“A Glimpse and a Witness to Time”

In his most recent work, Mr. Belmar uses iconic images - a typewriter, a spinning top, a bicycle - to recount the personal history and story of each image. These nostalgic images allow us to examine our collective memory, often with irony and humor. Many of the objects he depicts are obsolete, but he marvels at the evolution of technology and the inventions that have replaced them. Using a technique perfected over many years, Mr. Belmar uses hand painted sheets of mylar and plastic, carefully arranged from light to dark, and plays with light and the sculptural three dimensionality that emerges. His works reference a time in our past that is impossible to recreate, but important to remember.

Ms. Chang, like Mr. Belmar, works with themes of time, change and a glimpse at the inner psyche. Her installations are comprised of individual, exquisite works of art, all connected to each other and site specific. They evoke landscapes, both internal and external, and are concerned with how site and environment shape and evoke mental states. She too marvels at the brisk change of today’s world. Though the art is deeply personal, viewers will recognize iconic images from architecture, construction, transportation, and symbols from both Eastern and Western Culture. Ms. Chang works in mixed media and, like Mr. Belmar, her works are layered and include materials such as watercolor, paper, thread, collage, photography and wood.

Joan Belmar was born in Santiago, Chile and emigrated to Spain where he began to paint professionally. Mr. Belmar then moved to Washington DC in 1999, and was granted permanent residency in the U.S. based on extraordinary artistic merit in 2003. He has shown at the WPA and the American University Museum, and was a Mayor's Award Finalist in 2007 as an outstanding emerging artist. In 2009 the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities awarded him an artist fellowship grant and in 2010 he was awarded an Individual Artist grant in Painting from the Maryland Arts Council.

Mei Mei Chang received her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Ohio University in 2002. She has exhibited her work in over thirty solo and group exhibitions. She has shown at the Takoma Park Community Center, Hillyer Art Space, the (e)merge Art Fair and the Addison Ripley Gallery. She has received numerous awards and residencies, including at the Vermont Studio Center and the Great River Art Association, and has just completed her ARCH Residency at Honfleur Gallery in Anacostia.

FOGGY BOTTOM OUTDOOR SCULPTURE EXHIBIT

OPEN TO GRADUATE ART SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE WASHINGTON DC, VIRGINIA, AND BALTIMORE METROPOLITAN AREAS

Sculpting Outside the Lines will be the third biennial exhibit of outdoor sculpture in the Foggy Bottom Historic District, Washington, DC. Arts in Foggy Bottom, a project of the Foggy Bottom Association, sponsors the exhibit. The goals of the Exhibit are to (1) enrich the cultural environment of the Foggy Bottom community by providing exposure to the visual arts, especially sculpture; (2) create educational opportunities for residents, non-residents and students as they relate to the visual arts; and (3) draw the attention of people who live outside of Foggy Bottom to this unique, historically-significant residential neighborhood.

Curator Laura Roulet will select approximately 15 sculptures to be sited on private property, with 2-3 of those works chosen from this open call for student entries. Artists whose work is chosen will receive an honorarium of $1,000, divided into two payments of $500 at installation and $500 at de-installation. New York, NY.  Porter Contemporary announce Splash!, a group exhibition of thirteen artists in various mediums focusing on color. The exhibition opens to the public with a wine reception on Thursday, October 27, from 7 - 9 PM when Porter Contemporary invites everyone to come in their most impressive colors and make their own splash! 
 
“Splash! is intended to be fun and exploratory as we head indoors in the winter months” says Owner/Director, Jessica L. Porter. “We have had some serious exhibitions over recent months and my hope was to lighten things up and talk about something as basic yet complex as color”.
From ancient Greek philosophers devising connotative meanings to different colors, to color theory principles found in Leonardo da Vince’s notebooks, and Isaac Newton’s theory of colors in the 18th century -- the energizing flow of light transcends time and continues to delight its viewers.  Amazingly, humans perceive over 2.8 million different hues. We invite you to let your eyes roam free following the emotionally stirring effects of our colorful show.

The exhibition focuses on thirteen artists’ ideas about color and how it manifests itself in the work. Porter Contemporary reached outside their normal repertoire of artists and held an open call to not only receive images for consideration but also artists’ thoughts on color. Artworks range in medium and include: photography, wood, watercolors, acrylics, oil, ceramics and other mixed medium items. Many of the works are abstract and dissect different subject matters that range from the middle-America cut outs by Lori Larusso to Aoife O’Donnell’s photographs of cancer cells.


About the Artists:
Born and raised in Lithuania, Antonas Adomaitis  was rejected from entering The Vilnius Art Academy at the age of 18 because he failed The History of The Communist Party of the USSR entrance exam. He uses color to lead the viewer through the maze of form as he reflects and studies the interplay between nature and psyche, to bring forth tradition, but carry it further into the realm of the unexpected
Jennie Barrese explores change and how in order to grow, we must first let go and leave behind certain things in order to survive.
Drawing from her painting and textile background, Tegan Brozyna’s current work focuses on the relationship of space or place and it is inspired by the way humans dissect, reconfigure and relate to our world as well as how the natural world interacts with and affects humanity.
Born in Russia, Sergey Dikovsky draws his inspiration from the world around him- words, sounds, places and images. Reluctant to paint due to colorblindness, Dikovsky worked in black and white for many years. Over time, his desire to paint in color overwhelmed his fear and now he follows his intuition to create colorful worlds.
Painting allows Daina Falk to indulge her strange obsession with doors and her enthusiasm for vibrant colors, strong, clean lines, and the vivid interplay of lights and darks.
A native of South Korea, Jihay Kang, uses iconic images associated with Western material culture to explore intersections of consumerism and authenticity.
Lori Larusso explores the unavoidable contradictions which exist in our personal and collective systems of belief by pointing to the complexity of individual situations. Very often, our ideals are a reflection of the way we wish things were, rather than a product of the way we actually experience them and she finds this conflict to be in direct connection to the representational image.
Andrew Maglathlin focuses on sculptures of ambiguous forms in order to provoke inner thoughts and feelings by stimulating unconscious emotions.
Fascinated by the emotional power of color, music and poetry to engage the senses, Anne Marchand explores universal currents and rhythms by layering paint, texture and words on canvas.
Bulgarian sculptor, Orfey Mindov is a teacher by trade and uses each object whether wood, metal or paint as a conduit to teach and emote, giving life through nature.
By exploring cultural messages through iconic signs and familiar patterns along with organic and inorganic imagery, Judith Mullen records moments of interaction and response to daily man–made stimuli as juxtaposed to the presence of the natural world around us.
Aoife O’Donnell seeks to locate connections between the arts and science through borrowed methods and collaborations. Working with a Professor of Biology in Dublin, the photographer uses microscopes to record images of cells, tissue, DNA and various other effluvia from her family and herself.
Roy Wiemann’s paintings are deeply personal emotional moments and memories; an abstract visual diary that is created and fueled by these powerful emotions which illicit a strong visceral response in the viewer.

A\Work Gallery announces its upcoming exhibition of paintings and assemblages by Maryland-based artist Courtney Miller Bellairs, running October 15 through January 7. The opening reception with the artist will be Saturday, October 15, from 6-8pm. Ms Miller Bellairs’ new work explores ideas and their expression through various materials and forms; works range from hand crafted conceptual sketches and process pieces, to larger works that remain intimate and human in scale.

Trained as an architect and artist, Ms. Miller Bellairs’ work explores space, scale, structure and relationships between art and architecture. Through oil and watercolor painting, collage, and most recently assemblage, Ms. Miller Bellairs’ work explores simple objects, cropped and composed to reveal interesting characteristics about light, spatial quality, and the relationships between object and material. Through these images, her work finds the beauty in everyday life.

Hasan Elahi is an interdisciplinary artist whose work examines issues of surveillance, simulated time, transport systems, borders and frontiers. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions at venues such as SITE Santa Fe, Centre Georges Pompidou, Sundance Film Festival, Kassel Kulturbahnhof, and at the Venice Biennale. Elahi recently was invited to speak about his work at the Tate Modern, The Einstein Forum, and at at the American Association of Artificial Intelligence. His work has been supported with grants and sponsorships from the Creative Capital Foundation, Ford Foundation/Philip Morris, and the Asociación Artetik Berrikuntzara in Donostia-San Sebastián in the Basque Country/Spain. His work is frequently in the media and has been covered by The New York Times, Forbes, Wired, CNN, ABC, CBS, NPR, Al Jazeera, Fox, and has also appeared on The Colbert Report. In 2009, he was Resident Faculty and Nancy G. MacGrath Endowed Chair at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was a 2010 Alpert/MacDowell fellow. Currently, he is Associate Professor of Art at University of Maryland and Director of the Digital Cultures and Creativity Program in the Honors College..

In a series of abstract paintings, Anne Marchand explores a new vocabulary of color and texture in the swirling vortexes of nebulae and the surfaces of moons and planets, bringing these into her ongoing search for ways to approach mystic poetry through visual expression. In the show, "Of Shining Worlds: Recent Paintings by Anne Marchand," curator Claudia Rousseau highlights more than 30 paintings by Washington, DC based artist Anne Marchand. The exhibition brings together works inspired by images from the Hubble spacecraft that relate to the artists theme of interconnections. The show at the King Street Gallery, the Morris and Gwendolyn Foundation Arts Center, Montgomery College will open with an artist's reception, on Thursday, September 22, 6:00 - 8:00pm, and remain on display through October 19, 2011.  The artist will comment on her work, followed by a poetry reading and live music on Thursday, September 29, 6:00 - 7:00pm.

The King Street Gallery is in the atrium of the Morris and Gwendolyn Foundation Arts Center on the west side of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. Parking is available in the West Garage which is located immediately behind the center.

The King Street Gallery is the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours.

Organic Plasticity features works by Selin Oguz Balci and Natalie Cheung, highlighting the organic vs. artificial manipulation of forms. The work of Selin Oguz Balci is produced through the stimulation of organisms whose byproducts result in colorful biological close ups reminiscent of scientific texts.  The work of Natalie Cheung utilizes the chemical to capture the natural reactions to light and air, leaving behind crystalized formations that evoke forgotten landscapes.  Although their methods and materials are very opposing there is a familiarity ever present in the patterns they’ve created.

ELLINGTON ROBINSON through October 15, 2011

“In Quest of The Sun,” a solo exhibition of new work by DC artist Ellington Robinson will be on view through Saturday, October 15, 2011.

To Ellington Robinson, painting is a physical, psychological, and spiritual experience, which includes a formal process and a narrative approach. By contorting and layering collected materials such as travel documents, vinyl, record sleeves, and cassette tapes, Robinson’s works evolve and embody his quest.

In his new work Robinson explores the ways by which people reach their physical and socioeconomic location. He asks: “How do we arrive at our longitude, latitude, and altitude? What determines our height, width, and depth within time zones.” Robinson recognizes that planes, trains and cars, religion, education, and labels are agents in our migration, while also acknowledging a celestial agent where the ancestors dwell in eternity and parallel universes. He employs interoffice envelopes where the names of ancestors, musicians, freedom fighters, and literati are inscribed as a way of stating a common thread; or cassette tapes in which the voices are there but cannot be seen or heard. Further, Robinson draws from the study of his own location and travels. Railroad tracks and floorboards of inner city row-homes are distinctive from the horizon of the ocean in the Virgin Islands, visually representing the contrast between the two places Robinson has called home.

Ellington Robinson earned his M.F.A. in painting and mix media at the University of Maryland, College Park and his B.A. in English from Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA. His work is in public and private collections including The David C. Driskell Center and the Jean and Robert Steele Collection. Robinson currently lives and works in Washington DC.

The Artist-In-Residence Program (AIR) is an exciting new addition to the Department of Visual Arts and Design. The AIR program is designed to support and enhance the artistic and educational environment within The Morris and Gwendolyn Foundation Arts Center. During their residency professional working artists will be provided personal studio space to carry out their own studio practice. Resident artists will augment the academic programs through interaction with the school community in various activities including demonstrations, workshops, lectures, and exhibits in the Annex Gallery.

Join harmon art lab for the second exhibition featuring paintings by Baltimore artist Michel Modell in the solo space and an installation by DC-based artist Mariah Anne Johnson in the project space.

Michel Modell’s unique watercolor techniques grab you instantly with their large iconic imagery that stays with you well after leaving it. Using social commentary with a humorous stance, her images can shock, delight and tickle a bit.

Michel  has been recognized in numerous art publications, including New American Paintings and has been nominated for a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant. Her work will be featured prominently in the upcoming Art Basel in Miami. 

Mariah Anne Johnson works with layer upon layer of intricately organized sheets of different colors and patterns creating landscapes that are visually stimulating and peaceful. Her work references the nostalgia of home life and remembrance of spaces she has inhabited, including her former studios.

For Mariah, though, the process is also a painterly one. She likens it to the color, line and form that she uses in her works on canvas and paper. Looking at it this way, each room becomes a blank canvas upon which she drapes and layers color creating a new environment that becomes something else for us.

harmon art lab (HAL) is a creative collaboration that ties art curator, artist and viewer into an interactive dialogue of ideas and engagement.

Clyde Fowler describes his paintings as ‘pictorial choreography.’ He approaches his work in a manner similar to that of a choreographer, filling them with orchestrated sensations and intuitive notations while giving consideration to movement, rhythm, space and form. His art explores the associative nature of visual relationships and the dynamic potential of juxtaposition involving a language that is purely abstract. Although Fowler’s imagery can reference personal experience and a range of artistic influences, especially the staged tableaux of theatrical director and designer Robert Wilson, he begins with no preconceived message or set direction. Instead, Fowler allows the paintings to develop according to the added strokes, shapes and colors while constantly revising aesthetic decisions during that process.

A Photographer's Journey: A Conversation with Alex Webb, THURSDAY OCTOBER 6 @ 6:30PM

Join MEXICAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE for this captivating conversation between photographer Alex Webb and Juan García de Oteyza, curator of our current exhibition Mexico Through the Lens of National Geographic and former director of the Aperture Foundation in New York City.  Webb will present his most recent monograph, the Suffering of Light, which is largely drawn from his work in Latin America; provide insight into his fascinating photographs of the US/ Mexican border that are featured in the exhibition; and have a conversation with García de Oteyza about the important role of photographs and photographers in shaping our understanding of people and places.

Copies of The Suffering of Light and Violet Isle will be available for purchase by cash or check before and after the talk.

Alex Webb was born in San Francisco, California, in 1952. He studied history and literature at Harvard University and photography at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. Since 1975, Webb has participated in numerous exhibitions around the world. His work is included in such collections as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  He is the recipient of an Overseas Press Club Award (1980), the Leopold Godowsky, Jr. Color Photography Award (1988), a National Endowment for the Arts Grant (1990), the Leica Medal of Excellence (2000), the David Octavius Hill Medaille (2002), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2007.) Webb's photographs have appeared in such magazines as GEO, Time, and the New York Times Magazine. He has covered many subjects for National Geographic magazine, including the Amazon River; Tijuana and Monterrey, Mexico; and Istanbul. He has published many photography books, including Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds: Photographs from the Tropics, Under A Grudging Sun, Crossings, Violet Isle (with Rebecca Norris Webb), and The Suffering of Light. Webb lives in Brooklyn, New York with the photographer Rebecca Norris Webb.

"World On A Wire" presents new works by emerging artist Tanja Meski. Meski was born in Finland, and currently divides her time between the United States, Italy and Finland.  The show continues a theme she started when exhibiting in a Group Show at Foundry Gallery in February 2011. In that exhibit, she presented a piece called "Ocean on a Wire" referring to the Gulf oil spill that occurred in 2010. That piece was intended to critique the slow bureaucratic processes related to the well-being of international waters. Meski, along with millions of observers, was stunned by the unwillingness of U.S. authorities to sacrifice assets and manpower toward immediate rescue operations.

Ai-Wen Wu Kratz’s paintings in the exhibition are titled, “Color Logic /RYB,” “Color Logic /RGB” and “Color Logic /CMYK” respectively.  They were among works that Kratz exhibited in March, 2010 at the Latino Art Museum, Pomona, CA.

The paintings, done in acrylic on canvas, resulted from Kratz’s inquiry into the art of Photography. She was first intrigued by the heart of a digital camera, the CCD grids and the pattern of filters in Red, Green and Blue that enable the generation of a file with color information.

Her paintings in the current exhibition are explorations on the three distinctive color models. They are the artists color model RYB, the additive color model RGB, and the subtractive colormodel, CMYK.  Kratz found the anti-intuitive surprises were in the mixing of two or more colors in the additive color model, as well as in the subtractive color model.

To present the thought process of her query into the varied dimensions in color models, Kratz resorts to the use of pigments.  That is, the application and the theory of the artist model RYB.  To credit the RGB as a color light model, a 114-Barrier LED flood light is used to illuminate the painting, “Color Logic /RGB.”  For the additive color model RGB is not about pigments, but light.  The goal of the exploration is, Kratz says, not to paint images mindlessly, but to think seriously about what we do in our art making.  For art, duly is an intellectual field, as much as science and mathematics are.  This remains a constant quest in all major art exhibitions.

Joan Belmar: ONCE

Joan Belmar uses iconographies; bikes, spinning tops, toys, etc. often nostalgic items, they reference a time in our collective past that is impossible to recreate, but remains important to remember. Belmar works with the themes of time, change and movement, sometimes ironically and humorously.

Born in Chile, Joan Belmar moved to Spain at age 24 and began professionally painting. Four years later, 1999, he came to Washington DC and was granted permanent residency in the U.S. based on extraordinary artistic merit in 2003.

iwishyouwerehere is an on-going conceptual photography project. The project started as a personal mission for Keith to look closer at the subject and through the restraints of the iPhone, to make more intentional images. Documenting his own story allowed Lane a separate space to define that process through this series of iPhone photographs. The iPhone itself allowed the project to be minimalistic and consistent: without the requirement of a professional camera. Lane could use a tool he always had with him, to capture those moments with ease. Through the technology of the iPhone-and the filters, the apps-Lane could concentrate on more formal qualities, and how they interact with the subject matter itself.

The Department of Visual Arts and Design of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus of Montgomery College is seeking proposals for residencies beginning in spring 2012. Artists will be provided personal studio space in the Morris and Gwendolyn Foundation Arts Center. Proposals are sought that will benefit, involve, or impact art students and members of the college community. Residency proposals lasting from one month up to one academic semester will be considered.

GRACE (Greater Reston Arts Center) presents until every shape has found its city with Evan Reed from September 29 through November 12, 2011. Borrowing his title from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Reed explores the intersection of art, literature, and architecture through complex sculptures and drawings that transcend literal interpretations. Works will also include a site-specific camera obscura with a façade based on aspects of Reston’s historic architecture.
This exhibition and related programs are funded in part through a project grant from the Arts Council of Fairfax County, funded by Fairfax County. Fidelity Investments is sponsoring the exhibition.

"The Color School's Pedigree" Paul Richard lecture

Paul Richard gave a captivating talk Monday night. His lecture, "The Color School's Pedigree", kept the packed room engaged for a full hour as he covered the history of the Color School from its beginnings to its end, and overturned several of the generally-accepted legends about the artists and the community in which they worked.

More than 100 collectors, artists, and art aficionados listened, asked questions, and reflected on the tale Richard told as he he showed slides of work by numerous Washington artists of the 60s, their predecessors and descendants.

As his slides showed work by Kenneth Noland and Louis Morris, Paul discussed how the Color School is often thought to be an outgrowth of the work of contemporaries in New York such as Helen Frankenthaler. But that formulation fails to consider the unique innovation these painters made, and how those innovations were shaped by the facts of their lives in Washington, and other diverse influences on their aesthetic.

Paul's focused on the color of the Color School, and the various ways in which diverse figures such as Josef Albers and Vincent Augustus Tack (one of the great treasures of the Phillips Collection) influenced these painters, as they sought to create a vocabulary of pure color in their painting.

This reevaluation of the Color Painters as Washington painters is part of the mission of the Washington Color School Project. Funny and profound by turns, Paul's analysis of painting and the city is a prime example of the kind of critical reassessment that needs support from those of us who care about art and artistic life in Washington.

The public is invited to a talk and book signing followed by a light reception with Kenneth R. Feinberg, selected by US Attorney General John Ashcroft to administer the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, created by an Act of Congress shortly after 9/11 to compensate the families of the victims. Feinberg worked for 33 months pro bono to develop the regulations governing the fund and administer all aspects of the program. 

It was his responsibility to make the decisions regarding how much each family of a 9/11 victim would receive by estimating how much each victim would have earned in a full lifetime. Families unhappy with the offer were able to appeal their case in an informal hearing. Feinberg personally presided over more than 900 of the 1,600 hearings.  At the end of the process, $7 billion was awarded to 97 percent of the families.

“It’s a brutal, sort of cold, thing to do.  Anybody who looks at this program and expects that by cutting a US Treasury check you are going to make 9/11 families happy is vastly misunderstanding what’s going on with this program,” states Feinberg.  “There is not one family member I’ve met who wouldn’t have gladly given back the check, or, in many cases, their own lives to have that loved one back. ‘Happy’ never enters into this equation.”

This program is presented as part of the 9/11 Arts Project, positioned to provide local forums for extending the dialogue, sparking community engagement and inspiring creative expression 10 years after 9/11. The arts, particularly opera, proved personally invaluable to Feinberg as a way to cope with the tragedy associated with administering the fund.  He is currently the President of the Washington National Opera.

Anne Marchand will give a short talk about her work in the exhibition, Of Shining Worlds: Recent Paintings by Anne Marchand, curated by Claudia Rousseau. Artist Tom Block, scholar of medieval literature, will do a reading of poems by Rumi, the great early thirteenth century Persian mystical poet. The poems have been selected for their relevance to the cosmic iconography of Anne Marchand's paintings. Maurice Sedacca, a musician and composer from New York, will play a prelude and will play between the poems. U.S. Premiere of Aruban Artists’ “Microcosm” Exhibition

(Washington, D.C.) – For the first time, ten contemporary Aruban artists will collectively exhibit their work in the United States at the Residence of the Dutch Ambassador in Washington, D.C.  The “Microcosm”” exhibition is part of a series of events recognizing Aruba’s 25 years of Status Aparte within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The multi-disciplinary exhibition, consisting of site-specific installations, sculpture, mixed-media assemblage, video, paintings, collage, photography and drawings, brings together the artwork of noted Caribbean artists: Ciro Abath, Joanie Croes, Telka Van Dodewaard, Rob ter Haar, Glenda Heyliger, Elisa Lejuez Peters, Elvis Lopez, Alida Martinez, Osaira Muyale, Ryan Oduber and Hugo Palmar. These artists represent the diverse and eclectic reality of the Aruban “Microcosm” within the Kingdom.

Microcosm” juxtaposes contemporary Aruban art with the classic 17^th century Dutch masters on display in the Residence producing conversations on how the microcosm of Aruba defines itself within the macrocosm of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Aruban art work engages with the existing Dutch masters and objects at the Residence in dynamic ways creating thought provoking contrasts.

Curated by Laura Roulet, Gijs Stork and Renwick Heronimo, a team of American, Dutch and Aruban contemporary art experts, “Microcosm” is the first phase of an international multicultural and policy focused initiative to create a platform where contemporary art serves as a medium to create awareness and dialogue among these participating regions.

As part of this initiative, the Aruban artists will visit relevant art institutions in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and New York to forge new ties with like minded individuals.

 “The ‘Microcosm’ exhibition illustrates that the Kingdom of the Netherlands is a macrocosm that stretches over two continents offering a rich diversity of people and cultures. “The exhibition celebrates the unique relationship between Aruba and the Netherlands and reveals how an autonomous entity thrives within the Kingdom,” added the Ambassador.

 “Microcosm” will be open to the public by appointment only from September 19^th to October 13^th from 9:30am to 11:30am.  The exhibition is closed on weekends and the Columbus Day holiday, October 10^th. Reservations must be made by emailing was-gma@minbuza.nl with the date and time requested.

WASHINGTON, DC – Flashpoint Gallery presents Site Aperture, an exhibition of site-specific installations by artists Margaret Boozer, Mia Feuer, Talia Greene and Mariah Anne Johnson. Curated by Danielle O’Steen, Site Aperture challenges the confines of the white cube in order to reconsider the traditional gallery space. The artists will respond directly to Flashpoint’s history and physical details to create a unique experience for the viewer. While sharing similar conceptual interests in site and installation, the artists will build their artworks in divergent materials ranging from dirt and Styrofoam to wallpaper and bed sheets.


There will be an opening reception on Friday, September 30 from 6-8pm. Curator Danielle O’Steen will be giving a talk at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Art + Coffee program on Sunday, October 16, 1:30pm. The artists and the curator will hold a roundtable discussion at Flashpoint Gallery on Saturday, October 29th at 2pm.

The (e)merge art fair (www.emergeartfair.com) takes place at the Capitol Skyline Hotel, 10 I St., SW. (e)merge starts with a private preview on Thursday. The Fair will feature vetted exhibitions of art by DC-Baltimore area and international emerging galleries, nonprofits, and unrepresented artists, as well as panel discussions and performances, all for a public admission fee of $15.

Anne Marchand The painting "Spiral" by Anne Marchand will be part of her exhibit at Montgomery College that features abstract paintings inspired by images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

“Of Shining Words: Recent Paintings by Anne Marchand” is on display through Oct. 19 at the King Street Gallery in the atrium of The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center, 930 King St., Silver Spring. The opening reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 will feature music composed by Steven Rogers.
