WPA Announces SELECT 2014: WPA Art Auction Exhibition and Gala

Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) announces the dates for SELECT 2014, its 33rd Annual Art Auction Exhibition and Gala. The curated exhibition will open Thursday, February 27 at 7 pm and will be on view Wednesday through Friday 4 – 11pm, Saturday noon – 5pm, and Sunday noon – 5pm, February 28 through March 21, 2014. The exhibition includes works by 111 emerging and established artists in a variety of media, selected by top curators from the region’s most important institutions, notable independent curators, and the WPA Board of Directors. While the majority of participating artists reside in the Washington/Baltimore region, a number of notable artists from outside the area will have works in the exhibition including Tavares Strachen, representative of The Bahamas to the 2013 Venice Biennale, and Mark di Suvero, world-renowned sculptor and National Medal of Arts recipient.
Saturday, March 22, 2014 marks the 33rd anniversary of the organization’s highly-regarded art gala that includes a curated silent auction of more than 150 art works by top contemporary artists, delicious dinner, open bar, desserts, and DJ-fueled party with artist-designed piñatas. Tickets to the auction gala start at $325 and can be purchased by visiting the WPA website or contacting Mary Resing at mresing@wpadc.org or 202-234-7103 x5. New this year, WPA will be offering a $150 party ticket for guests age 35 and under with admission at 9pm. Bidding on artwork will commence the night of the gala. The event will be held at Artisphere, just two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro station. Free parking with validation is available in the Artisphere garage weekdays after 5pm and all day on weekends. The event is expected to draw more than 700 artists and art enthusiasts.
In advance of the March 22 gala event, WPA will host an exhibition opening reception on February 27 from 7:00 to 10:00 pm with wine & hors d’oeuvres from Peacock Cafe and two Curator Talk events on March 6 and 13 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. These events, as well as the exhibition viewing, are free and open to the public. At each evening of the Curator Talks, a group of curators will discuss their exhibition selections. March 6 will feature talks by Cynthia Connolly, Olivia Kohler-Maga, and Jennifer Scanlan. March 13 will feature talks by Jeffry Cudlin, Brandon Fortune, Megan Rook-Koepsel, and Gregory Volk. The talks offer a unique opportunity to meet the curators and learn more about the works on view.

Pat Goslee
Painting is a healing and holistic act for Pat Goslee; it allows her to internalize exterior pain and pleasure, processing both into compassion and works of art. In her newest series of works on canvas, Pat mines her subconscious and uses her intuition to convey inner realities. Pat’s ideas straddle the disciplines of science, metaphysics and philosophy. She works to create comforting spaces and vibrant energy in each of her works. She often utilizes patterns, including materials dripped in paint and applied directly to the canvas, to create systems that describe how we store information and knowledge. Pat’s paintings are a way of visualizing and transmitting vitality. In her paintings, one sees everything from a beating heart, secret worlds, inner beauty, machines and microscopic organisms. Her palettes are both beautiful and sensitive, serving as a perfect complement to her personal ideology.
Pat is a DC-based painter who received her BFA from the University of Georgia and her MFA from Catholic University. Pat has exhibited in many group and solo shows, most recently at Studio 1469, the National Institutes of Health, the DCAC, McLean Project for the Arts, Hillyer Art Space, Doris Mae Gallery, Addison Ripley Fine Art and the Washington Project for the Arts. Her work is in numerous private and public collections. Pat serves on the Artist Advisory Board at Hillyer Art Space and has curated numerous shows in the DC metropolitan area.
Jessica Van Brakle
Cranes - silent yet strong, masculine yet delicate - dominate the contemplative landscapes of Jessica Van Brakle. An homage to her grandfather’s work in construction, the cranes build networks of intricate, expansive lines. In her newest paintings, Jessica’s landscapes have become more abstract and decorative. On close examination we see the same botanic motifs mixing with new domestic elements. Nature seems to blossom out of the mechanical, resulting in a refined and harmonious whole. The paintings are like fine Wedgwood China; elegant, ornamental and graceful. While the paintings might appear symmetric, Jessica allows the paint to drip and flow, disrupting the apparent perfection. We see a new Rococo influence in her work in addition to her older influences of 19th Century Romantic Landscape painting and photography.

Jessica is a former Hamiltonian fellow, a recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, and in 2008 was a finalist for the Trawick Prize. Her most recent exhibitions include shows at the Arlington Arts Center, McLean Project for the Arts, Bäckerstrasse 4 in Vienna Austria, Hamiltonian Gallery, Countdown Temporary ArtSpace, in Bethesda, and Silber Gallery at Goucher College, as well as numerous group shows in the DC area.

VOLUME is an interactive exhibition created by artist in residence, Maya Freelon Asante. During her collaboration with The Stamp Gallery, Asante will transform the gallery space into a colorful explosion of kinetic tissue paper art. The site-specific installation invites the UMD community to join in on the creation of the artwork; everyone who enters the gallery is welcomed to add to the tissue quilt, which will grow over the course of 5-weeks. The community working together will resonate inside and outside of the gallery space, as the tissue paper swells into the atrium inviting more to come and witness the healing power of ART!
AIR @ Stamp Gallery is a new annual initiative, where the gallery invites local artists to create interactive installations for the duration of six weeks. Maya Freelon Asante is our first participating resident artist.
Maya Freelon Asante is an award‐winning artist who creates unique water-stained colored tissue paper sculptures that resemble quilts, geological forms, and visualizations of human experience. Asante was praised by the International Review of African American Art as a "vibrant, beating assemblage of color." She was selected by Modern Luxury Magazine as Best of the City 2013 and by the Huffington Post's "Black Artists: 30 Contemporary Art Makers Under 40 You Should Know." Maya has exhibited her work nationally and internationally including Paris, Ghana, and US Embassies in Madadagascar, Italy, Jamaica, and Swaziland.

The Stamp Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary art with an emphasis on the work of emerging and mid-career artists. The gallery supports contemporary art that is challenging and/or academically engaging and that addresses broad community and social issues. Through meaningful exhibitions and programming, the gallery offers the University community an outside-of-the-classroom experiential learning opportunity. The gallery space can be used as a laboratory for emerging artists and curators to experiment and work through their ideas, emphasizing the importance of the process to contemporary artistic practice. The gallery serves the public by providing exhibitions of social responsibility and artistic substance, as well as by offering an educational forum in which dialogue between artist and viewer and art and community is encouraged.
The Stamp Gallery is located on the first floor of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union-Center for Campus Life, at the University of Maryland, College Park. McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) presents a special opportunity for young people to work with exhibiting artist, Eric Celarier. During this fun and creative workshop, 9 - 14 year olds will create a woven piece from waste materials, similar to the work of well-known African artist El Anatsui.

With the first exhibits of 2014, The Art League previews an event-packed year in The Art League Gallery. This month is your chance to see what’s to come in their 60th anniversary year!
With “Abstract Expressionism Revisited,” artists are kicking off a year-long series of themed exhibits, inspired by the six decades of art history The Art League Gallery has seen. Each month’s exhibit will explore a different movement, with a contemporary take, with October’s exhibit bringing us up to the present day.
The Art League is located in the landmark Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 North Union Street, on the beautiful Potomac River in historic Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. The gallery is located on the first floor of the TFAC, studio 21. The Art League Gallery is open daily from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm on Sundays. Porter Contemporary gallery in New York, presents “Into the Void”, a solo exhibition of new works by Anne Marchand, Judith Mullen, Roy Wiemann, and Tom Wilson. “Into the Void” presents the works of four artists whose work takes the viewer into another realm. Roy Wiemann, whose paintings often include a focus on framing and presentation includes large and small color field works that embody a sense of abstraction while Tom Wilson’s 3-D works combine elements and mechanics of sound and amplification with the surreal resulting in strange and memorable still lifes. These works combined with Anne Marchand’s paintings which bring energy and movement to the exhibition through excited brush strokes and saturated colors along with Judith Mullen’s hanging sculptures and textured paintings that add elements of nature and familiarity through their sourcings of inspiration.www.portercontemporary.com

WPA is pleased to announce a preview exhibition of SELECT 2014 works chosen by curator Mera Rubell, Co-Founder of the Rubell Family Collection, during her 36 hour studio visit marathon.
Baltimore Artists + WPA + Mera Rubell = LOVE is an exhibition featuring the 25 works chosen by Ms. Rubell to be included in WPA's SELECT 2014 Art Auction Exhibition. The works included in Baltimore Artists + WPA + Mera Rubell = LOVE will be on view February 27 through March 21, 2014 at Artisphere along with almost 100 works selected by other participating curators. All works will be available for purchase via proxy or at the SELECT 2014 gala on March 22, 2014. Proceeds from the sale of artwork are shared equally between WPA and the artist and support WPA's free exhibitions, programs, and support services for artists year round.

South African Voices: A New Generation of Printmakers
Presented by Washington Printmakers Gallery & Vula Amehlo Art Development
Silver Spring, MD —Washington Printmakers Gallery (WPG) and Vula Amehlo Art Development are pleased to present “South African Voices: A New Generation of Printmakers” in January 2014. This invitational exhibition features numerous hand-pulled prints by more than 30 emerging artists from South Africa. Its content seeks to bridge the social, political and economic divides and to create mutual understanding between South Africa and the United States.
Although many of the participating artists have shown in South African solo and group shows, few of them have ever exhibited work outside of their country. This work transcends what is often defined as “African art” – deriving contemporary content from rural and township life or socio-political issues. Its substance defies generalization via diverse styles, techniques and subject matter.
Most whose prints are included in this exhibition come from poverty-stricken remote rural communities or from the more urban townships in and around Johannesburg – areas created under Apartheid’s separate development policy. This talented group of young artists, many of whom have won major printmaking awards, is committed to giving back to their communities despite their own scarce resources.
As they strive to support careers as full-time professional artists, these emerging South African artists are working part-time as gallery staff, teachers for children's art classes, art therapists, or printmaking instructors. Some have developed their own community-based studios or cooperatives, or joined printmaking studios as professional collaborative printers – printing work with William Kentridge, Wim Botha and other well-known South African artists.
Vula Amehlo has organized successful exhibitions in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa – both in traditional gallery spaces and in other environments. As it showcases artists who work in a range of printmaking mediums, Vula Amehlo is a fitting partner for Washington Printmakers Gallery, a cooperative organization that exhibits diverse printmaking techniques. "South African Voices" demonstrates this dynamic juxtaposition of creative thought and approach.
This cross-border collaboration reveals these South African artists as highly collectable world-class printmakers. As noble representatives of post-Apartheid South Africa, significant contributors to the international art landscape, and compelling champions for creative achievement – these poignant voices must be heard.

Three new exhibitions open at VisArts. The show featured in the Kaplan Gallery is "With These Hands," an exhibition of the Robert and Sharon Buchanan art collection. The artwork on display from December 11th through January 18th, include ceramics, prints, sculpture and paintings by artists with local and international reputations. Works range from the emerging to the mature.
The Buchanan collection grew out of Bob and Sharon's profound love and appreciation for art and artists mixed with their own life experiences during a three-year tour in Japan. Sharon, a founder of the art firm, Artists Circle, supports and encourages both regional and national artists and Bob is a stalwart champion of the arts and considers them essential to civic life.
