Art Dialogue Series presents lectures and conversations by distinguished artists, critics, art historians, and curators whose work is defining the field of contemporary art. The series will cultivate critical discourse responsive to the cultural, social and political issues of our time.

A renowned curator of international exhibitions, Carlos Basualdo will share his experiences curating at prestigious international art venues and museums. His most recent work includes the celebrated Bruce Nauman exhibition at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Other projects of note include the exhibitions Structure of Survival, also for the Venice Biennale, and Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany.

Later in the season, the New Art Dialogue Series will present managing editor of Art in America Richard Vine, who will explore the radical recent changes to art and culture in China; and artist Mel Chin, who will discuss addressing social and political issues through his art.

The New Art Dialogue Series has been made possible by a sponsorship from the Louise D. & Morton J. Macks Family Foundation. Additional support has been provided by Bodil Ottesen.

Admission to the New Art Dialogue Series lecture on November 11 is $10 for the general public, $5 for students, and free to members of the Contemporary Museum and MICA students.

The Brown Center is located at 1300 Mt. Royal Avenue in Baltimore’s Bolton Hill neighborhood.

The 6th Annual Transmodern Festival
(Live.Art.Action) will be held at the H&H Building and the surrounding Lexington Market & Seton Hill neighborhood from Thursday, April 2nd to Sunday, April 5th. Following last year’s record attendance and crowds, the festival expands again in 2009 to fill four floors of artists’ lofts and galleries at the H&H Building in downtown Baltimore.

The American Craft Show

More than 700 of the country's leading craft artists will gather under one roof to present their latest hiqh-quality, handmade work to the public - at the American Craft Baltimore Show - the largest juried, indoor craft show in the nation.

The highest quality of handmade jewelry, furniture, clothing, home decor, and more, will be available for purchase at the Baltimore Convention Center, One West Pratt St, Baltimore, MD 21201.

An exhibition of pen and marker drawings including photographs of the pens used to make them. Interested artists should submit a drawing, text on the pen(s) used and a photograph of the pen(s). This exhibition will travel to Ellipse Arts Center, Arlington, VA and Lump Gallery/Projects, Raleigh, NC and possible other galleries in the coming years.

To inaugurate the expansion of the Artscape festival onto Charles Street Midway will present installations, performances, sculpture and other forms of art and performance to create an alternate carnival midway. Artists should submit proposals for 8x8 or 8x16 foot spaces. Honoraria between $200 and $800 will be provided for each project.
Curators, Ted Frankel, artist, art director, graphic designer, and owner of Sideshow at the American Visionary Art Museum; Chiara Giovando, musician, sound and video artist, and independent curator; Dina Kelberman, artist, comic book writer, fashion designer and founding member of Wham City collective; Melissa Webb, fiber artist specializing in costume, performance, and site-specific installation. Outdoor Lounge: a public sculpture exhibition

Outdoor Lounge is a public sculpture project where all of the installed works must somehow provide seating for one or more persons. This includes seat designs, sculpture forms designed to be sat on and environments that include seating. Performance/Programing within your seating area will be considered, but not required. Interested artists may submit proposals. Between $500 and $3,000 will be available for each selected project.
Curator, Michael Benevento, artist, curator, and co-director of Current Gallery since 2005; an artist run gallery, studio, and performance space in downtown Baltimore. Recent curatorial projects include Under Construction, Automation Constipation, and Hacking Utopia(s) at Current Gallery; Antagonism, Hacks, and Hoaxes at Maryland Art Place; Stuttering at the Carroll Museum; and co-curated The Dilapidated Reanimated Expo at Artscape 2006.

Baltimore Sculpture Project

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA), Artscape and the City of Baltimore present the second annual Baltimore Sculpture Project, an outdoor sculpture exhibition that will engage sites around the city. This exhibition will open in July 2008, and run through April 2009. This year’s show will concentrate on sites inside the Station North Arts & Entertainment District, at Mt. Royal Avenue and Cathedral Street on the Artscape site, Preston Gardens, and other possible locations yet to be finalized. Honoraria between $500 and $4,000 will be offered.

15th Annual Art Car and Other Wheeled Vehicle Show

Artscape and the American Visionary Art Museum invite art car artists and all artists to be part of the annual Art Car Show in Baltimore. This year, Artscape will be offering commissions for the creation of new cars, bikes and other wheeled vehicles. Limited travel stipends for out of the area cars will also be considered.
