Leslie Nolan's show, Outliers, features a riot of striking color with graphic punch to make personal contemporary imagery. Anything but tame, her figures convey raw emotion. “I'll do anything to create a mood,” says Nolan, skewing the form of the figure by abstracting features and using pulsating color.

(Bethesda, MD) – The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites local artists to submit work to the 10th annual Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards. This juried art competition awards $14,000 in prizes to four selected winners. The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 6, 2012. Up to 10 finalists will be chosen to display their work at Bethesda’s Gallery B in September.
The competition will be juried by Dawn Gavin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art, College of Arts and Humanities, University of Maryland; Barbara Kelly Gordon, Associate Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and N. Elizabeth Schlatter, Director and Curator of Exhibitions at the University of Richmond Museums, Virginia.

Artist Michael Enn Sirvet opens at Adlon Design

Adlon Design announces an installation of Artist Michael Enn Sirvet at their Georgetown venue. Sirvet has created new works and pairs them with select sculptures of metal, polymers, wood, and light.
Adlon Design will launch Sirvet’s contemporary design pieces, which are functional sculpture in their own right. The partnership was established when the Adlon design team and Sirvet came together to create a one-of- kind sculptural wall for a private residence.
Sirvet describes his work as a "collision between industrial precision and natural organic forms." Across the different aspects of Sirvet's work, from sculpture to contemporary craft and design, his style is connected. The works are wedded by an interpretation of transformation as seen in the natural world and the impact of mankind. The artist turns metal into flame and polymers into light, causing the viewer to consider alternative form.

Everyday, for 24 years, Margaret Kennedy paints in her Brushmark Studio in the quiet town of Burkittsville, Md. The space is chock a block full of canvases whose origin is, as she explains, “…entirely intuitive. It is centered, then comes around like a circle – like meditation.”Sponsored by Stages Premier Realtors, this exhibition marks the third in the series: “Art from the Exurbs” featuring works from beyond the beltway.
Having spent her time in NYC during the 1950’s, she considers herself a 2nd generation abstract expressionist. Schooled in printmaking, followed by 15 years as a leaded stained glass artist, Kennedy completed a Master of Divinity from Indiana University. She then became a soup kitchen pastor by day and an emergent painter at night. Eventually, the painter won out.
These revolving exhibitions offer an innovative way to support the arts emphasizes Anthony Bozzi, Vice President of Operations:
We wanted to stay true to the building’s current usage as art galleries, as well as contribute to the arts community, by inviting artists to exhibit in the former art gallery.All exhibitions are open to the public. Holtry's paintings depict animals that few people appreciate, such as hyenas, insects, and rats. Often wondering why is it that people advocate equality between humans, yet so freely discriminate in our opinions of animals, her work addresses our prejudicial attitudes toward these animals.
Holtry's inspiration also comes from an ongoing interest in the decorative arts and textiles. Toile de Jouy mimics the style of historic toile de jouy, a type of fabric that originated in France in the late eighteenth century depicting a myriad of pastoral scenes-such as people fishing, sitting by a lake, farming, or children playing.
Elizabeth Holtry's exhibition Toile de Jouy is on view at Hillyer Art Space now through the end of February.

From the pale green corkscrew tendril of vine depicting hope and promise to a beetle-chewed leaf edge that portends death and decay, contemporary botanical artists employ both art and technical mastery in their work. The Garden Path illustrates a story of consistency and change in our world through plants. With references ranging from wild spaces, to historic gardens, to contemporary urban "greenspaces", this show uses botanical art to help us understand our place in the world.
The Garden Path contains works by members of the Botanical Art Society of the National Capital Region (BASNCR), and is curated by botanical artist Marcia DeWitt.
Gallery Talk with Karen Coleman: The Path of Botanic Art

Karen Coleman, teacher at the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art & Illustration, will give an illustrated overview of the evolution of botanical art, use the works in the show as examples, and discuss inspiration and process in her own work. Free.
