John Dreyfuss will discuss his works on view in the Sylvia Berlin Katzen Sculpture Garden at the American University Museum.

Featuring six large-scale works by sculptor John L. Dreyfuss, this exhibition is an exploration into the evolution of form and the wonder of invention. Referencing bones and early tool shapes, each work examines the relationship between form, strength of materials and the harnessing of power. Beginning with sketches, wax, plaster and cast metal models, Dreyfuss has subtly refined each work over the past decade and, through an ongoing collaboration with aerospace engineers, has experimented with the fabrication process. Rendered for the first time at monumental scale in composite materials, these extraordinary works simultaneously draw on ancient and primal references, while being distinctly contemporary in their conception.

John Dreyfuss, Enigma

September 12 - October 24, 2009

Washington DC – Hemphill Fine Arts presents Enigma, a site-specific installation by sculptor John Dreyfuss.

Enigma opens on September 12, 2009 with public reception from 6:30 – 8:30pm.

The greatness of visual art lies outside of its visible parts. An artwork’s concealed meaning must be decoded to reach its full significance. Dreyfuss’s Enigma, named for World War II German coding machines, consists of stylized submarine parts emerging from and submerging beneath the gallery’s surfaces. The artist partnered with a leading aerospace and engineering company ATK (Alliant Techsystems, Inc.) to produce the sculptural elements of the installation. The character of this type of collaboration speaks to the uneasy relationship between the individual citizen and the geo-political dynamic of our times. The installation generates a range of emotions – a calm flows from its perfectly smooth forms, implying immense power; the scale is an act of aggression; and the purpose of a submarine instills a feeling paranoia.

Tonight was the amazing auction party in the gorgeous studio of renowned Washington sculptor John Dreyfuss at Halcyon House in Georgetown. DJs Yellow Fever rocked the house. Check out the wonderful crowd of folks who came out to support emerging artists in Washington, DC. Lots of fun and art buying was had by all. We almost got a piece by artist, Tang but, alas, it got away. Bidding was good! Congrats to everyone who made this auction a hugh success and one of the best events of the year!

Due to early and over-whelming support by the Host Committee, as of Friday October 26th, the 4th Annual Transformer Silent Auction & Benefit Party is completely sold out! They are happy to take donations, but are not able to accomodate any further guest ticket purchases.

The Annual Transformer Silent Auction & Benefit Party generates close to 1/3 of the annual income, providing necessary support, in tandem with grant awards, that allows them to grow and advance their work in support of emerging artists and emergent expression in the visual arts.
