The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), in collaboration with District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and surrounding communities, is seeking an artist or artist team to work with urban designers, transportation and trail planners, landscape architects, civil engineers and District government employees to create a comprehensive and cohesive plan that visually unifies the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) with artistic enhancements. This artistic driven identity created by the selected artist(s) will be included in a variety of signage and amenities along the trail as well as maps and materials about the trail. This call is open to Mid-Atlantic artists.

Barracks Row Main Street / Call For Artists
Call for Artists to Create a Public Space Mural
The Barracks Row Main Street in Washington, DC seeks an artist or artist team to design, create and install an urban mural for the SE Freeway overpass that divides the south end of 8th Street SE, now known as Barracks Row. The goal of this project is to create a unique landmark that expresses the character of the surrounding neighborhood. The large mural will help draw residents and non-residents for repeated viewings to the area and reinforce a sense of place within this community.
The theme for the art should be reflective of the history of Barracks Row as it connects with the Anacostia River, the Navy Yard, and/or the District’s first commercial corridor along 8th Street. Graphic representations must include a transportation theme but may also incorporate nature scenes, waterfront scenes, commerce scenes, architectural scenes, and/or statuary. Barracks Row is interested in a pictorial representation that will bridge the north-south ends of the street with interesting subject matter in the trompe l’oeil style.

Irvine Contemporary is pleased to present James Marshall (Dalek) in his only 2008 solo exhibition, Overweight.
After many years of thinking about American culture, high and low, James Marshall has developed what he considers his most ambitious series of new works. His new body of work revels in a profusion and hyper-abundance of color and planes of space: the familiar lines and iconic “Space Monkey” references that defined his earlier work are only a starting point for a new series of meditations on the push and pull of forces he sees in contemporary life.
Working largely intuitively and organically, he allows each painting to become a new discovery, and the ongoing series of discoveries that defined his career have now led him far beyond his beginnings when, right out of art school, he found a new way to merge street art, cartoons, Japanese pop, and the energy of the urban punk scene. A major turning point in Marshall’s studio practice was working as Takashi Murakami’s assistant in 2001. He now goes far beyond Murakami’s “superflat” to a kaleidoscopic play of space and color that embodies the competing and conflicting forces in today’s world.

May 15 – 18 2008 
For 4 days and 3 nights “International Art Affairs” will feature work by fine artists from Austria, Australia, Argentina, Belarus, Brazil, Chile, China, Ethiopia, France, India, Iraq, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, USA, and other nations in an exhibition of fine art in a variety of media. This survey of international art celebrates the unique position that Washington enjoys in a very intertwined world.
International art affairs involve artists, agents, collectors, dealers, embassies, cultural attaches, galleries, artist representatives, social and art clubs, art and artist promoters, and other participants. The link between the arts and culture of Washington’s international community and DC’s own art scene is at the core of this international art affair.
“International Art Affairs” is a member of Cultural Tourism DC and a participant in the Passport DC program. The four-day art extravaganza beginning on May 15th and ending on May 18th features browsing, seminars on the subjects of collecting Indian contemporary art and about appreciating art, and social afternoons and evenings. Saturday May 17th features “art seminars” and an evening of “browsing and music” featuring views of the Skate Lab from “The Rat Hole” at 1052 9th Street.
The “Blagden Alley” neighborhood, adjacent to the DC Convention Center on 9th Street is the main site of “International Art Affairs”. 35,000 plus square feet of exhibition space in some of the nooks and crannies are being utilized in the art fair – including the building that was home to “Signal 66” one of the most eclectic DC artist studios and concert halls of its time. “Blagden Alley” is bordered by 9th and 10th streets on the east and west and M and N streets on the north and south.
“International Art Affairs” shows that in Washington, D.C., international art is synonymous with its art scene. The art featured in the fair represents creative impulses from many places including Washington.
Works on exhibit include fine arts, digital, and new media, performance art and site-specific works. Featured artists will include: Billy Colbert, Cecilia Biagini, Chris Tousimis, Eames Demetrios, Fernando Canovas, Fernando Molero, Francie Hester, Gonzalo Lebrija, Ivica Volanska, Joan Belmar, Josefina Canal, Laurent Ziegler, Lourenco Goncalves, Maria Elena Naveillan, Marina Podesta, Najwa Jasim, Pooja Coondoo, Raimundo Rubio, Ren Hui, Ren Rong, Wu De Wu, Xevi Vilaro, Yang Tao, and more.

'Lost Amazon' Opens At Smithsonian’s Museum

Harvard botanist Richard Evan Schultes (1915-2001) spent 12 years in the Colombian Amazon during the 1940s and early 1950s with the goal of exploring territory previously untraveled by any modern naturalist. He spent these years mapping uncharted rivers, living among two dozen Indian tribes and collecting some 25,000 botanical specimens, including 300 new species and more than 2,000 medicinal plants.
The exhibition is based on the biographical essay “The Lost Amazon: The Photographic Journey of Richard Evans Schultes” written and produced by ethnobotanist Wade Davis and founder and director of the Govinda Gallery in Washington, D.C., Chris Murray. Thirty-eight black-and-white photographs by Schultes are on view, as well as his Rolleiflex camera, several herbarium specimens from the museum’s collection that he collected and personal items from the Schultes family.

Kerry James Marshall is known internationally as a painter, photographer, printmaker, and installation artist. The recipient of a MacArthur "genius" award (1997), Marshall speaks about his own work - powerful figure paintings that interpret contemporary African American experience. Marshall's work has been exhibited widely, including at the Venice Biennale (2003) and Documenta (1997 and 2007).
The lecture takes place in the Sant Auditorium and is free for members.

TOUR GATEWAY ARTS DISTRICT STUDIOS ON SATURDAY, MAY 17TH
Gateway Arts District, Prince George’s County, MD - Over 50 artists throughout the municipalities of Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Hyattsville will open their studios to the public on Saturday, May 17th from 12 Noon to 5 PM. Studios are concentrated along a 2.1-mile stretch of the Route 1/Baltimore Avenue/Rhode Island Avenue corridor.
The date will be shared with the annual Mount Rainier Day Festival and Parade, a full day of family fun, food, craft vending and live performances held from 11:00 am -6:00 pm in Mount Rainier, MD, at 34th and Rhode Island Avenue.
The Gateway Arts District Open Studio Tour is a public self-guided tour of professional and home based studios showcasing a variety of mediums---painting, sculpture, glass, photography, mixed media, clay/ceramics, printmaking and craftwork. Most studios are centrally located in the city of Mount Rainier with the Hyattsville Community Artists Alliance exhibiting at the Lustine Showroom as part of Arts District Hyattsville.
Home to many of the DC areas most celebrated artists and studios, which include DC GlassWorks, Red Dirt Studio, The Washington Glass School and Studio, FLUX, and the Quixote Center Gallery the arts district is a veritable hot spot of highly acclaimed artists that produce works that are exhibited and collected nationally and internationally. Artists include Margaret Boozer, Tim Tate, Ellyn Weiss, Laurel Lukaszewski, David D’Orio, Crisley McCarson, Kyan Bishop, Yvon Fleurival and many more.
A highlight of the tour includes the installation and printmaking show, Michael B. Platt: Lost and Found at the H & F Fine Arts Gallery. A native Washingtonian whose works are in collections at the Corcoran Gallery, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and the Library of Congress, Platt often focuses on the history of marginalized populations of Africa and the African Diaspora. A collaborative effort with poet Carol Beane, Lost and Found is set against the backdrop of American Slavery and the implications of Hurricane Katrina.
Drop in on classes and demonstrations at performing arts venues—World Arts Focus at Joe’s Movement Emporium, Alafia Professional Dance Space, and Artmosphere Digital Arts Café.

I Rent myself to Dream travels to the Mexican Cultural Institute after a successful run at the sister Institute in Montreal, Quebec. Alvaro Santiago is a visual artist who shows unique command of various forms, including painting, ceramic, drawing, engraving, woodcarving and sculpture. His works characterized by energetic lines and fierce color. Santiago did not need to leave his natal region of Oaxaca in order to consolidate his audacious dialog in which forms are shaped with the use of various materials that lead him to create unseen universes. He has maintained a constant presence in Mexico and abroad, where his work has been shown in galleries, museums, collective and individual shows.

“Karen Hubacher’s paintings are characterized by their organized structures and highly textured surfaces. Evocative without being specific, her abstract works establish a sense of place –– familiar, yet not quite tangible. The compositions reflect mental proceses of assembling components into logical wholes, resolving puzzles and achieving resolution.”

Call to Artists/ EMPTY BOWLS: Capital Area Food Bank
EMPTY BOWLS: Capital Area Food Bank
House of Artistry is pleased to announce the first "Empty Bowls" project in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) of Washington DC.
"Our goal for the first year event is to feed 10,000 people for one day."
What is Empty Bowls?
The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple. Artists create artistic bowls, then our guests are served a meal of soup or salad, bread and beverage using the Art Bowl they have purchased for a minimum donation of 75 meals = $25.
Guests keep their Art Bowl as a reminder that there are always Empty Bowls in the world that need to be filled. All proceeds from the sale of the Art Bowls go directly to the CAFB.
WHERE
DLA Piper has graciously donated the use of the lobby in their incredible new building located at 500 8th Street NW in Washington DC. The building is in the heart of Penn Quarter, one block from the Verizon Center, Portrait Gallery, across the street from the Monaco Hotel with easy access to Gallery Place and Navy Memorial metro stations on the Red, Green and Yellow line.
WHEN
We have an unconfirmed date of October 9th from 11:30am to 2:30pm.

Artists are constantly being asked to donate their artwork and do so all the time.
For this event artists donating 8 or more bowls will be invited to bring an original piece of artwork, of their choice, for sale during the Empty Bowls luncheon. The artist will receive a 50% commission and the CAFB will receive a 50% donation.
COLLECTORS CIRCLE
I will be approaching artists for artwork to be included in a special "Collectors Circle Table". Artists will receive 50% commission and 50% will go to the CAFB.
ARTWORK DEADLINE
Artwork will be delivered to House of Artisty or picked up by Saturday, October 2nd or Sunday, October 3rd.

Invitation for artist-only sneak preview, Art Anonymous
The Corcoran cancelled its after party for Art Anonymous Fundraiser and extends an invitation to artists for a sneak preview on May 10, from 4pm - 5pm sharp in Gallery 31 to mingle with each other, share some wine, and get a preview of the show before the works go on sale (these works are also up now, and can be viewed in Gallery 31 until 9pm tonight, and from 10am – 5pm tomorrow and Saturday). Please remember to use the New York Avenue entrance.
Also note that the registration for the Art Anonymous sale from 6pm – 8pm is now closed, and no walk-ins will be allowed. There is only space for registered ticket holders.

Miami-based artist Jen Stark joins Civilian for her first solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition will include her signature intricate cut-paper sculptures; colorful, trippy line drawings; video animation; a site-specific mural made for Civilian; and a million other things.
