FOCUS GROUP: Four Walls, Five Women seeks to spark a visual discussion between artworks created by Black women and a verbal dialogue between those who view and purchase them. The topic of discussion is material. What are artists using?  What materials do they feel drawn to? How does Black femininity affect or reflect itself in the chosen material(s), if at all?  How does femininity affect the delivery and/or reception of the message? 

The voices of the women artists in this exhibition are heard primarily through material form.  Embracing both visual and verbal discussion, FOCUS GROUP: Four Walls, Five Women hopes to determine how effectively unique material languages are deciphered/valued/appreciated/acquired by a universal audience and market.    

FOCUS GROUP: Four Walls, Five Women is the second in a series of collaborations between DC Arts Center and Black Artists of DC. The purpose of Black Artists of DC (BADC) is to create a Black artists community to promote, develop and validate the culture, artistic expressions and aspirations of past and present artists of Black-Afrikan ancestry in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

The abstract paintings and sculpture of Anne Marchand and Craig Schaffer are well paired in this exhibition with their graceful swirls and rhythms. Yet, they differ in their genesis. Marchand paints  universal rhythms as joyous expressions of life, contrasting luminous depth and surface richness. Her work is inspired by mystical poetry and space exploration. Schaffer creates dynamic sculptural pieces inspired by science and nature. In this series, his work is based on fractal forms … shapes repeating at different scales created by the ongoing processes of life, such as the branching of plants to catch the sun.

The Stamp Gallery is pleased to introduce the inaugural installment of the artist lecture and performance series Speaking of Art…

The first artist talk will be by Annet Couwenberg who will discuss Clothing as Interface: CrossCultural Muslim Identity, a project she worked on during her time as an artist in residence at Willem de Kooning Academie in The Netherlands.  The collaborative project with Muslim Women in Rotterdam included both interviews and “Sewing Sessions,” that opened up extensive dialogues on the diverse views of fashion, politics, faith, beauty, modesty and cultural diversity held by Dutch Muslims.  In her collaborative sewing sessions, Couwenberg discovered an effective setting for discussions about cultural displacement.

Annet Couwenberg creates work with textile and fabric to explore “the concept of clothing as metaphor that examines the precarious balance between the constraints of social norm and our private desires.”  Born in the Netherlands, and holding two MFA degrees from US institutions, Couwenberg is currently a Professor in the Fiber department of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore.

The Lecture will be held in the Grand Ballroom Lounge, on the 1st floor of The Stamp Student Union, on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park.

New York Times Best-Selling Author Wes Moore to Speak in Washington, D.C. at Lisner Auditorium, November 15 at 6:30 PM, Free to the Public.

Wes Moore, author of New York Times best-seller The Other Wes Moore: One Name Two Fates, will speak about the power of education and public service on November 15 at Lisner Auditorium as part of Boston-based Facing History and Ourselves’ national Community Conversations series, made possible by The Allstate Foundation. Following his presentation, Moore will autograph books for the audience.

Facing History and Ourselves: Choosing to Participate, an acclaimed multi-media exhibition will open at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. on January 17 and remain on display through June 17.

Seeking to help young people redirect their lives, Moore tells the story of two kids with the same name, living in the same city who started in similar neighborhoods, but grew up to lead very different lives. One became a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow and business leader, and the other is serving a life sentence in prison for felony murder.

"RV" is a new body of photographs by Washington DC, based photographer Frank Hallam Day.  In his fourth exhibition at Addison/Ripley Fine Art, Day continues to be convincing as a master of concept, technology and provocative aesthetics. The viewer is at once drawn into the dramatic realm of the RV, curious about its inhabitants while, at the same time, kept at a distance by the "gated community" that is the essence of both each particular RV and their surrounding and often intimidating landscape. Day describes them as, "...overtly theatrical, the foliage surrounding the RV's often looks like a scenery prop...intended to look staged, almost dreamlike, half-way between fantasy and reality, exercises in artifice". As such, they share a current interest of contemporary photography and places Day in the ranks of its most accomplished practitioners.

Day's recent curatorial success with PORTRAY, an exhibition of work by Washington area artists and his inclusion as finalist in Voies Off 2010 in Arles, France mark him as a powerful force in both his home town and internationally.

"Beyond the Singularity" tells the final story of the fabled Gastonian civilization. Millenia ago a great race of technologically advanced beings visited an infant planet. They chose this planet as the site for the greatest genetic experiment ever conducted in the history of the multiverse. Experiment #57. Out of their experiment rose many forms of unique and wonderous sentient life. The existence of these "old gods" was only known through the myths and legends that arose from the collective consciousness of the sentient lifeforms they created, and eventually passed into obscurity. Then a genetic anomaly arose from the experiment. This anomaly would be known as Dingle Doppleganger and would threaten the very fabric of reality on Gastonia. Dingle threw the multiverse into a dark and terrible age. He destroyed everything, tore reality asunder and recreated Gastonia in his own image. This image included the spread of his reality to the rest of the multiverse and Dingle worked toward molding the few Gastonians left into a space faring race. Now the "old gods" have returned to their grand experiment to find something terrible...

Conceptually Yves Klein’s “Ritual for the Relinquishment of the Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility Zones” is a hard act to follow. It is a wonderful play on the antonymous meanings of the expression “to have and to have not” as can be related to conventional notions of art. At its core, the art concept describes a transaction that requires the exchange of gold by the buyer, in return for a receipt from the artist, as proof of purchase of an “immaterial zone” or rather a portion of the void.

For the latest issue of Worn Magazine, Josh photographed Katie Musser, a chocolatier at Co Co. Sala in Chinatown as she handmade a Cruella de Vil-themed dress out of chocolate for the 2010 Sweet Charity pagent. Weeks of shooting and hundreds of photographs later, Musser won the runway competition at the Mandarin Oriental, and Worn Magazine had a story. Take a look behind the scenes of the photo editing process at Worn Magazine's first ever photography exhibition featuring 39 chromira prints, many with hand-written captions, that give a glimpse into the world of chocolate, photography, and fashion.  The show opens on Sunday, Nov. 7th from 5-7:30pm.  Copies of Worn Magazine will be available for purchase.

Drawing inspiration from the number of quirky characters and funky forms produced in plastic toys, Megan Marlatt renders in a classic style paintings that depict the many meanings behind toys. Most of the toys she paints are products of children's packaged fast food meals that have been discarded and salvaged from thrift stores. In a complicated mixture of emotions both critical of and complicit to our consumer society, half of Marlatt's paintings reflect our mass plastic consumption run amuck, while the other half reminiscent for a time when a toy was a precious object.

New York, NY - An afternoon gallery talk by artist Elisabeth Subin will be offered at The Jewish Museum on Monday, November 8 at 1 pm. Ms. Subrin will talk about the current exhibition, Shulie: Film and Stills by Elisabeth Subrin. The gallery talk is FREE with admission to The Jewish Museum.

Shulie (1997, 37 min.) is a shot-by-shot remake of a little-known documentary about 1960s feminist Shulamith Firestone. Author of the treatise The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution, Firestone was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1967 when four male directors selected her as a subject for a film about the so-called Now Generation. Shot in the style of direct cinema, the original Shulie featured Firestone discussing religion, the limitations of motherhood, and racial and class issues in the workplace. Thirty years later, Elisabeth Subrin recreated Shulie using actors in many of the original locations. The resulting film is a nostalgic and somewhat cynical reflection on the legacy of second-wave feminism. Subrin writes, "in the compulsion to remake, to produce a fake document, to repeat a specific experience I never actually had, what I have offered up is the performance of a resonant, repetitive, emotional trauma that has yet to be healed."

This gallery talk is part of The Jewish Museum’s Artist Talk series presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Shifting the Gaze: Painting and Feminism.

WASHINGTON, DC – Flashpoint Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by Michael Dax Iacovone and Billy Friebele who will present a participatory photo and video project inviting visitors to become collaborators. Presented as part of FotoWeekDC, FREE SPACE will be exhibited off-site at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 901 G Street NW, directly across from Flashpoint. The work presented in FREE SPACE will be generated by an open request from the artists to the community to gather photographs from each quadrant of the District.

In an attempt to demystify the role of the artist, Iacovone and Friebele will invite viewers to become collaborators and co-authors of the work. The initial photographs assembled in the installation will be taken by 10 Miles Square photographers. During the course of the exhibition, viewers will be invited to submit photographs of public space in Washington, DC that will be added to the initial installation. The resulting work will consist of a grid of photographs – each picture will correspond to a square mile of Washington, DC. The exhibition is accompanied by a 100-page, fully illustrated color catalogue. With an introduction by American University Museum Director and Curator Jack Rasmussen, the catalogue features essays by exhibition curator J.W. Mahoney, former WPA Executive Director Jock Reynolds, and former Bookworks Manager Robin Moore; an illustrated timeline of selected moments in WPA's history; and an illustrated exhibition checklist. The catalogue is available for the price of $35 through the WPA website and will be available at the American University Museum bookstore after the opening of the exhibition .

Includes a 36-ft. long Table with Objects & Twelve Reconstructed Chairs Wrapped in Colored Tape

Industry Gallery will host din-din, an exhibition of new work by Jerry Mischak, opening November 6, 2010, 6-8 PM, and running through December 18, 2010.  Mischak, a senior critic at the Rhode Island School of Design, visiting professor at Brown University and instructor at the University of Rhode Island, will exhibit one large-scale installation and twelve chairs, all unique prototypes.  The installation piece dinner table/such a night is a 36-foot long table with 40 plates, 80 pieces of flat ware, 45 glasses, 25 empty wine bottles, and 100 empty water bottles, all wrapped in more than 3000 yards of orange vinyl tape.   The exhibition's 12 chairs are found objects reconstructed via sanding, cutting with the addition of plastic, Styrofoam and wood, and all encased in colored vinyl tape.

Flashpoint's Gallery and Mead Theatre Lab
Cultural Development Corporation (CuDC) is requesting proposals for Flashpoint's Gallery and Mead Theatre Lab September 2011 - August 2012 season.

All proposals must be received no later than 5 pm on Wednesday, December 1, 2010.

For the second year in a row, CuDC is partnering with The Community Foundation of the National Capital Region to make grants to artists participating in Flashpoint's Gallery and Mead Theatre Lab programs. The Creative Communities Fund (CCF) will provide grants of up to $3,000 to artists to support the creation and presentation of new work. DC-area artists applying to both programs are encouraged to submit grant applications in conjunction with their program applications.

Flashpoint's Mead Theatre Lab is a venue for playwrights and performing artists to present work that explores provocative ideas from a variety of perspectives and techniques.  Cultural Development Corporation is seeking artists who wish to present original plays, classic material with an innovative vision or work that combines multiple performance disciplines.

The juxtaposition of flourishing life with lurking death in Julie Wolfe’s artwork addresses the artist’s preoccupation with corruptive elements that challenge the strength of nature. Hamiltonian Gallery presents a new exhibition in two parts: Elena Volkova, Proofs; and Renee Van Der Stelt, Recordings. Both artists employ site-specificity in their practices by utilizing a given environment to shape the outcome of their work. By analyzing the nature of perception, Volkova has shown light on the viewer while Van Der Stelt has given us beautiful images of nature that illicit a poetic sense of time and space.

With her new series titled "Proofs," Elena Volkova has illustrated the act of perceiving through site-specific photographic installations.  In these installations, Volkova has placed us somewhere in-between the physical space of the art gallery and our own perceived vision of space by drawing attention to "liminal space", or space in a state of becoming. Through these skewed visions of the banal, Volkova gives us the opportunity to refresh our vision of that which we don't see, that which is right in front of our eyes.

Renee Van Der Stelt has developed what she calls "Recordings" or site drawings by capturing the physical fugitive traces in the landscape such as rotting bark, rain and wind.  Van Der Stelt has created an index of her natural landscape by using various elements within that environment as implements for drawing. Evidence of pollen, grass, trees, and algae can be found on her paper, leaving behind analog representations of ephemeral instances.

IA&A is accepting entries for their upcoming November 15th Members' Critique. We will select a maximum of ten member artists to showcase 1-2 pieces of artwork each. Although it is free to enter, this opportunity is on a first come first serve basis so please submit your entry as soon as possible. This is an open event, so even if you are not participating, please feel free to come along and join in the discussion.

This month respected DC artist Carol Goldberg and International Arts and Artists President David Furchgott will both be critics. Artists are encouraged to share their thoughts on their personal style, influences, media, and past shows. This is a great opportunity to identify with other artists and establish lasting friendships. Your connections with each other and understanding of one another's work will only serve to strengthen DC's art community.

Guidelines:
Artists will be able to display a piece of their work for constructive criticism and group discussion. Theses critiques are fundamentally designed to provide helpful feedback to artists. Criticisms must therefore reach beyond binary value judgments ("I like the piece" or "I don't like the piece") and into the realm of more astute intellectual observation and advice.

In Ault’s words:  “As children we are told what not to do.  Don’t touch that, it’s hot.  Don’t eat that, it’s dirty.  Don’t swallow your gum, don’t play with matches.  Don’t run with scissors.

Yet we did everything we were told not to do because we wanted to know why the adults didn’t want us to do these things.  So we found out what ‘hot’ is, what dirt tastes like, what happened when we swallowed our chewing gum, and the consequences of playing with matches.  But somehow we knew the consequences of running with scissors and usually didn’t try that one out..."

Some of Ault's images begin as film photographs taken with toy cameras that produce blurry, dreamlike images. Other images are created from objects placed on a flatbed scanner and digitally manipulated to produce distorted, unrecognizable images.

Beginning at sundown this November 4th and 5th, the video installation TIME INTERVAL (INTERVALO DEL TIEMPO) by Alberto Roblest will premiere in the heart of Adams Morgan. This video is a temporary public art project, a visual poem for passers-by, neighbors and the public at large. On the corner of Columbia Road and 18th Street, it will be a festival of moving images, an alley transformed into a gallery, illuminated walls of red brick, a museum without a museum.

This installation is made possible through support from the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities, The Mexican Cultural Institute, Sun Trust, The Latino Chamber of Commerce, the DC Arts Center, and Adams Morgan Neighborhood Association. Also, with help from The Adams Morgan Partnership BID, Adams Morgan Main Street Group, Jackie Reyes from the Office of Jim Graham and the generous technical support of Best Buy, TIME INTERVAL will interrupt the street with a kaleidoscope of images, color and sound for two nights only.

The entrance is free and open to the public.

Folks Like Us, a solo show of contemporary abstract artwork expressed in loose gestural figures. Her bold bright colors create a world of emotion using mixed media figure drawings on canvas and paper. Extrapolated everyday figure poses create a pattern of color and shapes deliver visions of inner beauty existing in us all. Paula’s common thread in all her works: "I seek and respond to the spiritual nature in all of us--the landscape of our souls, expressed in bold colors and simple forms."

With the faces in his new solo exhibition, Charles St. Charles works through Picasso’s question, “are we to paint what's on the face, what's inside the face, or what's behind it.” His unique blend of color, abstraction, and expression acknowledge by turns man’s outer, inner, and ancestral layers.  We probably know these people.  Charles says, “if these new pieces work, it’s because it’s sometimes hard to stop looking at ourselves.”

Call to artist for the Deanwood Recreation Center public art project

Deanwood Recreation Center Public Art Opportunity

Budget:           $200,000

Deadline:         Friday, December 3, 2010 at 5:30pm.

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) seeks an artist or artist team with significant 3-dimensional experience to design, fabricate and install permanent public artwork for the new Deanwood Recreation Center, in Washington, DC. Deanwood is located in the District's Northeast quadrant and is one of the District’s oldest and proudest neighborhoods.

The selected artist(s) will be required to collaborate with local artist, Amber Robles-Gordon. Ms. Gordon was selected through a peer panel selection process to serve as the apprentice to the selected artist for this project. Ms. Gordon will be a valuable asset to the selected artist and serve as a liaison to the community. Ms. Gordon is a mixed media artist and the goal for her participation in this project is to collaborate on the design and fabrication of the artwork and to build her capacity as a public artist.
