Silver Spring, Maryland – In celebration of the creative spirit, Pyramid Atlantic Art Center is proud to announce the Washington, DC film premiere of Beautiful Losers on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the historic 400-seat art deco theatre at the American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Road, Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Notable guests include Delegates Sheila Hixson and Heather Mizeur and State Senator Jamie Raskin, County Councilmember Valerie Ervin and avid art collector, Dr. Michael Pollack. The screening is the focal point of the annual fundraiser, which includes a question and answer session with special guests Dr. Martin Irvine and Roger Gastman, followed by the silent art auction and reception.

Martin Irvine is the founder and director of Irvine Contemporary and the curator behind Street/Studio, featuring works by artists who use the street and urban space as extensions of their studios, and who bring the street and urban sites into their studio, opening June 20 at Irvine Contemporary. Roger Gastman, originally from Bethesda, Maryland, is a well-regarded publisher, filmmaker and graffiti trailblazer who is currently working on his new book: WRITING: The History of American Graffiti with Caleb Neelon and producing a documentary film about DC’s graffiti legend, Cool Disco Dan.

Transformer is partnering with Pyramid Atlantic in presenting this tenth panel in Transformer's on-going FRAMEWORK Panel Series, Time and Space: Artists' Perspectives on Residency Programs. This discussion will offer attendees insights on a diverse array of artist residencies, and how artists can take advantage of these unique opportunities for creative development. Participating panelists will share their personal experiences in a range of residency programs, and present images of works created as well as visuals of residency facilities.

Participating panelists are: Julia Mandle, Jefferson Pinder, Joyce Scott, and Molly Springfield. The panel will be moderated by Victoria Reis, Executive & Artistic Director, Transformer.

FIELDWORK: PLACING SPACE IN THE COLORFIELD REMIX

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, in Silver Spring, MD, is presenting FIELDWORK: PLACING SPACE IN THE COLORFIELD REMIX, an exhibition of multimedia installations. As part of the citywide celebration of Color Field painting, Gillian Brown and Inga Frick have created two new works that play with the implications of Color Field painting for our experience of space. Tracing imaginary geometries, Gillian circumnavigates the evening horizon while Inga loops the Washington Beltway at rush hour. In an earlier collaborative piece, a trio of swimmers converge and merge in a Rorschach explosion within an immersive field of water. According to artist Brown the work is “inspired by what I have always found most compelling in Color Field paintings: a play between the boldly apparent and that which cannot be readily grasped. An important aspect of these works is to subtly draw our awareness to the limitations of our perceptions.” The exhibition is curated by Harold Linton, Chairman of the Department of Art and Visual Technology at George Mason University.

Pyramid Atlantic is featured with more than 30 Washington area museums, galleries, arts organizations and businesses participating in ColorField.remix, the largest celebration of painting ever held in the Washington area. The event honors the 1950s and 1960s Color Field visual art movement and the Washington Color School, which put Washington, DC, on the art world map. ColorField.remix includes exhibitions, public art projects, artists' talks, lectures, children's programs, and special events honoring Color Field and Washington Color School painters as well as contemporary artists influenced by those movements.
