The Hill Rag's Art and the City Exhibition Opening is March 8!

The Hill Rag's Art and the City Exhibition

Hill Center Galleries

921 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20003

March 2 – April 30, 2017

Opening Reception: Wednesday, March 8, 6-8 p.m.

The Hill Rag’s Art and the City
A column by Jim Magner
The Hill Rag
Executive Editor: Melissa Ashabranner
Managing Editor: Andrew Lightman
Art Director: Jason Yen

Welcome to the exhibition of the Hill Rag’s Art and the City “REvisit” artists.
For the 14th year of my column, Art and the City, I elected to look back at some of the artists I had profiled in years past. I was looking for contrasts—for the creative journeys that bring new directions and new perceptions.
What I found was dedication – a fervid reaching for excellence and evolving insights that let them soar higher, while ever-testing and questioning the meaning of it all.
For all of these artists, the intervening years have been full of art – full of seeing, searching, and living visually. By being creative, they have given true value to time.
This is a terrific show in the variety of subjects and styles. The quality of work is exceptional and intellectually exciting, from:
The ever-exploring idea art of Alan Braley,
The mystical watercolor landscapes of Tom Bucci,
The abstracted visual rhythms of Tati Kaupp,
The internal questioning force of Matt Sesow,
The passage through time and dancing colors of Jan Kern,
The exquisite oil landscapes of Andrei Kushnir,
The powerful abstract images of Anne Marchand,
The wonderfully whimsical drawings and pastels of Ellen Cornett,
The roaring social statements of Dana Ellyn,
The portraits and passions of Patrick Campbell,
The vision and award-winning landscapes of Barbara Nuss,
To the reaching and lifting river photography of Bruce McNeil.
Yes, the works are for sale…too often underpriced in my opinion – with 30% going to the support of Hill Center.

About Jim Magner:
I’ve been writing the Hill Rag column, Art and the City, since March 2002—14 years. I am an artist and writer. My book, A Haunting Beauty: Vietnam Through the Eyes of an Artist, has received awards and great reviews.
I have had a presence on Capitol Hill for 40 years in one capacity or another and have a fair number of paintings in personal collections scattered about the area.
I have also been a legislative assistant to a US senator and a teacher of kids with emotional disabilities. The former prepared me for the latter.

This show is generously sponsored by the Hill Rag.

Opening at New Gallery /Adah Rose Gallery

Adah Rose Bitterbaum is opening a contemporary art gallery in Kensington, Maryland and would love for you to come to the opening of the inaugural show on September 10! She has worked as the Director  of the Studio gallery in Dupont Circle and as an Independent curator for almost four years. Ms. Adah Rose's new gallery space is a part of a burgeoning arts community in the DC metropolitan area. Her focus will be primarily on DC, Maryland and Virginia artists and a variety of art students from area colleges and universities. The inaugural show at Adah Rose Gallery features the work of artists Lori Anne Boocks and Elizabeth Grusin-Howe.
 "Mysteries of Space and Place"
Lori Anne Boocks and Elizabeth Grusin-Howe
Sept. 7-Oct. 9, 2011
 Opening Reception: Saturday, Sept. 10 6-9 p.m.
The Opening will be a lot of fun with music,
excellent food and of course.....wonderful art.

 Lori Anne Boocks

Ms Boocks, a painter, is the keeper of stories. The act of remembering and sharing stories is a powerful influence for Ms Boocks. Just as the passage of time creates layers of experiencing — the remembering of an event, the misremembering of it, the distancing, the forgetting are all important pieces in her process and thinking. In her paintings, text serves as both subject matter and the basis for mark-making. Texture for each piece comes from her hands, brushwork, and a subtractive process where layers of poured washes are added to the surface, then partially removed with cloth. Ms Boocks received her BFA in Art from Old Dominion University and was awarded a recent solo show at the Delaplaine Arts Center in Frederick Maryland. She has shown extensively in the Washington Metropolitan area.

Elizabeth Grusin-Howe
Ms Grusin-Howe, a print maker, also uses layering in her one of a kind prints that revel in the splendor, decay and serenity of Venice. In layers of paint, metallic pigments and waxes, she builds layer upon layer reflecting the experiences of the city itself and the intrigue and stories implicit in such a mysterious place. Ms Grusin-Howe received her BA in Art and Art History from the University of Maryland and has studied at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. She has shown extensively in the Washington Metropolitan area.

Transformer
OPEN HOUSE: Saturday, February 5; 1-7pm
Meet and greet throughout the day with artist Lauren Rice.

ARTIST TALK: Saturday, February 5; 2pm

Installation work of Detroit-based artist Lauren Rice in her first DC solo exhibition. Similar to set designs for theatrical events, the landscapes Rice creates in her sculptural work are fantastical - elements appear to collapse, levitate, burst and grow within the gallery space. With Heirlooms, Rice references gardens, flowers and vases, while simultaneously vulgarizing their traditional preconceptions as feminine and romantic.

Project 4
Drive By

February 5 - March 5, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 5, 2011 - 6:30pm - 9:30pm

The show Drive By at Project 4 Gallery features six artists whose drawings, paintings, collages, and video art offer unexpected insight into the common scenes we observe while moving through the structures of an urban and suburban landscape. People play a periphery role in the artwork and are frequently absent altogether. The material objects that encapsulate our urban lifestyle take on subtle psychological, emotional, and spiritual characteristics. Mundane landscapes and ordinary object are transformed by the artist into quiet reflections of the intangible structures that form the individual experience in a Western culture.

The featured artists Kim Beck, Martyn Blundell, Zlatko Cosic, Sarah McKenzie, Michael A. Salter, and Gregory Thielker take different approaches to explore what we miss when driving by seemly unimportant landscapes, too trivial for our conscious recognition or attention.

Clouds InFormation: Helen Glazer
Exhibition Dates: Feb 4 - Feb 25, 2011
For the past five years, Glazer’s work has been heavily influenced by chaos and complexity theories’ perspectives on the unpredictability of natural phenomena. As her latest Clouds series (on view from February 4th 2011 to February 24th 2011 at Hillyer Art Space) demonstrates, the artistic process is analogous to the dynamical systems posited by chaos and complexity theories — that is, an artwork takes shape within particular conditions of time, place, medium and the artist's own hand, finally unfolding as these unpredictable forces interact.
Monstrous: Jessika Tarr
Exhibition Dates: Feb 4 - Feb 25, 2011
Emerging from the dark yet whimsical world of children’s literature, Jessika Tarr’s exhibition Monstrous features works that are both narrative and theatrical. Just as German story books combine dark and provocative themes with seemingly innocent illustrations, her works contain a tension between content and style.
Members' Gallery: Artists' Advisory Committee Show
February's Members' Show features work by Hillyer Art Space's Artists' Advisory Committee members. The Artists' Advisory Committee is comprised of well-known artists' from the Washington DC area and is primarily responsible for selecting artists for Hillyer Art Space's exhibitions. Richard Siegman @ The District of Columbia Arts Center (DCAC)

ReSolve New Works by Richard Siegman
Curated by Joanne Kent and Stuart Greenwell

Jan. 14 - Feb. 6, 2011
Opening: Friday, January 14, 7-9pm

ReSolve is abstractionist Richard Siegman's re-examination of a 30-year painting process that finds him creating his most realized, and freshest work to date. By balancing his signature expressionist gestures against a contra-indicated slick, hard-edged ground, the result is a controlled dynamism of infinite proportion.
An artist faces a blank slate when beginning a new work. Regardless of the artist’s experience, creating even a single piece requires the same investigation of self in relation to materials and pictorial elements, and solving or re-solving those challenges. This process reinvents and keeps the work fresh and relevant to the present. Richard Siegman is a committed abstractionist. His most recent body of work is a continuation of the style developed in his signature large-scale acrylic abstractions on resin board. The palette for those paintings with vigorously applied thick strokes was mostly primary colors and black on a white background. These new paintings include more secondary and tertiary colors, and surfaces are as often hard slick gloss as thick impasto. These works are more thoughtful and controlled, and weave together a complex whole made up of disparate elements. Parts consist of shapes, including inverted pyramids or bands, either vertical or horizontal and often at right angles to each other, that interact with areas of thick paint or gloss enamel. The expressionistic strokes of color, rather than dominating the overall surface, are contained within the bands or other hard-edged shapes. These new paintings merge his earlier physical and intuitive spontaneity with a thought out and considered process, and result in a dynamic interplay of parts and surface. Joanne Ken

CITY Gallery Presents
Ronnie Spiewak "Leaves, Words & Screens"
Opening Sat. Jan 8, 6-9pm
In Spiewak’s words: “Collage has always been a satisfying vehicle for expressing my ideas and emotions. Scissors and exacto blades are among my most coveted tools, serving in effect, as my paintbrushes. They help create lines and shapes quickly and crisply giving the work the energy I seek.  I am most comfortable when I’m tearing, cutting and pasting paper onto paper. Paper also has a 3-dimensional quality that I’m constantly exploring. Glossy black  ink-saturated magazine paper sings. The color, plainness and usefulness of brown paper give it an earthy quality.
