For more than twenty years Addison/Ripley Fine Art has regularly presented work by Washington artist, John Morrell. The work in "Here and Then" presents vistas from New York, Rhode Island, Maine, Washington, DC, Canada and France in climates ranging from high summer to frigid mid-winter. The effects of light and wind, shadow and reflection are often the subjects of these paintings. Subtle tones and augmented ones play on Morrell's canvases and works on paper.  These new works are at once familiar and surprisingly fresh; they explore the lessons of the great American landscape painters and, at the same time, feel rooted firmly in the present.

The painter's very successful look at landscape icons like Niagara Falls and the Washington, DC skylines has been applauded and recognized for some time. However, it is his ability to render the familiar new and the unfamiliar enticing that marks him as a consummate master of his craft, keenly observing and carefully composing for maximum effect. Studies for many of the larger paintings are included in this exhibition, offering significant insight into the artist's process, a window into the intricate layering that is utilized in the final works.

Mr. Morrell is presently the Chair of the Art and Art History Department at Georgetown University where he has taught for many years and it is notable that his studio at the University looks out over some of the landscape that has intrigued him for much of his career. He has work in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the State Department, the United States Postal Museum and Georgetown University.

Addison/Ripley Fine Art presents a selection of new works by Washington artist, Amy Lin.

The delicate but dynamic work of Amy Lin is as sophisticated as it is fresh. Despite their apparent mechanical precision, Ms. Lin's drawings are made by hand in colored pencil and take on, literally, a life of their own, suggesting an order that might be seen in scientific visualization such as cells or moleculesor DNA modeling. As graceful as dance notation, the artist's drawings have an intelligence about them that implies natural forces. The colored pencil markings float, perfectly balanced in open, white, not negative space. They sparkle with life, with elegance and beauty and a rhythm of their own.

Ms. Lin's work finds common cause with our contemporary interest in genetics, technology, physics and even astronomy while maintaining a very human quality that celebrates the imperfect and indefinable qualities of art.  One is able to experience this work on several levels: emotional, cerebral, obsessive, and lyrical.  Drawn without a specific plan in mind, the work develops organically, yielding repetitions that range from playful to meditative to joyous, each mark suggesting the next, the finished product a remarkable surprise.

Addison Ripley presents Wolf Kahn

Born in Germany, Wolf Kahn has lived in the United States since 1940. He began his studies in art under abstract painter Hans Hofmann, becoming his assistant, after which he received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Chicago. Kahn's career has continued to flourish. He has received such honors as a Fulbright Scholarship, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and an Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Major Museums including the National Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts are just a few of the prestigious institutions around the country that have Kahn works in their permanent collections. Three books about the artist's work have been published, a monograph about Kahn's paintings in 1996,  a book dedicated to his pastel work in 2000, and most recently, Wolf Kahn's America, which was published in 2003.

Addison/Ripley Fine Art's spring 2009 exhibition will feature the paintings and works on paper by Charlottesville, VA, artist John Borden Evans. Utilizing his surroundings, which includes farmhouses, rural landscapes and animals as inspiration, John translates the imagery into dense, multi-layered works of art. Underpaintings of colors, shapes, and words often form the basis for these whimsical yet sophisticated pastoral scenes of both sun-filled days and glowing starry nights.

Berlin Mitte: Lost Images

Berlin Mitte: Lost Images explores the architectural cityscape of East Berlin, Germany. Having grown up in a divided Berlin, Day returned in 1996 after the fall of the Berlin Wall to photograph the city's former Communist sector. He revisits locations of his childhood and documents the changes in the urban and industrial landscapes during a period of redevelopment. The exhibit highlights a selection of photographs chosen by the Washington City Paper as the Photography Exhibit of the Year in 2004.

Edith Kuhnle: New Work

December 6 , 2008 - January 10, 2009

Artist, Edith Kuhnle exhibits in many galleries including ones in London, North Carolina, and Washington, DC. Kuhnle has work in numerous collections including the American Chancery in London and American Embassies in Peru and Columbia. She has been granted such awards as a Kreeger Purchase Award, DC Commission of the Arts Purchase Award, and a Commission for Regan National Airport. In addition she participated in an exhibition, "Outward Bound: American Art at the Brink of the Twenty-First Century," which traveled throughout Asia.
