In collaboration with Congressman Jim Moran’s office, 68 pieces from An Artistic Discovery: The Congressional Art Competition for the 8th District of Virginia are located in Crystal City and available for public viewing.
“We are happy to partner with Congressman Moran’s office to put these works on display in Crystal City,” Angela Fox, President and CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Art transforms spaces and places, which is what we are committed to in Crystal City. This show joins our Art Walls and other exhibits in celebrating that dedication.” The 68 pieces hung at 2011 Crystal Drive are a sampling of the 150 submissions received from students throughout the 8th District of Virginia. The remaining submissions are on display at the Arlington Art Center.
Art enthusiasts can take a short walk from An Artistic Discovery to 2231 Crystal Drive to see the Luminous exhibit by artist Anne Marchand. Luminous opened in March and, by popular demand, has been extended through July 30. Inspired by the combination of colorful images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and mystical poetry, Marchand’s use of mixed media, acrylic and incorporation of texture and translucent passages of paint help create a moving and reflective exhibition.
Artistic Discovery and Luminous add to a growing collection in Crystal City’s Art Walls gallery. Visitors can take a stroll around Crystal City to view other notable works from local artists that are installed throughout Crystal City. These works infuse color and character into the area while leading to fun, whimsical, and interesting spaces for Crystal City’s guests, residents, and employees.
Finally, for the remainder of the summer “Bucky Art” statues will be on display on the streets of Crystal City. Inspired by R. Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome, the statues add to the excitement surrounding Arena Stage’s upcoming presentation of R. Buckminster Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE. LUMINOUS EXHIBIT EXTENDED

To continue to highlight Crystal City’s Green characteristics and add artistic elements to the neighborhood’s streets, sidewalks and public spaces, the Crystal City Business Improvement District is introducing ECO-Art Statues – a temporary, outdoor environmental art exhibit in one of Crystal City’s most landmark open spaces, the Crystal City Water Park.
In the Spring of 2008, the Crystal City BID placed six of the fifty artistically designed airplane statues that were part of Crystal Flight program onto the six grassy knolls within the Water Park. The Crystal Flight exhibition attracted increased attention in and patronage of the park and the Crystal City BID is seeking to replicate that success with another spring exhibition exclusively for that area.
This Call for Artists announces the opportunity to design and construct a three-dimensional, biodegradable sculpture for placement in the Crystal City Water Park for the exhibition, which will kick-off Crystal City’s spring Green event - Green Scene.
Selected artists will receive a grant of $2000 from the Crystal City Business Improvement District. In keeping with the theme of Crystal Green’s Green Scene schedule of events, selected pieces must be constructed of 100 percent biodegradable materials.
Design Submission: Please submit a full-color sketch or schematic of your design on 8.5 x 11-sized page (electronically is preferred). Be sure to include dimensions and call-out specific materials used.

Each design submitted must include an Artist Participation Form and a sketch of the proposed design on an 8.5 x 11” sheet and include dimensions and material call-outs.
Designs may not be political or derogatory.
Design submissions should be true to color.
Artists selected are required to sign a contract assigning the rights for all designs to the Crystal City BID.
The Crystal City BID reserves the right to use the designs or derivations of the designs on marketing materials and promotional materials as it deems necessary. Any personal use of designs selected must be approved by the Crystal City BID.
Designs MUST be 100 percent biodegradable.
The Artist Participation Package, including the Participation Form and any design submission must be received by April 17, 2009.
Design Selection Process
All designs must be approved by Crystal City Business Improvement District Staff.
Design selections will be completed and artists notified by April 20, 2009.
Artists selected will be required to sign a contract before receiving payment. Payment will be in two phases – 50 percent will be paid upon contract signing with the remaining 50 percent paid upon satisfactory completion and installation of the selected design.

The Crystal City Business Improvement District's overwhelmingly successful 2008 initiative, Crystal Flight - A Celebration of Art & Air, will have its final salute and charity auction send-off on January 13, 2009 from 6:00 - 9:00 PM. The airplanes will also be available for viewing on-line starting on December 5, 2008 with online bidding beginning on January 1, 2009. The proceeds from the auctioned airplane statues will be donated to a variety of area charities, designated in advance by each airplane's sponsor.
The charity auction will be held at the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive where the airplanes are on public display until the auction. Tickets for the live auction will be sold at the door for $20.00 and include a Crystal Flight commemorative book, registration for the auction and a wine and cheese reception. Additional copies of the book, Crystal Flight - A Celebration of Art & Air, are available for purchase through the Crystal City BID website for $15.00.

In The News / Art Walls in Crystal City
Anne Marchand, Michael Hammond, Jose Piedra at Prism Mural, 18th Street Underpass, Crystal City, VA. You wondered where I was this fall? What have I been doing? Well, I wasn't exactly the troll under the bridge, but I did get my hair blown around for over a month at the 18th Street underpass. Two of my recent public art projects are right across the river from Washington, DC in Crystal City, VA. Check them out. I liked being out in the elements, even on the gritty texture of the street, painting the Prism mural. There is something wonderful in being totally immersed in a creative project with good people around you. The best part was witnessing daily, with a river of pedestrians, the change that was taking place on this piece of concrete in Virginia. You know.... it does matter, those little tiny glimpses that let light and color in the mind. It excites the imagination, like peripheral vision, you might not see it head on, but you know it's there and you feel a delightful presence. Barren to beauty, perhaps not in excess, but steps in that direction. I love it when a team of artists form a good match. Jose Piedra, Michael Hammond, the wind and I painted the geometry, color and light that brought smiles to faces. Dear mural, keep doing that and more.

The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) unveils its latest creative endeavor, Art Walls, which includes three projects, Radiance, Prism and Ellipsis. Radiance and Prism flank the 160’ walls on the north and south sides of 18th Street South, bringing light and color to the thousands of Metro commuters who make their way to and from the Crystal City Metro station each day.
Local mosaic artist Valerie Theberge created Radiance, 25 dazzling and dynamic individual mosaics on one side, and Anne Marchand designed Prism, 35 large rectangles filled with geometric shapes for the opposing wall. Elsewhere in Crystal City, Ellipsis, courtesy of artist Anne Marchand and the Zenith Gallery, takes twelve of the artist’s most colorful abstracts, enlarges them into 10’ square panels and mounts them on the back wall of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Art Walls Creates Gallery in Crystal City - Crystal City sparkles with the unveiling of the Art Walls collection which currently includes three projects: Radiance, Prism, and Ellipsis. The Crystal City BID chose 18th and S. Bell Streets (Metro gateway area) for the first set of Art Walls, Radiance and Prism, which flank the north and south sides of 18th Street South, respectively. Marine Corps Marathon Celebrates Partnership with Arlington County
Ten original, artistic mile markers for the upcoming Marine Corps Marathon were unveiled during a press conference in Crystal City, Virginia on October 10. The mile markers, which include mile 1 and mile 26, represent each of the ten miles of the annual MCM that are run in Arlington County, Virginia. Designed by local artist Kevin Irvin, the colorful nine-foot tall, graffiti-style mile markers will displayed on the MCM course on Sunday, October 26.
Representatives from the Marine Corps Marathon, the Crystal City BID and Rosslyn Business Improvement District and Arlington County, including Chairman of the Arlington County Board, J. Walter Tejada, were on hand for the reveal “I am excited to proclaim October as ‘Marine Corps Marathon’ month in Arlington County,” said Tejada during his remarks. “Arlington continues to be the proud home of the annual event.”
The mile markers are part of larger partnership between the Marine Corps Marathon and Arlington County. On race day, spectators and runners will be able to enjoy exciting activities in the Arlington neighborhoods of Crystal City and Rosslyn. Crystal City hosts Crystal Run, a family-friendly fall festival from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., which lines 23rd Street and includes live bands, food tastings, activities for kids of all ages and a spectacular spot for spectators to view runners at miles 22 and 23 of the MCM course.
After crossing the finish line, runners will proceed to the Finish Festival, held on Wilson Boulevard and Lynn Street in Rosslyn, to retrieve their commemorative finisher coins, provided by USAA, as well as to enjoy live music, food, giveaways and more!
Later, Crystal City hosts the Post Race Celebration and Concert, featuring the BoDeans at 3:00 p.m.

The people who are running the 26-mile race a week from Sunday are probably now hitting the most intense days of their preparations. Those not taking part will be able to watch these dedicated runners as they cross various points along the course; this year, the finish line festival will be held on Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn, where you'll find a beer garden, food tastings, vendors and performers. If you don't feel like hanging out there, Crystal City's Crystal Run festivities are just down the road, with music act the BoDeans, samples from local restaurants (with tastes priced at $1), a kid zone and the chance to cheer on runners as they pass through (it's at Miles 21 and 22 of the race). The festivities are free. Oct. 26 beginning at 9 a.m. The BoDeans perform at 3 p.m. in Crystal City, Crystal Drive and 23rd Street. In Rosslyn, Wilson Boulevard at Lynn Street.

A Play With Politics
Arena Stage continues its celebration of acclaimed American playwright Arthur Miller with A View From The Bridge. Miller’s story of a dockworker struggling with incestuous feelings for his niece covers all the usual bases of jealousy, distrust, and betrayal, but it also tackles tougher topics, such as illegal immigration and citizenship.To catch on to even more of the play’s political undertones, be sure to read up on Miller’s feud with former collaborator Elia Kazan before you go; the play harshly criticizes Kazan’s cooperation with the McCarthy-era investigators who went on to blacklist much of Hollywood for their Communist sympathies.
