CITY Gallery Presents its Annual All Associates Show

City Gallery announces its first annual all associates show. 

June 27 through July 28, 2010. 
Opening reception: Saturday, July 10 from 6-9pm.  

The group show will feature the latest work of Marilyn Christiano, Sheryl Denbo, Will Fleishell, Sherill Anne Gross, Tara Hamilton, Martha Huizenga, Tom Kenyon, Liz Lescault, Anne Oman, Sarah Porter, Tom Pullin, Pam Rogers, Lynne Mallonee Schlimm and Cissy web. Ceramic sculpture, oil painting, watercolor, photography, prints and multimedia art will be on display.

City Gallery Presents “Out at Night”

“Out at Night” will hang from June 5-27, 2010.
City Gallery will host an opening reception on June 5 from 6-9pm.


City Gallery presents the work of noted Hill photographer, Gayle Krughoff in a show entitled “Out at Night.” About this show Krughoff says, "I am drawn to photographing at night, or early morning, or dusk—when the absence of light can add mystery to what is already beautiful. A scene can be trasformed by the minimal light that is available. And I enjoy the quiet and being removed from the day-to-day that night-time offers.”

Krughoff has been a professional photogapher in Washington, D.C. for nearly thirty years, specializing
in children, families, weddings, politicos and the occasional entertainment glitterati. Her photographs
have appeared in numerous publications. She is a long-time member of the Capitol Hill Art League and has served on its board and as its chair. Krughoff is a frequent exhibitor in juried shows on the Hill and other galleries throughout the Washington, D.C. area. She studied at the Maine Photographic Workshops, Art New England, Photoworks in Glen Echo and the Smithsonian.

City Gallery Presents Light and Allusion

“Light and Allusion” Nancy Donnelly and Jill Finsen

 Opening reception: Saturday, May 1, 6:00–9:00 PM

City Gallery’s May exhibition “Light and Allusion” showcases Nancy Donnelly’s elegant glass art and Jill Finsen’s whimsically primitive paintings executed in oil paint.

The opening reception with the artists is Saturday, May 1, 6:00–9:00 PM. The public is invited to attend.

Fascination with color is apparent in the work of both these artists. These pieces sing out - they raise the possibility that good humor can be engendered by color alone. Allusive of the natural world, they are at the same time direct and accessible. Surface is paramount to the success of these art pieces—the smoothness of the glass contrasts with layered textures in the paintings. The colors of glass and paintings complement each other and pull the exhibit in new and exciting visual directions. Both artists find negative space crucial to this effect, moments of rest that energize each work. Donnelly and Finsen’s works provide tension between familiarity and abstraction and at the same time question placement within imagined space.

Having read deeply in anthropological literature, Donnelly is convinced that the images that keep our attention, images we keep coming back to again and again, strike toward our common basis in ancient humanity—images of nature, of our creativity, of striving, and of community.

With allusions to the works of early 20th century American painters and the Fauvists, Finsen’s paintings are a journey, from representation to abstraction and from visible hues and shapes to more psychologically charged compositions.

The exhibit runs through May 29.

"Magical Realism" by Gina Clapp

The term "Reality" mystifies Clapp. She sees reality as ever-changing, fluid yet fleeting and ephemeral. In "Magical Realism" she tries to focus intensely on what she sees and her work attempts to communicate her vision. "I am trying to catch a split second in time. I want to portray the movement in a still object, a kind of vibration that living materials have, as well as their inherent stillness. Drapery may feel like it is swirling, blowing, or hiding something. Pots and jars seem to tilt just slightly when I draw, as if they are shifting their weight. And the minute I think I have captured the moment it slips away".

The Grand opening of City Gallery on March 6, 2010 will feature works by all of the City Gallery members: Geoff Ault, Gina Clapp, Ellen Cornett, Marilyn Christiano, Sheryl Denbo, Nancy Donnelly, Jill Finsen, Will Fleishell, Tara Hamilton, Martha Huizenga, Tom Kenyon, Gayle Krughoff, Lynne Mallonee Schlimm, Liz Lescault, Anne Oman, M.M. Panas, Sarah Porter, Tom Pullin, Ronnie Spiewak, Wally Szyndler and Cissy Webb.

Located in the bustling H Street corridor, City Gallery joins the growing list of exciting arts destinations in the area.

City Gallery will bridge the burgeoning artistic community of Capitol Hill/H Street NE corridor with the growing art market of the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area. Greatly under-represented, the local arts community in the eastern half of DC will find a permanent home at City Gallery. DC art lovers will now have immediate access to the works of the many talented local artists who live in their midst.

The gallery represents over 20 local painters, sculptors, photographers, engravers and printmakers. Every year, all artist members will display their work in a group show. The gallery will then host solo shows by individual members monthly. Over the summer, the gallery will host an annual juried show which will be open to both members and non-member artists from around the region

In addition, City Gallery provides gallery space rental and catering, art advisory and curatorial services, art installation and new collector consultations. The City Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 5 PM .
