Alexandria Art Market opening day tomorrow, Saturday, May 7th

Del Ray Artisans (DRA) announces its 2nd season of The Alexandria Art Market. The market will be held in the Nicholas A. Colasanto Park, adjoining the Del Ray Artisans gallery at 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA (corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Mount Vernon Avenue). This is a rain or shine event and is free and open to the public.
A variety of original artwork from over 25 artists will be displayed for sale including, but not limited to, painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, and glasswork.
The grand opening festivities for the 2nd season will be on May 7, 2011 will include music by The Kate Moran Band!
Market Creator and Coordinator Kimberley Bush is so pleased that last year’s art market was so successful that she was able to add an additional month which is May and increased the number of artists. She continues to believe that the DRA artists and artisans would benefit from consistent exposure to the art world. This event will be another opportunity and a perfect venue to connect with the community.

Where we live and how we go about our lives are intertwined. This book helps understand a whole vision of the rebirth of cities. The following book review appears in Traditional Building Magazine and is reprinted with permission of the author.
A Challenge to Today's Urbanists

From the moment Dhiru Thadani's book, The Language of Towns & Cities: A Visual Dictionary, landed on my desk, I have been enjoying it immensely and making use of it regularly. It really did 'land' there – all 804 pages and 8 pounds, 11.5 ounces of it. The book is nothing short of a life's work, with an inspiring forward by Leon Krier, and an introduction by Andrés Duany. The lavish praise it has received thus far is well deserved. So my question for my fellow practitioners is: Now what?
This book is very well organized for simple and easy use. The 'encyclopedic' format allows it to serve as a quick research guide (how many times do you recall paging through the index of Hegemann and Peets' American Vitruvius?) with clear illustrations, photographs and descriptions of towns and cities. It is a pleasure to have access to such a wealth of basic, practical, and even unexpected information within a single book.
The book is organized into 544 comprehensive entries that include: the fun: "Noise and Nostalgia;" the details: "Site Walls" and "Signage;" the practical: "Recycling" and "Roof Forms;" and the basics: "Regulating Plans" and "Rail Transit." Beyond practice-based information, there is also historical information on some of our favorite people in the profession including Jefferson and Jacobs, and documentation of some of our favorite cities like Paris and Rome (what a nice reminder of my semester abroad!).
This book illustrates how the field of urbanism has matured in recent decades. Prior to World War II, there were many books of this type. In the years following the war, symmetrical with a lack of interest in city-building, effective books on urbanism disappeared as well. In the last two decades, urbanists have restored their thirst for documentation and the dissemination of information by producing precedent-based, practical books again.
However, because effective master planning takes years to implement, and because the rebirth of cities has just begun over the past two decades, many recent books in the field are largely comprised of visions for the future. Dhiru's book is especially refreshing because it includes a great body of recently built work, which takes the manual beyond theory and makes it valuable to urban design practitioners working with even the most adventurous clients.
Urban design practitioners endeavor to restore urban environments in the face of incredible obstacles. Design proposals weave competing political, social, aesthetic, financial and environmental interests into a seamless fabric. The best solutions to design challenges are often bold, and having the appropriate information on hand at the right moment is critical to moving forward. We rely on precedent examples to learn, leverage, educate and eventually implement these bold solutions. This book will prove to be an outstanding tool at the core of these efforts.
As I page through the book over and over again, I am reminded of a quote in the introduction to Charles Correa's book Housing and Urbanisation: "As Jaque Robertson has so brilliantly pointed out, you can't design a spare part without understanding what the machine should look like, and you can't conceptualise the overall machine if you can't design a spare part – and that American downtowns (being imported indiscriminately all around the world) is just a bunch of spare parts with no one responsible for the whole machine."
It is true: here in the United States, we are living amongst a bunch of spare parts. And here, in this book, we have a wonderful set of tools to help us understand the machine. Dhiru has provided us with a challenge to use this document to its best effect. So, thank you to Dhiru and your colleagues. The rest is up to us. TB

Irvine Contemporary announces Dataklysmos,
an exhibition of new multimedia sculptures by [dNASAb]. [dNASAb], who
goes by "Disney," is a Brooklyn-based artist who constructs complex,
multidimensional works that visualize the world of data and the
materiality of digital technology in new ways. In the age of hybrid
media, the artist has created a name as an acronym for
"Disney-NASA-Borg," and works in multidimensional sculptures as a
deconstruction of what he sees as the "Disneyfication" of our
post-digital imagination. Dataklysmos presents another
visualization of our datasphere in the context of Washington, DC, a
region that is home to Internet architecture and major connecting nodes
for global Internet data traffic.

Jenny Holzer's powerful text-based work has enlivened public spaces for nearly thirty-five years. Born in 1950 in Gallipolis, Ohio, Holzerholds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and honorary doctorates, including those from Williams College (2000), the New School (2005), and Smith College (2009). In 1977, while enrolled in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program, she began work on her breakthrough Truisms. A series of witty and salient aphorisms that she composed and printed on posters, these works were distributed anonymously in the urban environment. They have subsequently appeared on materials as diverse as billboards, marble benches, and what have become the best known of her media, LED signs. In 1990, Holzer was the first woman to have a solo presentation in the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, for which she was awarded the Golden Lion. She stopped writing her own texts in 2001, choosing instead to borrow language from writers, philosophers, poets, and political figures for such works as her large-scale projections on the sides of buildings and landscapes. Since 2004, she has mined declassified government documents for the series Redaction Paintings. In 2010, Holzer gave the Gallery six Redaction Paintings, each depicting the censored handprint of an American soldier accused of committing crime in Iraq. Holzer lives and works in New York.

ROOTS Fest 2011 in West Baltimore
For five days in June, tens of thousands of people will make history at ROOTS Fest, an empowering national arts celebration in West Baltimore. Joined by nationally-renowned artists and performers, the West Baltimore community will take over the 52 acres of green space that sits atop the Highway to Nowhere, and fill it with new life, color and music. The National Learning Exchange, taking place at Coppin State University on the first three days of the festival, will be a discussion on community strength and sustaining a movement for art and culture. The festival will serve as an example for other communities around the country who face the same challenges as West Baltimore. NETWORK is a show about interconnectedness, the underlying and overlaid systems that link us socially, digitally, intellectually, physically and aesthetically. As a noun, networking is "interacting with other people to exchange information and develop contacts, esp. to further one's career : the skills of networking, bargaining, and negotiation"., an especially apt description of the role galleries play in their work with artists, collectors and museums.
With references to social media, broadcast stations, transportation and personal relationships, Network, as its name suggests, provides a framework and linkage for the disparate works presented in this exhibition. From new prints by Suzanne Caporael, and Laura Owens, to a suite of prints by Chris Martin, whose comprehensive exhibition opens this Summer at the Corcoran Gallery, from challenging larger scaled multiples by Donald Baechler and Ray Charles White to recently completed prints by Dan Treado, this exhibition provides a visually complex array of two dimensional media. Included works by Carol Goldberg Brown, Kevin Kepple and Amy Lin suggest sophisticated artist imagined systems. Photographer Frank Hallam Day offers a literal interpretation of the Network theme. Kay Jackson, Julie Wolfe and Jeffrey Smith use nature as the stepping off point for their paintings. And the white backgrounds of works by Isabel Manalo and Jackie Battenfield are the lattice whereon each builds their art.

George Ellery Hale: A Visionary for the 21st Century

A Lecture by Thomas Burnett
Thomas Burnett, Mirzayan Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences, will lecture on Academy member George Ellery Hale's vision for the NAS in the 21st century. Hale (1868 - 1938) took the leading role in developing the concept, design, endowment, and decor of the NAS building on Constitution Avenue, guiding it to completion in 1924. Known for his invention of the spectroheliograph, Hale also planned, built, and directed two of the greatest astronomical observatories in the world. In 1914, he was named one of the twelve greatest scientists in the United States. In addition to his role as a leading researcher, he was able to integrate science and society. Hale's vision for the National Academy of Sciences is as relevant today as when he developed it.

Largest Regional Fine Arts Festival Announces 20th Anniversary Weekend Celebration
Art lovers of all ages will fill the streets in May when the 20th Annual Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival returns to the Reston Town Center the weekend of May 21 & 22, 2011. Non-profit art center the Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) whose mission is to enrich individual and community life by promoting involvement and excellence in the visual arts, is the producer of the largest, top-rated annual art festival in the Washington Metropolitan area. The juried festival attracts over 50,000 patrons from across the region and provides a personal, interactive experience to view, purchase, and experience art directly from the unique and talented artists featured.
The popular festival celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year will offer plenty to see, taste, hear and do - from hand crafted, one of a kind artwork, a host of live musical and visual performance arts, artist demonstrations, acclaimed children’s activities, and superb food and refreshments. Artist categories include oil, acrylic, watercolor painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, jewelry, metal, textiles, leather, wood furniture, photography and ceramics. Throughout the weekend, there will be a variety of special activities that will celebrate this major anniversary for festival visitors to enjoy.
“The 20th Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival promises to be the best ever," said John Alciati, President & CEO of GRACE. "In addition to 200-plus exhibiting artists, this year’s festival will include a variety of events honoring artists, volunteers, patrons, and arts and cultural groups and other organizations who were instrumental to the festival’s success over the past 20 years.”
The festival is free and open to the public however a voluntary donation of $10 to GRACE at the events ArtCarts, individuals will receive a $10 gift certificate to dine at participating Reston Town Center restaurants. Donation proceeds benefit year round educational and outreach programs, including Art in the Schools and Explore More! Programs produced by GRACE.
GRACE will kick off the weekend festivities with a Preview Night Party on Friday, May 20 from 7-10 p.m. for sponsors, media, donors and the local art lovers. The exciting art-filled evening features a fine art auction and the opportunity for first choice art purchases from award winning artists.

Transformer Receives the Mayor's Arts Award for Excellence in Artistic Discipline!

Transformer was awarded the Mayor's Arts Award for Excellence in an Artistic Discipline on Wednesday evening April 20, 2011 as part of a ceremony at the Kennedy Center to celebrate the arts in our nation's capital. The Mayor's Arts Awards are the most prestigious honors conferred by the city on individual artists, organizations, and patrons of the arts. Each year, the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities invites citizens to nominate these outstanding artists and arts organizations.
"I am honored to accept this award for Transformer on behalf of all the many artists we have worked with since our inception in 2002. We share our thanks for the award with them, as well as with the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities for their continued support, and our amazing community of audience, donors, and foundation sponsors for helping to make our work a reality!" states Victoria Reis, Transformer's co-Founder, and Executive & Artistic Director.

The show LIMINAL LIGHT at Project 4 Gallery features artists who explore various means of representing reality and the boundaries beyond, bringing the viewer to the visual realm of the sublime. Using graphite, India ink, smoke, and photo collage the artists exploit the duality between black and white to reveal the spectrum of infinite shades of gray.
The featured artists Matt Ballard, Mayme Donsker, Christine Gray, Loie Hollowell, and Ander Mikalson each explore light and dark with various monochromatic media used both traditionally and expansively. The light implied or described in these works intensifies, wanes, or pulses using simple means of production. Although each artist focuses on different subjects, their work is unified by a desire to question notions of reality.
