Systems Failure
Target Gallery
This is an all media juried exhibition examining the current crises (collapse of world wide financial systems, the mortgage crisis, failing health systems) facing our country and the world, and the plight of the people who most suffer from these failures. The juror is Sarah Tanguy, an independent curator, arts writer, and critic, as well as a curator for the Art in Embassies Program, based in Washington, DC.

Pamela Viola's photographs feature dreamlike, mysterious landscapes that challenge the viewer to see the world in a new and different way. The images in the exhibit all contain wandering roads and spaces, which symbolize the artist's own journey pursuing her career in photography.

Pandora's Box

This exhibition examines the theme of the title Pandora's Box. Artists must create work based on this theme within a 12 inch square box. The work can be contained within the box or it can explode from the box. The juror for this exhibition is Pyramid Atlantic Art Center's Curator and Director of Programs, Landria Shack.

Holiday Open House at the Torpedo Factory Art Center tonight

The annual Holiday Open House at the Torpedo Factory Art Center is Thursday, December 3 from 6-9 pm. 

Food, beverages, music, and holiday shopping opportunities. From 6 to 7:30pm, the Reverie Jazz Trio will perform early jazz standards and forgotten favorites in a style reminiscent of a bygone era. From 7:30 to 9pm, guitarist Jim Stephanson and bassist John Previti will play blues, swing, and jazz inspired tunes.

Reclaimed Exhibition • April 1 - April 26, 2009

Reclaimed is an exhibition that focuses on everyday common objects that are reclaimed, recycled, reinterpreted and transformed into art. From Marcel Duchamp’s “ready-mades” to Robert Rauschenberg’s “combines”, artists have been for years recycling and reclaiming everyday common objects and transforming them into something new and unique. The jurors for this exhibition are gallery owners and collectors, a husband and wife team, Steven and Linda Krensky. The jurors had to review 470 entries and decided on 34 works to be a part of the exhibition.

The Target Gallery, national exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is located on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
The gallery hours are Monday through Sunday 10-6pm and Thursdays 10-8pm.

Steven and Linda Krensky are avid art collectors and gallery owners. They have a contemporary art gallery in Baltimore known as Light Street Gallery. The gallery came about for their need for more space so that they could continue to collect art but also to help promote artists.

2009 Open Exhibition / Call for entries

Entry Fee: $40
Chosen artist will recieve a $500 stipend and a small catalog to accompany the exhibit.

This is an annual exhibition opportunity for an artist to have a solo exhibition in the gallery. This is an Open Call for proposals for an exhibition in the fall of 2009. This call is open to all artists from North America working in all visual media. Proposals for exhibitions by both individuals and groups will be considered. The individual or group associated with the chosen proposal will receive a solo exhibition at the Target Gallery from October 28 - November 29, 2009.

Jurors:
Lia Newman - Director of Programs and Exhibitions at Artspace in Raleigh, NC. There she is responsible for organizing more than thirty exhibitions per year.

Paul So - Visionary founder for both the Hamiltonian Artists and the Hamiltonian Gallery. He is a painter and a physics professor at George Mason University.

Philippa Hughes - Founder of The Pink Line Project, an organization dedicated to building community and transformation through art.
