Studio 1469 is thrilled to present visual artist and techno dj Mike Parker in his first solo exhibition in the District. Mike Parker: Drawings will feature approximately 17 recent figurative artworks.
What the artist calls "noise," sounds that others might tune out or tone down, has always been fascinating to him. Over some 30 years he has forged various paths in which to amplify: first by djing; then building instruments from found materials, later pressing records of the subsequent recordings; and learning the techniques of modular synthesis. He then returned to the art of he dj by way of "techno", a form of music that to Parker was an amalgamation of every form of noise that influenced him previously.
At the same time, drawing has always been essential to Mike Parker's practice. It was constant almost unabated throughout his formal education and continues today. The figure is the subject, often fragmented and reduced to gestural interpretations. An optical type of noise developed as the drawings became untamed, subjective. Parker in his own words, says it best. "I've been fortunate enough to be able to indulge in this kind of [artistic] activity. I'm not yet completely satisfied, but optimistically believe
that my best drawings and recordings haven't been made yet. And no, I will not turn the volume down."
ABOUT THE SPACE
Studio 1469 (www.studio1469.com) is a newly constructed studio, designed and created with multi-disciplinary uses in mind. The space is both a blank slate and a ready to use opportunity for rehearsal, instruction, and creation. Gallery style lighting along with abundant natural light, combined with reinforced soundproof walls enables both choir or painter, ensemble or shutterbug to make things happen within this secluded yet wonderfully situated building.

"Bits of Elsewhere" is Isabel Manalo's second exhibition at Addison/Ripley Fine Art. Her characteristic white space is still prominent in these new paintings and drawings, but the artist's exploration of textures has literally exploded onto her surfaces, barely contained by the limits of edges. The artist balances chaos and order in the new work, fracturing, dripping, collaging and entwining material onto Yupo and Mylar. Continuing to work from photographs and distilling primary source materials in Photoshop, Ms. Manalo offers a vision that, on the one hand reduces her imagery to monochromatic shadow-like forms in alizarin and burnt umber tones while, on the other, presents a bright, fractal complexity. There are moments of quiet here set beside a passionate intensity and presented with the artist's sure, careful hand.
Ms. Manalo's involvement with and recognition by the Washington art com-munity marks her as an important voice both through her art and her web-based presence with The Studio Visit. Her curatorial vision and generous acceptance of other artists was evident in her exhibition last year at this gallery, CultureScape. In addition, a recent retrospective of the artist's work was presented at the German Marshall Fund in 2011.

Heiner Contemporary exhibits Avery Lawrence
Heiner Contemporary presents Moving a Tree and Arranging Suitcases, projects by New Orleans-based artist Avery Lawrence. On view from March 9 through April 21, the gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition revolves around two films, which are supplemented by drawings, installation, photography and artist-designed wallpaper. HANDPAINTED 20' x 35' WALLSCAPE PROMOTES NEW KEHINDE WILEY EXHIBITION AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM
WALLSCAPE RECREATES IMAGE OF ONE OF ARTIST'S LARGE-SCALE PAINTINGS AT HOUSTON AND MOTT STREETS
The Jewish Museum, in conjunction with the opening of its exhibition, Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel, is trying something new. Its advertising agency, Our Man In Havana (OMIH), has conceived and is overseeing a hand-painted reproduction of a Kehinde Wiley painting as a giant wallscape on the northeast corner of Houston Street and Mott Street in Manhattan. A video documenting the installation will also be created and released online to generate additional awareness for the exhibition.
The 20' x 35' wallscape is being painted over the course of this week by three artists from Overall Murals - a Brooklyn-based company whose other clients include the Whitney Museum of American Art and the New Museum. The wallscape will remain on view through May 23, 2012.
Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel will be on view at The Jewish Museum from March 9 through July 29, 2012. The exhibition features 14 large-scale paintings from the contemporary American painter Kehinde Wiley's newest series, The World Stage: Israel. The vibrant portraits of Israeli youths from diverse ethnic and religious affiliations are each embedded in a unique background influenced by Jewish ceremonial art. Also included are 11 works - papercuts and large textiles - chosen by the artist from The Jewish Museum's collection. Wiley chose to display these works of ceremonial art alongside his paintings to create a dynamic interchange between the contemporary and the traditional. All the 14 paintings on view are being displayed in New York for the first time.
One of the most significant young artists working today, Kehinde Wiley currently lives and works in Beijing, Dakar and New York.

What do President Barack Obama, Adolf Hilter, Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Pee-wee Herman have in common? According to Atlanta-based artist Charly Palmer, each has a “Tar Baby.” In this collection of over 40 mixed media works, Palmer appropriates and reinterprets the tale of “Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby” to address contemporary issues of bigotry, racism, and stereotyping. Yet, in Palmer’s version it is no longer the archetypal trickster rabbit, but rather civil rights leaders, entertainers, politicians, scholars, and African and Native Americans who confront their tar babies.
Join Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery for a conversation with Charly Palmer on Thursday, March 8th at 6:30pm in the gallery. Palmer will be joined by curator, Myrtis Bedolla, and catalog essayist, Horace D. Ballard, Jr. to discuss the series' charged historical context and commentary on contemporary issues of bigotry, racism, and stereotyping. The Bethesda Urban Partnership and Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District announce “Tunnel Vision,” a public art exhibition to be hung in the Metro Tunnel that runs under Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda.
“Tunnel Vision” will showcase the work of 12 selected artists inside the Metro Tunnel. Interested artists are invited to submit up to 5 images of their work for review. Each artist will be paid $500 for the license to use their image. If selected, artists will need to provide a high resolution file for the image of their artwork to be printed on a poly metal material, size 4' high x 8' wide. Artists are encouraged to submit artwork that can easily be sized to 4’ x 8’. Artists must be residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. to be eligible for consideration. There is a category for young artists, age 14-17, to apply.

A THOUSAND AND ONE FACES OF MEXICO: Masks from the Collection of Ruth D. Lechuga

Masks have been an integral part of the rituals and ceremonies of societies all over the world and this exhibition, curated by folk expert Marta Turok, features over 140 masks accompanied by a selection of photographs, figurines, costumes and musical instruments that reflect the regional traditions, religious rituals and celebrations of the indigenous populations in Mexico from the Ruth D. Lechuga Collection. Together, they provide a salient example of the diversity and richness of Mexican culture.
A prodigious collector of folk art, Dr. Lechuga (1920-2004) travelled around the country for fifty years collecting over 10,000 pieces, including 1,200 masks, which constitute one of the most important Folk Art collections in Mexico. Upon her death, Lechuga donated her collection to the Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico City. A selection of her masks is on exhibit at the Mexican Cultural Institute.

Fran Abrams' work typically involves color and geometry. Color because the colors of polymer clay can be vibrant in themselves, but also blend like paints. Just as in painting, the proportion of each color in the blend affects the outcome of the resulting color.
For this show, Fran explored only black and white clay and the grays that result from blending the two. Her inspiration came from Washington politics where it seems lately that everything is black or white and there is no in between.

“Tracks” Pete McCutchen
Pete McCutchen’s show, Tracks, marries elegant and vibrant colors, and then gives it a Pop-Art inspired twist. “I decontextualize,” says McCutchen, describing his approach to photography. In this case, he has isolated the lines of roller coaster track against a clear sky, playing with line, form, composition, and -- in particular -- color.

Artisphere celebrates Frida Kahlo with related ticketed programming featuring Mexican, Mexican-American and Latina artists!
Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)’s extraordinary life and iconic biographical paintings have earned her international renown in the world of modern art. Upon Kahlo’s death in 1954, more than 6,500 personal photographs and items belonging to her and husband/artist Diego Rivera were sealed and put in storage. For more than half a century this great collection of personal memorabilia remained hidden from the public. In 2007 this collection was opened and Mexican photographer and curator Pablo Ortiz Monasterio inventoried and catalogued 240 images to create the Frida Kahlo: Her Photos exhibition. These images reveal a little-known side of the artist and lifelong resident of Coyoacán, a Mexico City suburb and Arlington, Virginia's sister city. Artisphere is the first and only U.S. venue to present this exhibition.

Artspace DC in conjunction with Pleasant Plains Workshop and a growing list of community partners presents In Our Hood. An exhibition exploring themes of gentrification of Northwest Washington DC most particularly in relation to three historic neighborhoods within the Northwest quadrant of the city; Ledroit park, Shaw, and the U Street Corridor.
Calling artists of all disciplines to submit work for consideration for this exciting project. All media including all manifestations of visual, performance (music, dance, theater), and new media (video, photography) art will be considered. There is no application fee for this exhibition.

In Loving Memory is dedicated in loving tribute to Judith Keyserling. Throughout her career Judy served as executive vice president of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, vice president of marketing and public relations at the Milwaukee Symphony and in the same capacity at The Washington Ballet. Judy began her career in the popular music business as a talent buyer, agent and manager, and produced the "Best Rock and Roll Record of 1982", awarded by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors & Producers. For the last 6 years Judy has done all the PR and writing for both Zenith Gallery and the Zenith Community Arts Foundation.
Ten percent of the sales will go to the Zenith Community Arts Foundation, a fund in honor of Judy Keyserling, to continue the programs she worked on for the last 6 years.
For over three decades, Zenith Gallery has contributed to Washington’s art scene, offering collectors and art aficionados a dynamic array of painting, sculpture, three-dimensional mixed media, neon art, art furniture, tapestry, photography and fine crafts. NEW YORK CITY, (FEB. 24, 2012)— Artexpo New York will showcase the exciting art work of Leila Holtsman, Joan Konkel, Anne Marchand, Jodi, and Georgia Nassikas from March 22-25, 2012 at Pier 92 on the Hudson.
For the last decade, Leila Holtsman has created mixed-material sculpture, site murals, and ceramic objects for private clients and juried exhibits in the Mid-Atlantic region, including in Washington, Philadelphia and New York. Leila spent ten years of her early life in the deserts of Jordan and Saudi Arabia, which inspire her interest in natural forms and earthen palettes to this day. www.leilaholtsman.com/
Washington, DC-based sculptor Joan Konkel unleashes color to interact in the third dimension. She recently completed a 15-foot long triptych for the biopharmaceutical, MedImmune, in Gaithersburg, Maryland and currently has work in the Arts in Embassies program in Paris. Holding a BA in Fine Arts and an MA from San Francisco College for Women, and an MFA in Sculpture from George Washington University in Washington, DC, she also received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. Anne Marchand received an M.F.A. from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. Marchand’s award winning paintings convey universal rhythms in nature and the cosmos. She explores relationships in color, mark making, body movement and poetry to provoke deeper inquiry into the origins of humanity. She layers mixed media with acrylic paint in her canvases. Her work is represented in private, public art and corporate collections. Her work is available at Porter Contemporary, NYC. Jodi left her native country of Canada in 1967 for the Far East and Europe, a move that would influence her life and work forever. She moved to the United States in 1978 and while art has always been a part of her life she first began to emerge as a serious artist in 1995. Although Jodi has received private training, she has never studied painting or ceramics at an academic institution. This has allowed Jodi the independence and freedom to develop her unique style. Layering clay on the original textured surfaces has taken her work to a new level of expression. For Georgia Nassikas, life’s turning moments often arrive unexpectedly. As an artist and beekeeper, I experienced an artistic crossing while viewing a modern encaustic painting at the National Gallery a day after the honey harvest from my hives. That was my moment of crossing from oil painting to encaustic: my wax in my paintings. An ancient technique, encaustic involves wax, pigment, and resin from fir trees. This process allows for luminous, textured, complex surfaces that deepen and enliven my images: an interplay of elemental form and color, the geometry of angles and shadows, and the light of a lifting sky. www.GeorgiaNassikas.com

George Hemphill will discuss the history of the Washington Color School movement in the context of current and future art markets. Beginning with an explanation of the aesthetic breakthrough achieved and shared by the Color School painters, this talk will address their relationship to other color field painters of the 1960s and 1970s, their influence upon subsequent generations of Washington artists, and their enduring influence upon the contemporary art world.
The Washington Color School movement originated in the late 1950s and early 1960s and is defined by painters' use of color as both subject and form. Possibly a reaction to the density and chaos of Abstract Expressionism, the movement remains singular in its impact. Artists involved in the movement, both directly and indirectly, include Leon Berkowitz, Gene Davis, Thomas Downing, Sam Gilliam, Jacob Kainen, Willem de Looper, Morris Louis, Howard Mehring, Kenneth Noland, Paul Reed, Alma Thomas and Anne Truitt. The Jefferson Place Gallery played a major role in exhibiting the works of these artists. It was at Jefferson Place Gallery that Willem de Looper's stained canvas works, currently on view at HEMPHILL in Willem de Looper: Paintings 1968-72, were first exhibited.
George Hemphill will address current pricing, acquisition opportunities, and related art investment issues. This lecture is adapted from a presentation Hemphill made in July 2011 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Appraisers.
ART TALKS is an ongoing series of talks with artists, curators, collectors, and experts. Since 1998, the series has presented topics such as collecting for beginners and panel discussions on issues in contemporary art.
This event is concurrent with Willem de Looper: Paintings 1968-72, on view through March 10, 2012. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rivers and Memories features highly developed explorations into the expressive potential of color, space, and metaphor. The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities invites residents to submit nominations
Mayor Vincent C. Gray and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities announced a call for nominations for the 27th Annual Mayor's Arts Awards and Mayor's Awards for Arts Teaching. The awards are the most prestigious honors conferred by the city on individual artists, teachers, nonprofit organizations and patrons of the arts. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 16th.
The Mayor's Arts Award recognizes artists and organizations in five categories - Excellence in an Artistic Discipline, Outstanding Emerging Artist, Excellence in Service to the Arts, Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education, and Innovation in the Arts. The awards are limited to individuals and nonprofit (501c3) organizations that reside in the District of Columbia.
The Mayor's Awards for Arts Teaching are limited to full-time arts teachers who are employed by a D.C. elementary, middle or high school. The three categories for arts teaching are Excellence in Teaching Performing Arts, Excellence in Teaching Visual Arts and Excellence in Teaching Language Arts. Teachers in all artistic disciplines (visual arts, music, theatre, dance or humanities-based) are eligible for nomination.

Jay Barrows is the long-time curator for the Sydney and Frances Lewis Private Art Collection in Richmond, VA. The collection consists of more that 1300 pieces including paintings, sculpture, unique and limited edition contemporary furniture, ceramics by major 20th century artists such as Andy Warhol, Larry Rivers, Chuck Close, and Claes Oldenburg. He is also an art
consultant / broker whose focus is to assist local, regional and national artists in selling or placing their work in collections.
Jay will talk on the massive changes that have taken place in the art world regarding how artists market their work and how collectors purchase art.

What is the scope of the role that architects and art consultants play in the careers of emerging artists?

CAG presents Georgetown ARTS, sponsored by CAG and House of Sweden, along with several generous patrons, will showcase the talents of Georgetown's many artists - "emerging" to established, young to old, working in classes, studios, and plein air.
Following Thursday evening's opening reception, Georgetown ARTS 2012 will be open daily Friday, February 17, through Monday, February 20, from 11am to 5pm featuring works by Georgetown residents - and artists who have studios in Georgetown.
The Art Show committee, headed by Laura-Anne Tiscornia, have organized an amazing array of art including oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting, prints, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. Most works will be available for sale, with a few on loan from the artists and private collections. All art on display will be suitable for viewing by families with young children. Artists Edward "Bear" Miller, Camilla Bozzoli, and Robin Hill will offer demonstrations of portraiture, watercolor, and oil painting during the course of the show.

Joyce Y-J Lee: Passages / Matthew Mann: Buddy Pictures

Hamiltonian Gallery presents two concurrent solo exhibitions by Hamiltonian Fellows: Joyce Y-J Lee, Passages - photography and video installations; Matthew Mann, Buddy Pictures - painting.
Both artists, trained as painters, each lay forward new bodies of work that continue to explore the tropes of Renaissance painting applied to their own contemporary narrative. Although stylistically distinct, Lee and Mann both convey imaginary dimensions of space to metaphor the human condition.
Matthew Mann's assemblages of paintings, Buddy Pictures, is a refreshing analysis of painting as a method of storytelling. Mann's paintings depict scenes fraught with allegory of archetypal cowboys and vivid yet geographically impossible landscapes.
In Passages, the second installment of the Travelogue series, Joyce Y-J Lee presents a collection of photographic digital prints and video projections that convey the theatrical nature of light which she documented during her recent travels to The Great Wall of China and the 2011 Venice Biennale.

My work has been a continual process of visual investigation, working to manipulate and maneuver “camera vision”. An ever-present phenomenological element is of primary importance; recent landscapes interrogate the codes of linear perspective that are so integral to photographic interpretation. Ultimately, my images function by alternating private and public strata, simultaneously combining layers of cultural reflections and personal insights. The circuitous path of inquiry often leads not to resolution, but to further questions; it is what makes the journey both challenging and fulfilling. - Al Wildey

Solo exhibition of iona rozeal brown’s work from her studies in Japan, opens this Saturday, 2-4pm at the Asian Arts Gallery at Towson University.
Artist Lecture, February 9, 6:30 p.m. iona rozeal brown will conduct a lecture to introduce the process of her large scale paintings inspired by Japanese aesthetics. In cooperation with the Department of Arts + Design, Art History, Art Education.

WASHINGTON, DC – The inspiration for Jacqueline Levine’s work ranges from the imagery of Hieronymous Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights to the distorted scale and perspective in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Levine’s solo exhibition, The Temptation, will transform Flashpoint Gallery into an immersive installation.
Levine has developed a cast of characters that take the form of large-scale, figurative sculptures that derive their stylistic influences from primitivism to pop and surrealism to low-brow. Three main figures in the space will express individuality and happiness on one side and shadow and darkness on the other. The figures represent internal personalities while the faces mimic the fear we hide behind. Levine’s vibrant sense of color exaggerates each character’s expression and contrasts the black and white murals on the surrounding gallery walls.
Levine’s works are informed by her vivid dreams. Like the artist’s dreams, the works form a narrative, but remain ambiguous and sometimes frightening. The exhibition title, The Temptation, refers to the ease with which we are able to give in to personal fears. The artist enacts works of individual expression as a form of rebellion against these fears.
The artist will launch an app as part of the show to give viewers access to work beyond the physical gallery space. A small picture book featuring interactions between all the characters in the show will be given out to attendees at the opening reception.

Artwork must be ready to hang. This means there has to be a wire hanging system in back of the piece of artwork so it can hang on our wall. Artwork that does not have a hanging system will be excluded from the show.
Each artist may submit up to three images for consideration, although it is likely that only one work will be accepted from each artist due to space. Entries will be accepted via email only. The deadline for the digital submission is March 15. Submit to: gallery@camprehoboth.com. The selection committee will email notifications of acceptance by March 17th.
Selected pieces are due by March 20. If selected, all work must be framed, and ready for display.
Work needs to be dropped off and picked up from CAMP Rehoboth.
In the body of your email, you must include the following information: name, address, email address, phone, file names, title of work, medium, and framed size, and price. All work will be offered for sale. A commission of 25% per piece of sold artwork goes to CAMP Rehoboth for future community projects.
The gallery reserves the right to not display any works that are not finished in a professional manner with regard to framing, or do not accurately replicate the submitted work.

Shaw Art Walk: The Convention Center and Beyond

Six notable galleries are staying open late and the Walter E.
Washington Convention Center is opening its doors for a rare evening
tour of its extensive art collection on the evening of February 8, 2012.
Meet at the Mount Vernon Square entrance to the Convention Center at
6:15pm for an hour long guided tour of the highlights of the largest
public art collection in Washington, D.C. During the Convention Center
tour and afterwards, six area galleries within one block of the
Convention Center will be open late for a special night of art viewing.The galleries include Civilian Art Projects (1019 7th St., NW), Contemporary Wing (1250 9th St., NW), Lamont Bishop Gallery (1314 9th St., NW), Long View Gallery (1234 9th St., NW), Maruka Gallery and Boutique (1300 9th St., NW), and Touchstone Gallery (901 New York Ave., NW). Galleries will remain open until 9 p.m. for the Shaw Art Walk. Maps and descriptions of the galleries’ shows will be available at each gallery and at the conclusion of the Convention Center tour.
The Convention Center tour will start from the Mount Vernon Square entrance to the Convention Center and will last approximately one hour. The tour will start promptly at 6:30 p.m., and participants are encouraged to arrive at the Convention Center at 6:15 p.m.
Following the event at 9 p.m., participants are encouraged to enjoy the art of the cocktail at The Passenger which is located at 1021 7th St., NW.

Elizabeth Holtry:Toile de Jouy Holtry's paintings depict animals that few people appreciate, such as hyenas, insects, and rats. Often wondering why is it that people advocate equality between humans, yet so freely discriminate in our opinions of animals her work addresses our prejudicial attitudes toward these animals. Holtry's inspiration also comes from an ongoing interest in the decorative arts and textiles.
David Myers: Confined:Visual SynonymsPhotography is a tool for Myers, that he uses to explore surroundings and better understand observations made along the way. Confined: Visual Synonyms, is an example of a portfolio of images materializing after working on a theme, unknowingly, for almost a year. The images are more than mere documentation; they have a clear sense of showing a perspective of what Myers saw in the camera's viewfinder. The work is therefore documenting underlying and not yet, well-understood preconceptions of zoos and aquariums, and our interaction with the animals housed within their confines.
Brian Kirk: Natural Reaction Kirk is intrigued with the forces of nature. He considers himself a naturalist and a curious spectator of natural phenomena. The natural actions of wind, water, fire on the ever-changing earth hold a fascination for the artist. The cyclical forces play a role in his work; the ebb and flow of the tides, the changing stages of the moon, the emblazoned autumn leaves.

The exhibit at Brookside Gardens will include monotypes with images of ornamental grasses. They are part of two series, “Bouquet of Grasses” and “Silver Grass” series. "Ott’s
prints suggest traditional Asian art, and some of them are printed on Japanese
kochi or Thai unryu paper, adding vegetable textures to the images of
vegetation. The pieces are beautifully made and unapologetically decorative.
This work may perform merely the gentlest of twists on its natural
inspirations, but it does so with skill and grace.”

The printed word and the acquisition of language are the principal ideas in the work of John James Anderson. His first series, “Building Blocks,” adopts the playful vocabulary of pop art with familiar logos and graphics which require reading through a lens that is both nostalgic and cerebral. Mr. Anderson creates a graphic alphabet from the eye-catching lettering of soda cans, candy wrappers and cereal boxes. In his second series, “Out of Print,” language and the evolution of our collective literacy is also explored, this time in the decline of print journalism. Mr. Anderson collected the front pages of national newspapers and carefully erased portions of their content, resulting in graphic and poetic musings on the fate of mass communication.

Her influences are as varied as novels, mythological figures, plant and bacterial life, rock stars and vending machines. She refers to her drawings as emotional maps, parasites, friends, and penance.
