Part art, part anthropology, Jackie Milad describes her work as a, “reference library for gestural language, simultaneously unsettling, humorous, seductive and familiar.” Inside Mouth will feature a series of elegant, lyrical line drawings that chronicle the subtlety of facial expressions and show androgynous figures in awkward exchanges with one another. A photographic analog documents volunteers imitating the expressions that appear in the drawings.

During the opening reception, several performance artists will wear the same style bald “wigs” as used in the analog to imitate the facial expressions in Milad’s drawings, a live recreation of the process that resulted in the photographs. Milad explains, “both the drawings and performances are meant to heighten and exaggerate quotidian gestures and moments.”

The exhibit features a series of ovoid, alabaster sculptures created over the course of 40 weeks, the average period of time for human gestation. In an obsessive daily routine to create the sculptures, Ami Martin Wilber continues in the vein of her past work with the use of multiples and repetition for her second solo exhibition at Flashpoint. The work serves as an abstract visual diary of the artistic process.

The Numbers Behind: Michael Dax Iacovone

In The Numbers Behind, large-scale photomontages document progressions through space and time. Artist Michael Dax Iacovone rejects traditional notions of composition, instead composing formulas to capture the concept of space, resulting in mixed media photographic creations.

Horizons Under the Surface: Tai Hwa Goh

Tai Hwa Goh's layers silkscreen and intaglio prints on thin Korean paper that she then coats with beeswax. The multi-tiered process results in two- and three-dimensional creations that the artist sees as reflecting the layers of experience and search for identity.

Christopher Myers: Standing on Two Eyes Flashpoint

Christopher Myers reacts to today’s glut of digital imagery by relying upon the ease of point and shoot technology in Standing on Two Eyes. He deals in process: heating the film, affixing it to glass, reworking the negatives chemically, developing them as gelatin prints and scanning the images to create dream-like giclée prints.

This request is open to artists, independent curators, arts organizations, private galleries or anyone choosing to present contemporary work in any medium.
All proposals must be received no later than 5 pm on Friday, January 11, 2008.

Artists and Communities Grants Workshop

Free Informational Workshop: Join Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, in partnership with the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, for a brief overview of the Artists & Communities program and grant application process. This workshop is intended for artists interested in one-to-six month residencies with community organizations and community organizations that are interested in hosting artists. Discussion will include best practices and examples of successful projects.

Artists & Communities supports residencies by visiting artists from the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania at nonprofit organizations throughout the mid-Atlantic region (Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia). Proposals for residencies that will occur between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009 are due Monday, December 3, 2007. Grants generally range from $5,000-$20,000. Artists & Communities applications/guidelines for 2008- 2009 are available at www.midatlanticarts.org.

E. Brady Robinson: Shift at Flashpoint

The gallery at Flashpoint is pleased to kick-off their fall exhibition season with an installation of color photographs by E. Brady Robinson, organized by photographer and curator Chan Chao. Shift represents the culmination of over two years of Robinson’s work and travels. Robinson is a photographer who exploits the tradition of the “snapshot” to examine social and cultural environments. Her work is informed by the technology of instant mobile image capture, as well as travel and landscape photography. She offers viewers multiple points of view and cross-cultural references while evoking the split second of time during which one experiences fleeting frames of existence from the window seat of a car, train or airplane.
