Tim Conlon “Derailed”

Tim Conlon
“Derailed”
June 19 through July 14, 2010
Opening Show: June 19 from 6PM to 9PM

Washington, D.C. -- On June 19, 2010, Studio H will open Derailed, a solo exhibition featuring well-known aerosol artist Tim Conlon. Derailed pays homage to the artist’s almost twenty-year love affair with freight train graffiti art. In this new exhibition space on Washington’s edgy H Street Corridor, Conlon will showcase a series of new works including life-size aerosol paintings of freight trains; model trains featuring scaled-to-size graffiti in the bright colors and iconic characters for which CON is best known; and contemporary photographs of trains and their environs. The exhibition closes on July 15.

About Derailed Conlon says, “I discovered freight train graffiti as a college kid in Baltimore just as the scene was emerging. As one of the biggest port cities on the East Coast, commercial cargo regularly arrived on large ships in Baltimore Harbor and was transferred to freight trains headed toward big cities like Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles. As a result, train cars were everywhere and as a young artist with a thing for graffiti, it was easy to get hooked on this constantly revolving art gallery. In Derailed, I pay respect to the rolling stock and the craft.”

Conlon posts regular missives about art and culture both local and global on his website and blog, www.conoperative.com.

Rod Glover/ Ungrounded / Studio H

Studio H presents a solo show by:
Rod Glover
“Ungrounded”
April 17 through May 12, 2010
Opening Show: April 17 from 6PM to 9PM
"Diaspora 1"

Rod Glover's paintings simplify the complexities of life without the need for representational depictions. He constructs his work using abstract shapes and color. "Abstract shapes have undeniable power. The orientation or action of a shape evokes conflict, balance, anxiety or harmony. In shapes we perceive ourselves, and they become the archetypes of existence" explains Glover. The shapes in Glover’s work seem to float in space that he imagines to be infinite. The forms are in movement through time. The shapes speak of many things: relationships, solitude, confrontation, awakening, joy, stillness, order or chaos.
Glover's work is influenced by early geometric or reductive abstractionists. Painters such as Kandinsky, Malevich and Moholy-Nagy used geometric shapes to reject illusionist practices in the belief that shapes could convey expressive feelings and ideas without the need for recognizable or objective forms.

Studio H exhibits emerging artists on the cusp of realizing major breakthroughs both in their individual work and in contributing to major contemporary artistic movements. Currently, in 2010, the Spring and Fall showing seasons will connect exceptional DC based artists with their surrounding community. In 2011, Studio H will diversify its pool of talent by featuring the work of national and international artists who also straddle the line between the ordinary and the trendsetting.

Grand Opening of Studio H Gallery and Workshop

Studio H Gallery and Workshop Presents Its Inaugural Exhibit: Sarah Griffin Thibodeaux: Portraits and Landscapes in Oil

October 17 - November 14, 2009

Opening Reception of Exhibit and Studio H Gallery and Workshop

Saturday, October 17, 2009, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Visitors to the exhibition will find a selection of recent oil paintings, painted from life, including portraits, nudes, still lifes and landscapes. The exhibition highlights Thibodeaux's specialty: portraits. She paints her subjects from life using the "alla prima" technique, in which paint is applied directly to the canvas and worked wet in wet. "Portraits and Landscapes in Oil" features the recent works of this New Orleans native who has recently made Capitol Hill her home.

Studio H is located in the burgeoning and energetic H street corridor on the North end of Capitol Hill. This vital urban energy serves as a backdrop and a source of inspiration for Studio H. Founded by Washington, DC native and Capitol Hill resident Philip Hutinet, Studio H Gallery and Workshop will serve DC residents through interdisciplinary artistic, cultural and social events. The gallery at Studio H will feature monthly art exhibits from local artists and expand to show national and international artists from the mid-Atlantic region, Europe and Latin America. Studio H Gallery and Workshop will present lecture series open to the public at no cost. As a working space, Studio H also provides various services including website design, custom illustrations, portrait paintings and public murals.
