Green Chalk Contemporary is pleased to announce “GCC/1”, the inaugural exhibition at its new space at 616 Lighthouse Avenue, New Monterey, CA. The exhibition opens on Saturday, September 7, 2013, with a reception at the gallery from 6 - 8 pm. On display will be a selection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photogrpahy and works on paper-- dynamic works that resound with content and tension. The exhibition will be on view through October 5, 2013.

Artists include Jerry Takigawa, Farley Gwazda, Sharron Antholt, Tom Nakashima, Rob Barnard, Raimundo Rubio, Tamiko Kawata, Laurel Farrin, Francie Hester, Ruth Bolduan, Lisa Solomon, Anne Marchand, Kristin Casaletto, William Willis, Rebecca Clark, Richard Whittaker and Indira Morre.

Green Chalk Contemporary specializes in painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and photography. The gallery represents and champions artists from diverse cultures whose work not only illuminates important concepts and beliefs, but also expands our language of aesthetic expression.

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Capitol Arts Network, the Washington area’s fastest-growing organization for professional and emerging artists, announces its August show, a juried exhibition titled “Abstraction at its Best,” from Aug. 2 - 24, 2013 at the new Capitol Arts Network gallery in Rockville, MD. The abstract work of acclaimed Metro DC area artist Anne Marchand will be featured in the front half of the gallery for this exhibit.

“This exhibit is open to photography, painting, and mixed media, will focus on form, color, line and mark-making and the unique language of the visual,” said Capitol Arts Network Executive Director Judith HeartSong in announcing the event.  

The Capitol Arts Network’s Rockville facility features studio space for more than 38 artists plus classrooms, work and meeting areas and gallery and exhibition space where artists can work individually or side-by-side in a collaborative community setting. The center is conveniently located near Rockville’s Twinbook Metro station, in Montgomery County’s developing “Twinbrook Arts Zone,” which also includes the Washington School of Photography in their shared building.

Capitol Arts Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating a community environment in which established and emerging artists from across the Washington, D.C., region can come together to work, develop and share resources, expertise, marketing opportunities and community outreach. International Salvadoran-American Artist Karlisima opens new Art Show ‘Green Cathedrals: Trees, Roots and Branches.'

Washington, D.C. – Award-winning, International Salvadoran-American Artist Karlisima will present her art show entitled, Green Cathedrals:  Trees, Roots and Branches at the Potter's House Art Gallery, Washington D.C. from now until August 2nd, 2013.  Two events will be held to meet the artist on July 20 and July 27 at 4:00 pm at the Potter’s House.
Karlisima's paintings are reminiscent of stained glass windows and mosaics infused with deep spiritual meaning, intertwining the worlds of the real and the surreal.  She focuses primarily on symbols of Mother Nature and her native Mayan roots. An interest in the symbolic meaning of votive candles, which she has seen in medieval and renaissance European cathedrals, is also present in her work.  Her paintings are alive with bright, expressive colors. The strong contrasts and bold brushstrokes remind one of impressionist painters and the surrealist work of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

“This exhibition is the culmination of many months of intense work, inspired by the beauty of the trees and the parks of the Adams Morgan neighborhood,” says Karlisima.

The exhibition is free and open to the public from now until August 2nd, 2013. 


To view Karlisima’s paintings is to enter an extraordinary world of fantasy, mystery, magic and spirituality.  Whether still-life or landscape, Karlisima’s art tells a story and has an abstract quality that transcends the real, the mundane and the ordinary.  Her paintings are metaphors for the inner light that dwells within each individual soul.

Karlisima was born in El Salvador and moved to the USA with her family at the age of 14, and has been living in Washington D.C. since 1992, when she graduated with a major in painting from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.  She also studied French in France in 1989 and is now fluent in five languages. Her art is influenced by memories of her childhood in El Salvador, her experiences in the US, and her trips to France and Europe beginning at 19, and most recently, Paris and the Holy Land:  Israel and Palestine. Her paintings hang in private collections around the world and two of her self-portraits are part of the Permanent Collection of the International Museum of Women in San Francisco. She exhibited her art in London and Berlin in 2005 and 2006.

On August 7, 2012, she dedicated The Mama Ayesha’s Restaurant Presidential Mural to the public and to President Obama.  The mural, 60 x 24 feet, is located at 1969 Calvert Street NW, and is a tourist destination in the Nation’s Capital, known as “DC’s Biggest Postcard On A Wall.”  It can be found on PBS, Wikipedia, D.C. Tourism Books, and Norway’s Textbooks to teach U.S. History.

Karlísima painted the Potter’s House Mural and the Highland’s Café’s Mural at 4706 14th St. NW, and has been teaching art to children at the Festival Center, 1640 Columbia Rd NW. Adams Morgan.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA— Summer in Paris, Portrait Paintings by Lilianne Milgrom, opens July 3, 2013 at Crossroads Gallery at Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads and closes August 21. Paris-born artist Lilianne Milgrom brings Paris to the Washington area this summer with a stunning new series of eye-catching contemporary portraits. Throughout history, artists have documented their surroundings, their family and friends. While acknowledging the rich legacy of portraiture, artist Lilianne Milgrom’s new portrait series, Summer in Paris, firmly establishes the present moment. Her beautifully executed portraits evoke the kind of understated contemplation that has become rare in contemporary painting. Each painting is an invitation to enter a private world, an intimate scene or a piercing look. We are fleeting observers, tempted to stay and linger, pondering the nature of the sitters and their state of mind. Milgrom’s realistic style never tips over into photographic reproduction. These are paintings in which we feel the presence of the artist’s hand. Summer in Paris allows us to savor life’s quieter moments and reminds us of the pleasure found in beauty and the uniqueness of every member of the human race.

Lilianne Milgrom readily identifies with Picasso's description of painting as "just another way of keeping a diary." She further explains: “My recent portrait works are just that – a visual diary of the men, women and children with whom I crossed paths during my extended stays in Paris over the last two years. I was inspired to capture the ‘je ne sais quoi’ so inherent in Parisian style. What I discovered was that despite the quintessential Parisian appearance of my subjects, they ultimately represent a readily identifiable spectrum of universal personalities.”

Programming for this exhibition includes an artist talk and reception on Saturday, July 13, from 6:45 – 8:15 p.m. at which time accordionist Nancy Leonard will play lively French music and Lilianne Milgrom will speak at 7:15 p.m.

On Thursday, July 18 at 7:00 p.m. Professor Marion Deshmukh, from George Mason University, will give a lecture on the French Impressionism and the 19th Century.

Washington Studio School will have a number of costumed models and some very dynamic still lifes set up throughout the building, and they have paper, charcoal, and erasers available which was generously donated for this event by Utrecht.  There will be food and drinks as well.

Do You Feel What I See?

May 18, 2013 – June 30, 2013 Calvin Coleman Artist’s Talk: June 23, 2013 2:00 – 4:00 pm Going against proper gallery etiquette, Calvin Coleman invites you to touch the textured surfaces of his paintings. During the Artist’s Talk, Calvin will discuss his unique process and experience as a seeing artist who has created a series of paintings for the blind and visually impaired. The artist’s statement, titles and wall text describing the paintings are written in Braille and hang throughout the gallery space. The exhibition runs through Sunday, June 30, 2013. In a world where touch is forbidden, artist Calvin Coleman’s exhibition “Do You Feel What I See?”invites the blind and visually impaired to experience his paintings with their hands. For the seeing, they too may engage with his work in a way that is considered taboo and against proper gallery etiquette, by closing their eyes and running their fingers across the painterly surfaces. Corcoran Celebrates WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY: Images of Armed Conflict and its Aftermath with Special Programming

This summer, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design, in conjunction with the landmark photographic exhibition WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY: Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath, presents a series of programs that enable visitors to engage with the exhibition on a personal level.

Programs, including Art Response Family Workshops; Gallery Talks; and a Visual Dialogue on Conflict from photographer Louie Palu, are designed to enrich and expand on many themes and stories about life during wartime, and encourage the personal reflection befitting of the show's emotional nature.

Additionally, on July 6, the Corcoran will mark the public opening of WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY with a FREE day of programs and workshops themed to the exhibition. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a number of events, including a workshop conducted by the Veterans Oral History Project of the Library of Congress, a film screening, and a children's workshop booth sponsored by Tragedy Assistance Programs for Survivors. A military band will be on hand to add to the spirit of the festivities. Admission is FREE and open to the public.

PAINTING THE UNIVERSE AS POETRY

ARTIST ANNE MARCHAND TO SHOW AT BLACKROCK

Washington, DC Artist Anne Marchand joins Mike Shaffer and Mark Sharp for the three person show curated by Gallery Director Kimberly Marshall at BlackRock Center for the Arts from June 5 - 28, 2013. An artist reception is planned for Saturday, June 8, from 5:30 - 7:30pm. You and your guests are invited.

Marchand’s explosion of color is what most viewers see first, but her works have an otherworldly aspect as if the viewer can jump in and connect. Marchand is exploring science and astronomy and where it intersects with mythology through her work. The layers of color are like poetry, which can be examined for multiple viewpoints and meaning.

“I am particularly interested in how the sciences and astronomy relate to mythology and spirituality. These are the myths that Joseph Campbell calls metaphor as myth and religion,” says Marchand. Through her own research, reading and "seeing" through the eyes of Hubble, she connects back to earth and how we are in the midst of creating a new planetary mythology based on oneness. “Over the last decade, I have been particularly interested in Sufi poetry and exploring language in paint,” says Marchand.

For the show, Marchand has selected three large works and several smaller pieces. The large works are “Renewal,” "Monde Matériel" and "a priori," all are 72x72 In., acrylic and mixed media on canvas. “These works address mythology and metaphor as a way to illicit an epiphany within the human being as to the wonder and oneness of the universe,” says Marchand.

About the Artist:
Anne Marchand is a Washington, DC based artist. She holds Fine Arts Degrees from the University of Georgia and Auburn University. Her works have been included in national and regional exhibitions and featured in 100 Artists of the Mid-Atlantic Book, Studio Visit Magazine and American Art Collector. Schiffer will feature her work in Artist Studios and Homes in 2014. Porter Contemporary represents her work in New York. Anne has received grants for her work, notably an Artist Fellowship from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation residency grant to Mexico. She has taught painting and drawing at Mt. Vernon College’s School of Art and Design and was visiting artist with the University of Illinois, School of Architecture study abroad program. Her work is featured in corporate and private collections in the United States.

Charcoal, ink, acrylic, photography and animal skulls are simply the beginning of the story to Jennifer Murray's second solo exhibition at Porter Contemporary. Murray imagines a totemic tribute to the power of mythology rooted in nature through a digital and technical lens. Murray will explore the ways in which we experience the power of the natural world using the color white in its varied patterns as the basis for inter-connectivity.
