Renée Stout and Odinga Tyehimba, Lay Your Hand on the Radio (detail), 2014,
wood, paint, glass, found technological parts, and metal leaf, approx. 70 x 60 x 30 inches
|
Incubator is a collaborative project pairing Washington, DC-based Renée Stout with self-taught artist Odinga Tyehimba, who hails from Durham, North Carolina. In addition to a mutual interest in African spirituality and ritual objects, Stout and Tyehimba share a fascination with radio and cell phone towers, electrical generators, circuit boards and other objects representing the transference of power or information. Their unique shrines, diagrams, and machines are informed by sources as diverse as contemporary video games and global sociopolitical events. Suggesting a post-apocalyptic alternate reality, their works beckon us to consider the shifting balance of power in this world, and our direction within it.

G Fine Arts Opens "Catch & Release," by W C Richardson on June 21
![]() |
| W C Richardson (detail) Loop Fractured Light, 2013, 60 x 60 inches |
June 21 - August 2, 2014
Opening June 21, 6-8 pm
G Fine Art is pleased to initiate programming at 4718 14th Street, NW with the exhibition, Catch & Release, by W C Richardson.
Richardson thinks about complex systems and ideas, and expresses them in dynamic color and optically intense paintings. His canvas is an arena for acting, his painting is a complicated process that alternates focus between structure and paint. The freehand process that Richardson employs, gives priority to paint, resulting in a work that refuses to settle into a single, stable reading.
The series, all created in 2013-2014, explores the interaction of simple rectilinear forms placed at the intersection of countervailing underlying structures. He begins each painting with a square, orthogonal grid and a few operative rules for the interaction with freehand linear gestures that spiral or curve or otherwise deform the two dimensionality of the grid. As layers of paint define the rectilinear forms and the ground in which they are embedded, the operative rules and original substructures become obscured. The viewer encounters a field of unstable connection and subsets that emerge and dissolve as attention shifts back and forth between part and whole.
Richardson's paintings have always been informed by the history and philosophical implication of the physical and cognitive sciences and mathematics. The paintings are not however illustrations of principles or demonstrations of scientific or mathematical information. He is most interested in how these ideas become metaphorical and allusive through their embodiment in the abstract forms of the paintings, where image and process are intertwined.
These paintings are physically wholesome and robust. Painting thrives because it is one of the most immediate means to self expression.
Richardson received his MFA from Washington University, St Louis and his BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is currently Chair of the Department of Art and Professor of Painting at the University of Maryland, College Park.
His work has been featured in 21 solo and over 100 group exhibitions in museums and galleries in the US, Europe and the Mid East.

"WAVELENGTHS: A POETIC SYNTHESIS OF SOUND AND ART"
MATT CORRADO
JUNE 12-JULY 13, 2014
OPENING VERNISSAGE: SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 6:30-8:30 P.M.
Skateboarding, Rock and Roll, Comic Books, Anime, Jazz, Pop Music, Fashion, Street Art and Architecture have all served as influences in the art and music of Matt Corrado. Matt is an interdisciplinary artist whose exhibit includes a site specific ambient sound installation incorporating many influences from the world of popular culture. The exhibit also examines the many cultural contexts of the idea of "Wavelengths". A wavelength can be a measure of the distance between repetitions of a shape or sound. It includes peaks, valleys and a variety of modulations, all evident in Matt's work. The sound installation incorporates dialogues and monologues of people discussing wavelengths on a scientific level as well as on a linguistic and cultural one. "Are we on the same wavelength" has come to mean a sense of sympathy, empathy and rapport..all themes in Matt's visual and musical work. Matt composed music for and played on the sound installation and is joined by the musical talents of Sean Gaiser and Jarrett Nicolay. The exhibition also includes paintings and drawings exploring themes of hype, integrity, humor, discipline, money, truth and parenthood.
Matt Corrado graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. His work ranges from fine art, illustration and digital media. Matt is a musician. composer, music promoter and part owner in a recording studio. Matt has designed clothes, curated art, shown in numerous exhibits, created murals, managed bands, recorded music and is a true Renaissance Artist of our times. Matt's generation has embraced technology and with it the ability to perform and create across disciplines and to appeal to a broad idea of what is art.

Bulrush, Burdock and Brier..Columbine, Coloquintida and Cowslip...Gillyver, Gorse and Gooseberry...plants have inspired Shakespeare, the ancient Greeks and Romans, poets, playwrights and novelists from Medieval through Modern times. Plants provide pleasure, comfort and beauty. They serve us medicinally, as life sustaining food and as material for shelter. They serve as aphrodisiacs, as fragrance for perfumes and as delectable treasures in cuisine. The smell of a gardenia, the subtlety of the rarest of truffles and the joy of digging and planting in the garden are among the great Proustian memories we share.
The artists of Studio 155 glorify and honor a love and reverence for plants. These accomplished artists work in a variety of medium including oil, acrylic, colored pencil and graphite. Their work is as diverse and lovely as the subject matter they depict. From the rarest of orchids, to the ubiquitous corn plants of the Nation’s heartland, from the glory of a towering Ponderosa tree to the intimacy of the tulip stamen..the artists lovingly and exquisitely create works of art together. Studio 155 has exhibited together at the Delaware Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, VisArts in Rockville, the United States Botanic Garden, Studio Gallery and the Athenaeum in Alexandria, Va. Between them, they have illustrated books, received Presidential Commissions and are in numerous private collections.
